Browsing can work while a VPN, proxy, firewall, TLS setting, incorrect clock, Store cache, account issue, or managed-network rule blocks Store traffic.
Start with the low-risk checks: restart Windows, confirm automatic date/time and the correct region, then run wsreset.exe. If the Store still fails, follow the network and policy tests below instead of jumping to registry edits or unofficial PowerShell scripts.
What 0x80072EFD means
This code is a connection-path symptom in Microsoft Store on Windows 10 or Windows 11. It can appear when the Store opens with “Check Your Connection,” searches fail, sign-in loops, downloads or updates stop, or purchases cannot be completed. The same hexadecimal code may appear in other Microsoft products, so these steps are specifically for Microsoft Store on Windows.

Windows 10 can still run Store apps, but Microsoft’s standard free Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, including free software updates, technical assistance and security fixes. That date does not by itself explain a Store failure. Source: Microsoft’s Windows 10 support information.
Identify the failure pattern first

Fixes in the safest order

Restart Windows
Select Start > Power > Restart. A restart may be required after a Windows update before Store installations work correctly. If several devices on the same network have Microsoft-service problems, restart the router as a basic diagnostic.

Confirm ordinary internet access
Open several unrelated websites and, if possible, another Microsoft website. If nothing loads, fix Wi-Fi, Ethernet or the ISP connection first. If browsers work, continue with Store-specific checks. Do not permanently disable Windows Defender Firewall or antivirus; use only a clearly reversible diagnostic option supplied by your security product.

Correct date, time zone and region
On Windows 11, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Turn on automatic time and automatic time-zone selection where appropriate, choose Sync now, and then check Settings > Time & language > Language & region. Windows 10 uses the corresponding Settings > Time & Language pages.

Reset the Store cache
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait while a blank Command Prompt window appears. It normally closes after roughly ten seconds and Microsoft Store opens automatically.
This clears Store cache data; it does not reinstall Windows or delete your installed apps. It cannot by itself remove a proxy block or managed-device restriction. Microsoft documents this procedure for Windows 10 and 11 at Microsoft Store doesn’t open.

Install Windows and Store updates
On Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. On Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
Then open Microsoft Store, select Library > Get updates. Older Windows 10 Store versions may show See more (…) > Downloads and updates > Get updates. Restart after updates finish. Source: Microsoft’s Store app troubleshooting.

Repair, then reset Microsoft Store
In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft Store, select its three-dot menu > Advanced options, and choose Repair. If the error remains, choose Reset. Windows 10 generally uses Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Microsoft Store > Advanced options.
Repair attempts to fix the app without clearing its local data. Reset can clear local data and require you to sign in again. These are built-in recovery controls; do not confuse them with unsupported commands that remove or re-register every AppX package. See Microsoft’s app troubleshooting steps.

Test VPN and proxy settings
Disconnect a consumer VPN temporarily, then test Store again. Open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and review any manually configured proxy. Disable one only when you recognize it and it is not required by an employer or school. Test the PC on a phone hotspot; if Store works there, the original router, DNS filter, captive portal, firewall or ISP path is the leading suspect.
On a managed computer, do not bypass organizational controls. Microsoft’s related documentation explains that proxy or firewall blocking can prevent Microsoft connections; see this Microsoft troubleshooting article and Store download troubleshooting.

Check TLS settings
- Press Windows key + R, enter
inetcpl.cpl, and select OK. - Open the Advanced tab and find the TLS options.
- Ensure Use TLS 1.0 and Use TLS 1.1 are unchecked.
- Ensure Use TLS 1.2 is checked, and enable Use TLS 1.3 when available.
Microsoft notes that TLS 1.3 may be labeled experimental on some systems. Do not enable obsolete TLS versions as a generic fix; settings may also be enforced by device policy. Source: Microsoft’s TLS guidance.
- Press Windows key + R, enter

Run the available troubleshooters
On Windows 10, the older Windows Store Apps troubleshooter is under Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Store Apps, when present. Current Windows 11 releases may instead offer automated Windows and network diagnostics through the Get Help app. These tools can find general problems but are not guaranteed to recognize 0x80072EFD. Use Network reset only as a last resort
On Windows 11, go to Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. On Windows 10, use Settings > Network & internet > Status > Network reset.

Network reset removes installed network adapters and their settings, reinstalls them after restart, may require Wi-Fi networks to be joined again, can require VPN or virtual-switch reconfiguration, and may set network profiles to Public. Microsoft describes it as a last step at Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows.

When the normal sequence does not work
Managed work or school device
An administrator can disable Microsoft Store or restrict its endpoints. Give IT the exact code, whether browsers work, whether a hotspot changes the result, the Windows edition and build, VPN or proxy status, affected users and the approximate start time. Do not alter policy or install unofficial Store packages. Source: Microsoft’s administrator restriction guidance.
Only one account fails
Sign out of Microsoft Store and sign back in, then test another Windows account if available. A second account working on the same PC points toward the original profile, Store registration or authorization, but does not by itself prove profile corruption. Avoid deleting credentials or the profile as an initial response.
Only downloads fail
When browsing works, concentrate on Store and Windows update state, Delivery Optimization, account authorization, available disk space, app compatibility and proxy or firewall rules affecting downloads. Delivery Optimization is used for Windows updates and Microsoft Store apps; Microsoft describes it at Essential services and connected experiences for Windows.
Store is missing or disabled
A missing Store may reflect Windows edition or administrator policy rather than a connection error. Check with the administrator or Microsoft Support before attempting package reinstallation.

Fixes to avoid
- Enabling TLS 1.0 or TLS 1.1.
- Permanently disabling Windows Firewall or antivirus.
- Registry cleaners and “PC repair” utilities.
- Deleting Store folders manually.
- Mass AppX re-registration or forum scripts presented as universal cures.
- Downloading Store packages from unofficial mirrors.
- Changing region without a genuine location or account reason.
There is no documented one-command cure for every 0x80072EFD case. The result of the hotspot, account and managed-network tests is more useful than repeatedly applying unrelated scripts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does 0x80072EFD mean my internet is down?
No. It means Microsoft Store could not complete its service connection. General web access can continue while Store traffic is blocked or misconfigured.
Will wsreset.exe delete my apps?
No. It resets Microsoft Store cache data. A later Store app Reset can clear local app data and require sign-in again.
Should I enable TLS 1.0 or TLS 1.1?
No. Microsoft’s current related guidance says to leave those versions unchecked and use TLS 1.2, plus TLS 1.3 when available.
