Which Xiaomi walkie-talkie is this?
“MiJia Walkie Talkie” is not one single specification. Xiaomi has sold the original MiJia Walkie Talkie, MiJia Walkie Talkie 1S and 2, Walkie Talkie 3, Chat, Lite, Sports and 4G variants. Xiaomi’s newer Offline Communication feature for selected Xiaomi 15T-series phones is a separate smartphone function, not evidence that every MiJia radio can make ordinary phone calls.
Before buying, read the label or box and record the model number, frequency range, battery rating, charging connector, app name, regulatory markings and whether the device has GPS, Bluetooth, a SIM slot or a cellular modem. Do not apply later-model specifications to the original radio.
What the original MiJia model actually offers
The original radio uses push-to-talk, shared channels and sub-audible tone codes. It is half-duplex: one person normally speaks while the others listen. Xiaomi lists quick group formation, channel scanning, dual-band functions, hands-free voice activation (VOX), digital noise filtering, FM radio and position sharing through its dedicated app. The official product page is at mi.com/mj-interphone.

Those are manufacturer estimates, not independent runtime or range measurements. Transmit time, volume, temperature, signal conditions and standby behavior all change battery life.
Do not confuse it with the 2S
A separate Walkie Talkie 2S manual identifies model XMDJJ04FY with a 2,190 mAh battery, USB-C, Bluetooth 5.0, 430–440 MHz operation, 4 W transmission, IP54 protection and a 1.77-inch display. Those figures do not describe the original MiJia Walkie Talkie. See the 2S manual for that different device.
What “talk unlimited for free” means
What is free
Two compatible radios can communicate directly without a SIM, mobile-data plan, Wi-Fi connection or per-minute charge. Once the radios, batteries and accessories are purchased, there is no recurring airtime fee for that direct link.

What is not free or unlimited
- Range: Radio propagation, terrain and interference determine where communication works.
- Battery: Conversation stops when the battery is empty.
- Privacy: Tone codes filter unwanted audio; they do not encrypt transmissions.
- Phone features: Configuration, firmware updates, maps or group-management functions may require a phone, account, Bluetooth and an app.
- 4G variants: A cellular Xiaomi radio may require a SIM, data plan, network coverage or cloud service.
This is subscription-free local radio, not unlimited nationwide calling.
Range: why a “kilometer” claim is not a guarantee
Usable range depends on line of sight, elevation, buildings, reinforced concrete, trees, hills, antenna orientation, interference, transmit power and battery condition. A clear elevated path can outperform a dense neighborhood or a building full of concrete and metal. A repeater can extend coverage only where the radio and repeater system are legally compatible.
Xiaomi’s original product page uses broad environment-based marketing language rather than one universally applicable real-world figure. A meaningful review should report the point where speech becomes unreliable in each setting, not the last moment a broken signal is audible. Treat marketplace claims such as “5 km,” “10 km” or “unlimited” as condition-dependent, not guaranteed performance.

App, Bluetooth and position sharing
The dedicated app can show teammates’ relative positions while the radios remain within effective radio range, even when the phone has no cellular signal. That is local radio-assisted positioning, not internet tracking or a substitute for GPS emergency service.
- The radio link remains essential; losing radio range ends the exchange.
- A phone may still be required to configure the unit or view positions on a map.
- Account servers, language support, Bluetooth permissions, firmware and region settings can affect setup.
- Maps or position history may need cached data or internet access.
Reports that the 1S requires a China-region Mi Home setup or a separate PTT+ application are model- and software-version-specific, not universal Xiaomi behavior. See the model-specific discussion at XiaomiToday.
Do not confuse this product with Xiaomi’s newer Offline Communication feature. Xiaomi says that feature requires selected Xiaomi 15T-series phones, a valid SIM, Xiaomi account, Bluetooth and a supported software update, and that availability and distance are regional. Details are at Xiaomi support.

Battery, charging and aging hardware
The original unit’s approximately 3-hour charge time, 17-hour normal-use estimate and eight-day standby estimate come from Xiaomi. Micro-USB is now dated, and replacement batteries and English-language support may be difficult to obtain for imported or old stock. On a used unit, inspect the lithium battery for swelling, heat or rapid discharge rather than relying on the original specification.
Can it communicate with Motorola, Midland or other radios?
“Walkie-talkie” is a category, not a compatibility standard. Both radios must share the same frequency band, channel frequency, modulation, channel spacing and CTCSS/DCS tone settings, while remaining within legal operating limits.
The original Xiaomi listing’s 409.7500–409.9875 MHz public band is not the same as the U.S. consumer FRS/GMRS channels around 462/467 MHz. Therefore, a China-market Xiaomi should not be assumed to work with ordinary U.S. Motorola or Midland FRS radios. Midland describes its U.S. FRS products as compatible with Midland FRS and GMRS radios on the applicable shared channels; that does not make them compatible with an unrelated 409 MHz radio. U.S. legality: the critical buying issue
The FCC’s FRS/GMRS framework uses the 462/467 MHz bands with different power and licensing rules. FRS devices operate under license-free provisions at permitted power levels; GMRS operation requires an individual license. The FCC also distinguishes service classification and equipment certification. See FCC-17-57A1.
Xiaomi’s original page instead identifies China-specific frequencies and says the product is for mainland China. A radio imported from China is not automatically FCC-certified because it is sold online or can transmit. Before transmitting in the United States, verify:
- an FCC ID or other certification status;
- the exact transmit frequencies and power;
- whether the radio is approved for Part 95 operation;
- whether it can transmit outside U.S. consumer-radio bands; and
- that the seller is supplying the intended regional version.
For an unidentified imported unit, the responsible verdict is “not a safe U.S. recommendation without model-specific verification,” rather than an absolute legal ruling about every Xiaomi variant.
Privacy and safety limitations
Sub-audible tones and app groups are convenience features, not security. Another user with suitable equipment may hear a transmission on the same channel. Location sharing also creates a separate privacy consideration. The radio has no guaranteed coverage, automatic emergency dispatch or certified rescue function, so it should not be your sole life-safety communication method.
Practical review and setup checklist
- Photograph the label and record the model, frequency range, battery and regulatory markings.
- Charge both units fully, then set the same channel and tone; test one-to-one and group calls.
- Test open field, residential, indoor and wooded or hilly locations. Record when speech becomes unreliable.
- Measure mixed-use battery life with a defined transmit/receive schedule, volume and temperature.
- Check speaker clarity, VOX sensitivity, wind noise, screen readability, button feedback, antenna and belt clip.
- Document account, region, Bluetooth, language and firmware requirements for the app.
- Test another radio only after confirming that the frequencies and transmission are legally appropriate.
Common failure modes
- Units power on but cannot talk: Channel plan or tone settings differ.
- App cannot find the radio: Region, account server, Bluetooth permission or unsupported firmware may be responsible.
- Position sharing fails: The radio link may be out of range, or map display may need cached data or internet.
- VOX transmits accidentally: Wind, engines and nearby voices can trigger it.
- Range is short: Buildings, hills, vegetation and antenna orientation are normal causes.
- Imported radios work together but not with U.S. radios: Frequency-band mismatch is likely.
- Seller says “license-free”: That claim may apply to the sales country, not yours.
- Battery runtime has collapsed: Age, storage, temperature or cell degradation is likely.

- Groups purchasing matching, genuine units with a credible return policy.
Who should skip it?
- U.S. buyers wanting ready-to-use FRS interoperability.
- Anyone needing emergency or life-safety communications.
- Anyone expecting phone-like private calls, nationwide coverage or guaranteed English support.
- Buyers receiving only a vague marketplace model name or unsupported range promise.
Final verdict
The original Xiaomi MiJia Walkie Talkie is an interesting subscription-free radio with useful group, VOX, FM and app features. “Unlimited for free” is accurate only in the narrow sense of unlimited direct conversation while the radios are powered, legally configured and within radio range. Because the original version is China-market hardware on frequencies that do not map neatly onto U.S. FRS/GMRS, it is a conditional recommendation rather than a blind buy. In the United States, a certified FRS set—or a licensed GMRS set when more capability is worth the paperwork—is usually the safer purchase.
