It paired Xfce 4.14 with an Ubuntu 18.04 LTS base and was a credible Windows 7 transition at the time. It is not a safe choice for an internet-connected computer in 2026: its promised security updates ended in April 2023. Choose a currently supported operating system instead.
Important: The details below describe the 2019 release. For a current Zorin installation, consider Zorin OS 18.1 Lite or another maintained distribution.
What Zorin OS 15 Lite was
Zorin OS 15 Lite was the streamlined edition of Zorin OS 15, intended for older and lower-specification computers. Zorin announced it on November 20, 2019, shortly before Microsoft ended standard Windows 7 support on January 14, 2020. The release announcement said it was designed to run on computers as old as 15 years; that was Zorin’s target, not a guarantee for every machine.
Lite used the Xfce 4.14 desktop and Linux kernel 5.0. Its base was Ubuntu 18.04 LTS; the broader Zorin OS 15 announcement identifies Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS with the Hardware Enablement stack. Zorin promised security updates for the release through April 2023. Zorin’s Lite announcement and its Zorin OS 15 release announcement provide those details.

- Reliable---With an Ubuntu and Linux foundation, Zorin OS is built on the same Open Source software that powers government, research, and enterprise systems around the world.
- Dual Boot---You can install Zorin OS alongside Windows or macOS to keep your files and apps. You'll be able to choose which OS to use at each boot-up
“Based on Ubuntu” describes the underlying packages and infrastructure, not the whole experience. Zorin added its own desktop presentation, themes, layout choices, utilities, curated applications, and integrations. The Ubuntu LTS label also did not mean indefinite support: Zorin published a separate support endpoint for this release.
Why Zorin positioned it as a Windows 7 replacement
The Windows 7 comparison was deliberate. Zorin described Lite as an option for people moving away from Windows 7 before its end of support. Microsoft lists that date as January 14, 2020; after it, ordinary users no longer received standard security updates. Microsoft explains what unsupported Windows means.
For a Windows user, the appeal was a familiar desktop pattern: a bottom panel, application menu, system tray, file browser, and conventional windows. A lighter desktop could also give an aging computer a new operating system rather than requiring an immediate hardware replacement. Zorin highlighted a refreshed theme, six color variants, light and dark modes, animations, and settings in Zorin Appearance.
But “replacement” meant an alternative operating system and interface, not automatic compatibility with Windows programs. Linux applications, web services, or compatibility tools such as Wine may cover some needs, but Windows software must be checked app by app. A compatibility layer is not a guarantee.

Xfce was chosen to keep the desktop relatively lean compared with the standard Zorin desktop. That can reduce desktop overhead, but it does not make every old computer fast: processor capability, memory, storage condition, graphics support, and the work being done all matter. A modern browser with many tabs or demanding web applications can still tax a low-spec machine.
The wider Zorin OS 15 release also brought features that should be understood as Zorin OS 15-era features, not as exclusive to Lite or necessarily unchanged today. They included:
- Zorin Connect: Android phone integration for notifications, photo browsing, SMS conversations and replies, file and link sharing, and remote or media control.
- Software and productivity: Flatpak support alongside Snap, Firefox as the default browser, Evolution with Microsoft Exchange support, Do Not Disturb mode, and a To Do app with optional Google Tasks and Todoist synchronization.
- Hardware and usability additions: NVIDIA drivers available from the live ISO, captive-portal detection, bulk file renaming, Thunderbolt 3 support, and a preview of Wayland.
These are described in the Zorin OS 15 announcement. They do not establish that a particular old laptop’s peripherals would work without extra setup.
Would it have suited an aging Windows 7 PC?
In 2019, it was a reasonable fit for someone who wanted web browsing, email, documents, media playback, and file management on compatible older hardware, and who was willing to use Linux applications or web alternatives. Zorin’s familiar layout could ease the transition, but application retraining and hardware checks remained part of the move.

Suitability depends on the whole machine and the user’s workload:
- Processor and architecture: Older Windows 7 PCs may have 32-bit processors. Do not assume a current Linux image supports one.
- Memory and storage: A mechanical hard drive or failing drive can dominate the experience. An SSD can be a practical upgrade, though it cannot fix unsupported hardware or a demanding workload.
- Graphics and peripherals: Check Wi-Fi, printers, scanners, Bluetooth, webcam, audio, and graphics. Linux support is broad but not universal, and vendor utilities may be Windows-only.
- Applications and browser use: LibreOffice or web-based Microsoft 365 can handle many office tasks, with possible document-formatting differences. GIMP, Krita, and Linux video editors are alternatives, subject to hardware limits. Steam and Proton work for some games, but launcher and anti-cheat compatibility varies. Verify essential business software with its vendor.
A lighter desktop reduces one part of the workload; it cannot make modern websites lightweight or guarantee smooth video conferencing, high-resolution streaming, or large numbers of browser tabs.
Why Zorin OS 15 Lite is not a current recommendation
Zorin promised security updates for OS 15 through April 2023, and that period has passed. Its Ubuntu 18.04-era base and packages are obsolete for a normal, internet-connected daily desktop in 2026. Do not treat “LTS” as evidence that this particular Zorin release remains supported.
Keeping Windows 7 in a dual-boot setup does not solve the problem: an unsupported Windows installation remains exposed if used online. Dual booting also adds partition and bootloader risks, and a virtual machine may be too demanding for the old hardware that motivated Lite in the first place.
What to install instead in 2026
Zorin’s current technical information identifies Zorin OS 18.1 as the current release, based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, with security updates through at least June 1, 2029. Its Lite edition uses Xfce. Current Zorin releases support 64-bit x86 Intel and AMD processors, so check architecture before downloading. See Zorin’s current release details.
| Situation | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| Older, compatible 64-bit computer with limited resources | Zorin OS 18.1 Lite |
| Somewhat stronger computer and preference for the standard desktop | Zorin OS 18.1 Core |
| Very old 32-bit computer | Look for a currently maintained distribution that explicitly supports its processor architecture; current Zorin releases are 64-bit x86. |
| Essential Windows-only software | Check for a supported web version or Linux alternative; otherwise retain a supported Windows environment. |
| Failing or exceptionally slow hardware | Consider repairing or replacing the storage or computer rather than relying on a lighter desktop alone. |
Zorin’s published general minimums are a 1 GHz dual-core 64-bit Intel or AMD processor, 2 GB RAM, 15 GB storage for Core, and an 800×600 display. These are current general requirements, not historical Zorin OS 15 Lite requirements; the 2019 Lite announcement did not provide a complete minimum-hardware table. Consult the current system requirements and current installer documentation for the edition you plan to use.
Lite is available in the Zorin OS 17 and 18 series, but Zorin says it plans to sunset the official Lite edition from Zorin OS 19 onward. The project says users will be able to install stock Xfce packages then, but without the Zorin-specific Lite optimizations and integration. Zorin also notes that its improved standard editions can run on computers with as little as 2 GB of RAM and may outperform Lite in some tasks, so Lite is not automatically the fastest option. Details are in Zorin’s Lite documentation.
Safe migration checklist for a current Zorin installation
- Back up and verify your files. Copy documents, photos, browser exports, email data, and application-specific files to external storage or a cloud service, then confirm the backup opens on another device.
- Check the hardware. Confirm a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor, available memory and storage, drive health, firmware mode, and support for Wi-Fi, graphics, printer, and other essential devices.
- Download the supported release. Use Zorin’s official download page. The old OS 15 Lite image is for preservation or controlled offline use, not a daily internet-connected installation.
- Verify the ISO checksum. Compare its SHA-256 value with the value published by Zorin to check that the download is intact and unaltered.
- Create a bootable USB. Use a reputable image-writing utility and a USB drive whose contents you can erase; writing the installer normally wipes the drive.
- Boot from USB and test before installing. Use the computer maker’s boot-menu key, which varies by model—common examples include F12, Esc, F9, F10, or Delete. In the live environment, check Wi-Fi, sound, display resolution, keyboard, touchpad, Bluetooth, webcam, suspend/resume, and external drives.
- Choose installation carefully. “Erase disk” removes the existing Windows installation. Manual partitioning and dual boot require greater care and a verified backup; encryption can add recovery complexity and may affect performance on very old hardware.
- Update and restore selectively. After installation, apply supported updates and drivers, then restore files and install Linux alternatives or compatible web apps. Test critical workflows before wiping or disposing of the old Windows installation.
If the installer will not boot or hardware fails in the live session
- Re-download the image, verify its checksum, or recreate the USB with a different drive.
- Try another USB port; USB 2.0 can be worth trying on very old computers.
- Check whether the machine uses legacy BIOS or UEFI and select the matching boot mode; disable Fast Boot if it interferes.
- If graphics produce a black screen, try the installer’s safe or proprietary-graphics-disabled option when available.
- Use Ethernet or a compatible USB Wi-Fi adapter temporarily if the internal wireless chipset is unsupported.
- Keep the original Windows disk or a full image untouched until the new installation and essential tasks have been validated.
Verdict: convincing in 2019, obsolete as a 2026 download
Zorin OS 15 Lite was a genuine, deliberately Windows 7-oriented release: Xfce 4.14, an Ubuntu 18.04 LTS base, and a target of aging computers made it a credible migration option in late 2019. Its support promise ended in April 2023. For a new installation now, choose a supported operating system matched to the computer’s architecture, condition, and software needs.
