There are not ten equally capable, permanently free parental-control extensions for Chrome. The practical shortlist combines genuine filters, local website blockers, freemium services, and two browser/device controls that are often safer than an extension alone. For a supervised Chromebook, start with Google Family Link; for category and YouTube filtering, consider Blocksi; for detailed local schedules, LeechBlock NG is the stronger free choice.
Quick comparison

Which option should you choose?
Best for a supervised Chromebook: Google Family Link
Family Link is not a Chrome extension, but it is usually the better first choice for a child’s supervised Chromebook. Google documents Chrome website filtering, specific-site allow and block rules, site-permission controls, Incognito restrictions, and the ability to allow or block Chrome Web Store extensions. See Google’s Chrome and Web guidance.
Chromebook supervision requires ChromeOS 71 or later according to Google’s documentation. The parent should own the Chromebook, disable Guest mode and control which accounts may sign in: Chromebook supervision requirements. On Windows, macOS and Linux, Google warns that signing out, switching profiles or using another browser can prevent Chrome-specific settings from applying.
Best free category filter: Blocksi AI Web Filter
Blocksi’s listing claims 85-plus web-filter categories, adult-content and malware protection, more than 30 YouTube categories, channel and keyword rules, SafeSearch enforcement, keyword page analysis, custom blacklists and whitelists, application filters and time-based controls. The listing showed version 3.1.2, an April 13, 2026 update, about 2,000 users and a 2.3/5 score from 15 ratings when checked: Chrome Web Store listing. Those small-sample signals are a reason to test it rather than call it universally reliable.

Best lightweight adult-content filter: SafeBrowse Parent Control
SafeBrowse claims built-in adult and unsafe-site blocking, custom blocked and allowed domains, adult-image blurring on Google Images and risky sites, bad-word filtering, no account requirement and local data handling: listing. Its approximately 100 users and 5.0/5 score from nine ratings are too small to establish long-term reliability. Treat it as a basic local filter, not a managed family platform.
Best established manual blocker: BlockSite
The current BlockSite listing advertises custom blocklists, scheduled blocking, password protection, daily usage limits, browsing insights and Android and iOS apps: current listing. It showed version 7.1.1, a July 26, 2026 update, 1,000,000 users and about 32,300 ratings averaging 4.5/5 when checked. The listing showed version 4.3.0, a July 13, 2026 update, approximately 1,000 users and a 4.0/5 score from 16 ratings. Pro features were listed at $2.99 monthly, $24.99 yearly or $49.99 lifetime. Its privacy disclosure lists personally identifiable, payment, authentication, communications and website-content data, so “on-device insights” should not be read as “the extension handles no data.”

What “free” means in this list
- Free forever: the advertised core works without a subscription, usually with local-only controls.
- Limited free: important restrictions apply, such as Qustodio’s one-device allowance.
- Free trial: the service works temporarily before payment is required, as with Mobicip’s broader offering.
- Free extension, paid platform: the browser component is only one part of a subscription service.
How to install and configure an extension safely
- Open the product’s official Chrome Web Store URL and select Add to Chrome.
- Read the requested permissions, then confirm with Add extension.
- Open Chrome’s Extensions menu and configure categories, domains, schedules, passwords or allowlists.
- Test a blocked site and an approved educational site, then restart Chrome and test again.
- Keep the parent-controlled account separate from the child’s profile and document any approved exceptions.
Family Link path
- Open the Family Link app and select the child.
- Tap Controls, then Google Chrome and Web.
- Open Advanced settings and turn Extensions on or off.
Google documents this workflow at support.google.com. For Chromebook supervision, use the parent-owned account, disable Guest mode and restrict sign-in accounts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why browser extensions are easy to bypass
- Removing or disabling the extension through Chrome’s extensions page.
- Switching to Edge, Firefox, Safari, another Chrome profile or Guest mode.
- Signing out of a supervised account on computers where Family Link settings do not follow the device.
- Using a VPN, proxy, alternate domain, cached page or embedded content.
- Changing the device clock, resetting the browser or using another phone, computer or console.
No ordinary extension is unbreakable. If a child has administrator access to the operating-system account, local extensions are deterrents rather than firm enforcement. Device ownership, supervised accounts and restricted sign-in matter more than any single extension.

Filtering, schedules and YouTube: important differences
A category database can identify adult content, violence, gambling, drugs, malware or phishing without a parent entering every domain. A manual blocker generally cannot. Keyword and AI systems can also create false positives involving sex education, health information, news, LGBTQ+ resources or school material, so keep an allowlist and a parent-approval process.
YouTube deserves separate testing. Blocking youtube.com does not necessarily filter individual videos, Shorts, channels, comments, searches or embedded players. Blocksi is the option in this list that explicitly advertises YouTube categories, channels and keywords.
Schedules also differ: fixed windows, bedtime rules, per-site limits, total browser limits, “minutes per hour,” temporary pauses and lockdown are not interchangeable. Confirm whether a rule survives a browser restart and whether it applies to every child profile.
Privacy checks before installation
- Read the Chrome Web Store privacy disclosure and requested permissions.
- Check whether browsing history, page content, search queries, account identifiers or activity reports leave the device.
- Look for a named developer, current update history, privacy policy and deletion controls.
- Do not infer privacy from popularity: BlockSite discloses web-history handling, while LeechBlock NG says it does not collect or use user data.
- Remember that SiteBlocker’s disclosure lists several sensitive data categories despite its on-device-data claims.
The Federal Trade Commission’s report on parental-control software documents security and privacy risks in this category: FTC report.

- Supervised Chromebook: use Family Link first; add a narrowly scoped extension only if a missing filter requires it.
- Younger child needing category filtering: test Blocksi or SafeBrowse, with allowlists for legitimate health and school resources.
- Teen needing schedules: choose LeechBlock NG, BlockSite or SiteBlocker according to the required schedule and privacy trade-off.
- Several devices and remote reports: evaluate Qustodio or Mobicip rather than stacking Chrome extensions.
- Privacy-first family: prefer account and device controls, minimize permissions and favor local-only rules where practical.
- Mixed browsers, phones, apps and consoles: use operating-system, DNS, router or full parental-control coverage; Chrome alone cannot enforce those devices.
Bottom line
For most families, “ten free extensions” is the wrong target. Use Google Family Link for a supervised Chromebook, Blocksi when category and YouTube rules matter, LeechBlock NG for sophisticated local schedules, and BlockSite for straightforward manual blocking. Choose Qustodio or Mobicip only when cross-device management justifies their free-tier limits or subscription model, and treat every browser extension as one layer—not a bypass-proof safety system.
