The right fix depends on where Face ID fails and which passcode Telegram is asking for. If Face ID works elsewhere on your iPhone but not in Telegram, check Telegram’s biometric-unlock setting and iOS permission first. If Face ID fails across the device, troubleshoot iOS or the TrueDepth camera instead. Telegram’s app lock is also separate from using a passkey to sign in to your Telegram account.
First, identify what is happening
| What you see | Likely issue | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Telegram never displays a Face ID prompt | Telegram’s biometric option is off, or iOS permission is missing | Check Passcode Lock in Telegram, then iOS Face ID permissions |
| Face ID appears but Telegram asks for a code | Face ID may be temporarily locked, or Telegram is requesting its own app passcode | Identify which code it wants before proceeding |
| Face ID fails in Telegram and elsewhere | iOS settings, sensor obstruction, or a device problem | Follow Apple’s Face ID checks |
| Face ID works in other apps but not Telegram | Telegram setting, permission, or app-specific software issue | Re-enable Telegram’s biometric option and restart the app |
| Telegram unlocks, then locks again unexpectedly | Auto-Lock timing or a version-specific app issue | Check Auto-Lock and update the app |
| Face ID appears while signing in to Telegram | This may be a passkey sign-in issue, not the app lock | Troubleshoot the passkey separately |
Enable biometric unlocking in Telegram
-
Unlock your iPhone or iPad with its device passcode.
-
Open Telegram → Settings → Privacy and Security → Passcode Lock.
-
Turn on Unlock with Face ID, or the equivalent biometric option shown in your version of Telegram.

If it is already enabled, switch it off and back on. Lock Telegram with its in-app lock control or wait for its configured auto-lock interval, then open it and test again.
The exact label can differ by app version, language, and device. Telegram’s interface resources show biometric unlocking within its Passcode Lock settings, alongside the Auto-Lock control (Telegram interface example; Passcode Lock label). Having Face ID set up for the iPhone does not by itself enable Telegram’s app lock to use it. Telegram describes its app passcode as an additional app-level lock in its FAQ.
Check whether iOS allows Telegram to use Face ID
Open iPhone Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Other Apps and check that Telegram is enabled if it appears there. Also confirm Face ID is set up under Settings → Face ID & Passcode. Apple recommends checking these settings when Face ID does not work for apps or other authentication tasks (Apple Face ID guidance).
If Telegram is not listed, try switching its biometric option off and on in Telegram, force-quitting and reopening the app, then checking again. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that iOS will display a new permission prompt.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Know which passcode Telegram is requesting
- iPhone or iPad device passcode: This unlocks the device and can restore Face ID after iOS temporarily disables biometric authentication. Enter it on the device, then reopen Telegram and retry.
- Telegram app passcode: This is the separate code set under Telegram’s Passcode Lock settings. Enter it to open Telegram when biometric unlocking is unavailable or disabled.
Apple says Face ID becomes locked after five consecutive failed match attempts; the device passcode is required to recover biometric authentication (Apple developer documentation). Repeatedly retrying a failed scan is not a fix. If you are unsure which code the prompt means, read its wording carefully rather than guessing.
Check the TrueDepth camera and your face position
-
Remove the case temporarily and inspect the screen protector near the top of the display.
-
Wipe the front-camera area with a soft, lint-free cloth. Make sure no dirt, oil, or fingerprints cover the sensors.
-
Test with your face uncovered, without sunglasses that block infrared light. Keep your eyes, nose, and mouth visible.

Hold the device at a normal viewing distance. Apple gives a working distance of approximately 25–50 cm; supported orientations depend on the iPhone model and software version.
-
Try Face ID at the iPhone lock screen or in another app to see whether the problem extends beyond Telegram.
Apple recommends removing anything that covers the TrueDepth camera and checking that your face is visible to it (Apple’s troubleshooting steps). Face ID with a mask is not available in the same way on every supported device and software version, so test with your face uncovered first.
If Face ID fails everywhere, troubleshoot iOS
When Face ID also fails to unlock the device or authenticate in other apps, focus on the iPhone or iPad rather than Telegram:
-
Update iOS or iPadOS, then check Settings → Face ID & Passcode to confirm Face ID is configured for the features you use.
-
Remove obstructions around the TrueDepth camera, as described above.
-
Restart the device. Unlock it with the device passcode before testing Face ID again.
-
If your appearance has changed substantially, try setting up an alternative appearance in Face ID settings.

If Face ID still fails, reset Face ID in Settings → Face ID & Passcode and set it up again.
-
If you cannot set up Face ID or the camera appears damaged, contact Apple or an authorized service provider. Apple identifies service as appropriate when setup or the camera is not working (Apple support).
If Face ID works everywhere except Telegram
After checking Telegram’s biometric switch and iOS permission, try these low-risk steps in order:
-
Force-quit Telegram and open it again.
-
Restart the iPhone or iPad, then unlock it with the device passcode before testing.

Install available updates for Telegram from the App Store and for iOS or iPadOS through Settings.
-
Test the app again. An update may address a software issue, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Reinstalling Telegram is a last resort, not the first fix. Cloud chats generally resynchronize after you sign back in, but drafts, locally stored media, Secret Chats, and other device-local information may not be recoverable. Telegram says Secret Chats are device-specific rather than cloud-synchronized (Telegram FAQ). Before deleting the app, make sure you can access the account’s sign-in method and accept the possible loss of local data.
If Telegram keeps locking again
First check whether the configured timer explains the behavior. In Telegram → Settings → Privacy and Security → Passcode Lock, inspect Auto-Lock. It controls when Telegram locks after inactivity; changing it may change how often you see the lock screen, but it does not repair Face ID.

Then force-quit Telegram, update it and iOS, and restart the device. Confirm that the device date and time are set automatically; this has appeared in historical troubleshooting discussions, but it is not established as a universal fix. Telegram’s bug tracker includes a historical iOS report of unexpected relocking, which shows that version-specific issues have been reported—not that every current release has the same bug (Telegram bug report). If the problem persists, contact Telegram through the app’s support options or its official bug-reporting channels.
If you forgot the Telegram app passcode
The Telegram app passcode is separate from your iPhone passcode. If you have forgotten it, avoid repeated guesses. Telegram’s interface warns that forgetting the app passcode may require reinstalling the app (Telegram interface text). Before taking that step, confirm you can sign back in and consider what local data could be lost, especially Secret Chats and unsynchronized items. Do not assume that reinstalling restores every conversation or file.

Telegram passkeys are a separate sign-in mechanism. A passkey can use Face ID, a device PIN, or a fingerprint to authenticate to an account; it is not the Face ID control for opening Telegram’s app lock (Telegram passkey documentation; Telegram FAQ).
For a sign-in problem, check that you created a passkey for the Telegram account, that you are using the official Telegram app, and that the passkey is available through the device’s password manager or passkey provider. If it is not available, use Telegram’s normal account verification flow. Changing the app-lock setting will not repair a failed passkey.

Android users: Face ID is Apple’s name
Android phones use different biometric systems, and face-unlock capabilities vary by manufacturer and model. In Telegram’s Passcode Lock settings, look for the biometric option available on your device; do not assume every Android phone supports face unlocking for Telegram or provides the same security level as Apple Face ID. The Telegram interface terminology may also vary by platform and release (Telegram interface example).
Use this troubleshooting order
-
Enter the iPhone or iPad device passcode if Face ID may be locked.
-
Enable Telegram’s biometric unlock in Settings → Privacy and Security → Passcode Lock.
-
Check iPhone Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Other Apps for Telegram permission.
