If Snapchat will not open incoming Snaps, check Snapchat’s status page first, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, update Snapchat on both phones, fully close and reopen the app, restart your phone, and clear Snapchat’s cache. Test another Snap before reinstalling anything: whether one Snap or every Snap fails determines the safest next step.
First, check whether Snapchat is down
Open Snapchat’s official status page. On August 18, 2026, it showed “All Systems Operational” and no incident for August 16–18. That status is useful for broad outages, but it cannot rule out a regional, account-specific, carrier, device, or newly developing failure.
If the page reports an incident or degraded performance, wait for Snapchat to resolve it instead of repeatedly deleting and reinstalling the app. If systems are operational, continue with the local checks below.
Identify what is actually failing
“Cannot open a Snap” can describe several different symptoms:

- A notification arrives, but no Snap appears in Chat.
- Tapping a Snap shows “Tap to load,” with no response.
- The Snap loads forever, opens to a black or white screen, appears blurry or frozen, or crashes Snapchat.
- One friend’s Snaps fail while others work.
- Every Snap, Story, Chat attachment, or camera feature fails.
- A Snap is marked opened but its contents never display, or it disappears after an error.
These patterns can point to a connection, stale app data, an outdated app, limited storage, a device restriction, a Snapchat-side problem, or one damaged or expired item.
Fix 1: Switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data
Snapchat recommends a stable Wi‑Fi connection or stronger cellular service. Turn off Wi‑Fi and try mobile data, then reverse the test. Move closer to your router or to an area with better cellular reception. Temporarily disable a VPN, private relay, firewall, or filtering service if one is active.
Use the result diagnostically:
- Works on mobile data but not Wi‑Fi: investigate the router, DNS, firewall, or network filtering.
- Works on Wi‑Fi but not mobile data: check carrier coverage, data limits, and Snapchat’s mobile-data permission.
- Fails on both: continue with app, device, account, or service checks.
- Only one Snap fails: the individual Snap or conversation is more likely than your entire connection.

Fix 2: Update Snapchat on both devices
Snapchat specifically advises updating the app on both your device and the other person’s device. A sender using an older build can contribute to sending or loading failures.
- iPhone or iPad: App Store → profile picture → available updates → Snapchat → Update.
- Android: Google Play Store → profile picture → Manage apps & device → Updates available → Snapchat → Update.
- Amazon Fire: update Snapchat through the Amazon Appstore.
Snapchat lists these stores and update advice in My Snapchat app isn’t working right or is crashing. No universal Snapchat, iOS, or Android version applies to every device, so install the latest update your store offers.
Fix 3: Fully close and reopen Snapchat
Remove Snapchat from the recent-apps screen, rather than merely backing out of the conversation, then launch it again. This can refresh a stale Chat list, a pending Snap, or a session that remained open while you changed networks or accounts. Snapchat recommends this for loading and Chat problems.

Fix 4: Restart your phone
Perform a full restart, not just a screen lock. Snapchat’s Snaps guidance says to turn the device completely off for one full minute, then turn it back on: official instructions.
Fix 5: Clear Snapchat’s cache safely
Snapchat says clearing its in-app cache does not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats. Menu labels vary by platform, app version, region, and support-page revision, so look for Clear Cache in Snapchat’s privacy or data settings.
iPhone and iPad
- Open Snapchat and go to My Account or My Profile.
- Tap the gear icon for Settings.
- Scroll to App & Privacy.
- Tap My Privacy & Data.
- Under Manage My Data, tap Clear Cache, then Clear.
Android
- Open My Account or My Profile, then tap the gear icon.
- Go to App & Privacy → My Privacy & Data.
- Tap Clear Data → Clear Cache → Clear.
Snapchat’s cache instructions are at How do I clear my cache on Snapchat?. Do not confuse this in-app action with deleting account data or using Android’s system option to clear all app storage; those actions can have different consequences, including signing you out.

Fix 6: Check storage, permissions, and restrictions
- Make sure the phone has free storage.
- On iPhone, check Settings → Cellular/Mobile Data → Snapchat.
- On Android, check Settings → Apps → Snapchat → Mobile data and battery.
- Allow camera and local-photo access when the failure involves camera content or sending.
- Temporarily relax battery-saver or background-data restrictions if Snapchat is not refreshing.
These are practical device checks, not guarantees from Snapchat. Its Chat guidance links cache clearing with freeing storage and troubleshooting loading issues.

Only one Snap or conversation fails
Try another friend’s Snap, a Story, a saved Chat attachment, text Chat, and the camera. If those work, the sender’s upload may have failed, the conversation may be out of sync, or that Snap may have expired or become unavailable. Ask the sender to resend it. Reinstalling the app cannot be relied on to recover an expired or permanently failed Snap.
Every Snap fails
Prioritize the status page, network switching, updates, a full app close, device restart, cache clearing, and then a bug report. Do not infer a server failure solely because restarting did not help.

If Snapchat crashes or will not open
Follow this order:
- Restart the device.
- Install any pending operating-system update.
- Update Snapchat.
- Check available storage.
- Clear Snapchat’s cache if the app can open.
- Use Snapchat’s support site if the app still will not launch.
Reinstall only after confirming that Memories are backed up and that you know your login and verification details. Reinstallation can sign you out and create avoidable access or backup-status problems.
Ask the sender to resend the Snap
Contact the sender when only that person’s Snap is affected, other Snaps and Stories load normally, a notification appears without a loadable item, or the sender saw “sending” or an upload error. Resending is safer than changing account settings or deleting the app.
Report the bug when normal fixes fail
- Open My Account or My Profile.
- Tap the gear icon.
- Scroll to Support and Safety.
- Tap Bugs and Suggestions → Report a Bug.
- Follow the prompts.
