Ubuntu 15.04 “Vivid Vervet” is obsolete and unsupported. Released April 23, 2015, it reached end of life on February 4, 2016, so use it only for offline historical work, compatibility testing, or an isolated virtual machine—not for everyday internet use. The official Ubuntu archive still hosts the main desktop ISOs; availability of each separate flavor ISO must be checked independently.
Ubuntu’s release records and its February 2016 security notice document its support status.
Where to download the main Ubuntu 15.04 ISO
The verified first-party location for Ubuntu itself is the Ubuntu 15.04 old-release directory. It contains desktop and server images, including 64-bit AMD64 and 32-bit i386 desktop ISOs. The desktop images are approximately 1.1 GB each in that archive; sizes for flavor ISOs should not be inferred from them. The broader old-release index identifies this as an archive of obsolete Ubuntu releases, not a current download mirror.
For a typical interactive desktop installation, select a file named ubuntu-15.04-desktop-…iso, not a server image. The archive’s desktop images can also start a live session for trying the system before installing.

ubuntu-15.04-desktop-amd64.iso |
The computer has a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor; this is the usual choice for compatible PCs and virtual machines. |
ubuntu-15.04-desktop-i386.iso |
The target has a genuinely 32-bit processor or a specific legacy requirement for a 32-bit installation. |
| Server ISO | You specifically need the historical server installer; it is not the normal choice for a graphical desktop. |
AMD64 is the architecture label used for AMD64- or EM64T-compatible processors, including most 64-bit Intel and AMD PCs. Choose i386 only if the hardware or reproduction requirement demands it. Many newer systems cannot boot a 32-bit operating system. A 2015 installer may also fail on modern firmware, graphics, Wi-Fi, storage controllers, RAID configurations, or NVMe drives.
Which Ubuntu 15.04 flavors were official?
The 2015 Ubuntu announcement and Vivid release notes document the historical lineup below. These are the 15.04 editions, not a reconstruction from today’s flavor list. The standard Ubuntu desktop used Unity; the community flavors offered different desktops or specialized defaults.

|---|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu | Unity | The standard Ubuntu desktop experience of that period. | Confirmed in the main Ubuntu archive. |
| Kubuntu | KDE Plasma | A feature-rich, highly customizable desktop with a conventional workflow. | Separate flavor availability must be checked; not established by the main Ubuntu directory. Project: Kubuntu. |
| Lubuntu | LXDE | A relatively lightweight desktop for older or lower-resource hardware, subject to that machine’s actual limits. | Separate flavor availability must be checked. Project: Lubuntu. |
| Ubuntu MATE | MATE | A traditional desktop layout and the Ubuntu MATE release welcomed as an official community flavor for 15.04. | Separate flavor availability must be checked. Project: Ubuntu MATE. |
| Xubuntu | Xfce | A conventional, relatively light desktop focused on simplicity. | Separate flavor availability must be checked. Project: Xubuntu. |
| Ubuntu GNOME | GNOME Shell | The GNOME-centered desktop experience of that release. | Separate flavor availability must be checked. Historical project: Ubuntu GNOME. |
| Ubuntu Kylin | Chinese localization and region-specific integration | A desktop designed for Chinese users and localization needs. | Separate flavor availability must be checked. Project: Ubuntu Kylin. |
| Ubuntu Studio | Multimedia production | A preconfigured environment for audio, video, graphics, photography, and creative work. | Separate flavor availability must be checked. Its 15.04 release announcement confirms that release; project: Ubuntu Studio. |
The historical flavor list is recorded in the Ubuntu 15.04 release announcement. That announcement specifically welcomed Ubuntu MATE as an official community flavor. Ubuntu MATE is a separate flavor image with its own desktop and default applications, not simply a theme applied to the standard Ubuntu desktop.
Finding flavor ISOs without mistaking a project page for an archive
The main old-release directory confirms Ubuntu’s own images; it does not establish that every flavor’s ISO is stored there or still available. Flavors historically used separate download infrastructure, and their current project sites may focus on supported releases rather than preserve 15.04 files. A project homepage is useful for context, but its existence is not proof that it hosts a historical ISO.

- Stable and fast Internet access are the characteristic of the NetCard, ensuring you a good Internet experience
- Start with the official Ubuntu directory for the standard Ubuntu 15.04 image.
- For a flavor, check that flavor’s own project site or an official flavor-specific archive for an explicitly labeled 15.04 image.
- Confirm that the file is the intended edition and architecture before downloading it. Do not substitute a similarly named image from an unverified mirror.
- If no trustworthy official archive can be confirmed, treat that flavor ISO as unavailable rather than relying on a random republished copy.
Verify the ISO and create installation media
Download the matching metadata files offered alongside the ISO, such as a manifest, file list, or checksum file. If an authoritative SHA-256 checksum is available, compute the local value and compare every character with the published value:
sha256sum ubuntu-15.04-desktop-amd64.iso
Do not treat a checksum found on an unrelated mirror as authoritative. If no trustworthy published checksum is available, the ISO’s integrity cannot be confirmed by this comparison.

For most people, a reputable graphical image writer is the safer option: select the downloaded ISO and the intended USB drive, start the write, then safely eject the drive. The exact controls depend on the application. Writing an image erases the selected USB drive.
Advanced Linux users only: the following example is destructive if the device is wrong. First inspect device names with lsblk. Replace /dev/sdX with the whole USB device—not a partition such as /dev/sdX1—and verify it carefully. A mistaken target can erase another disk.
lsblk
sudo umount /dev/sdX*
sudo dd if=ubuntu-15.04-desktop-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M status=progress conv=fsync
Common installation and boot problems
- USB does not appear in the boot menu: use the computer’s firmware boot menu and check that the image writer completed successfully and wrote a bootable image.
- “No bootable device” appears: verify the ISO if an authoritative checksum is available, and check that the writer targeted the whole USB device rather than a partition.
- The screen goes black or graphics fail: try a compatibility graphics option if offered, or test the ISO in a virtual machine. Hardware support from this 2015 release is not assured on current machines.
- The 32-bit image will not start: confirm that the CPU can boot i386 software and that the firmware’s boot settings suit the media.
- The installer cannot find the disk: older installers may not handle modern storage controllers, RAID modes, NVMe devices, or current firmware well.
- Installation finishes but repositories fail: normal package mirrors should not be assumed to serve an end-of-life release. Do not change repository addresses using an untested procedure.
- HTTPS sites report clock or certificate errors: obsolete certificates, browsers, and cryptographic libraries can prevent modern services from working correctly.
- The installer hangs: verify the image, then try a different USB drive or writing method, or use a virtual machine to separate media problems from physical-hardware compatibility.
When Ubuntu 15.04 is—and is not—a sensible choice
Use it only when reproducing a historical environment, testing legacy software or hardware, or studying the 2015 desktop lineup. Prefer an isolated virtual machine with networking disabled unless networking is essential to the experiment. If you install it on physical hardware, keep it offline or tightly isolated.
It is unsuitable for everyday browsing, email, banking, shopping, password management, internet-facing servers, or a primary computer on untrusted networks. It no longer receives normal security support, and ordinary supported update channels should not be expected to work. For regular use, choose a currently supported Ubuntu release or flavor; the current Ubuntu release documentation describes the present lineup. A current release is a different operating system version, not a replacement download for Ubuntu 15.04.
