Firefox for iOS can turn an eligible webpage into a short AI summary when you shake your iPhone or tap a control. On an iPhone 15 Pro or newer running iOS 26 or later, Mozilla says the summary is generated on-device with Apple Intelligence; other supported devices send the page to Mozilla-hosted processing powered by Mistral Small 3.1.
What Firefox’s Shake to Summarize does
The feature summarizes the webpage currently open in Firefox. It is intended for long-form news stories, guides, product reviews, recipes, research articles and opinion pieces where you want the main points before deciding whether to read everything. It does not search the wider web or act as a general chatbot: the summary is based only on the page Firefox can extract.

Mozilla first rolled out Shake to Summarize for Firefox on iPhone in the United States on September 9, 2025, initially for English-language users. The 2026 news is an expansion: Mozilla added more iOS languages, brought the feature to Android, and introduced broader mobile AI controls. See Mozilla’s launch announcement at Mozilla’s September 2025 announcement and its May 2026 expansion announcement.
Apple Intelligence versus Mozilla’s cloud processing
“Apple Intelligence support” applies only to the hardware and software combination Mozilla specifies. It does not mean every iPhone running Firefox processes summaries locally.

| iPhone 15 Pro or later, iOS 26 or later, with Apple Intelligence enabled | On the iPhone, according to Mozilla | Apple Intelligence |
| Other supported iPhones | Mozilla-hosted service | Mistral Small 3.1, according to Mozilla’s support documentation |
| Page that is not eligible | No summary is generated | Reader View and length requirements still apply |
To use the local path, enable Apple Intelligence in Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri on iOS 26 or later. Mozilla’s stated cutoff is “iPhone 15 Pro or later”; do not assume that every iPhone compatible with iOS 26 meets it. Details are in Mozilla’s iOS support guide.
How to summarize a page
Shake the phone
- Open a qualifying article in Firefox for iOS.
- Shake the iPhone from side to side.
- Firefox starts generating a summary if the page meets its requirements.
Tap the address-bar button
- Open the qualifying page.
- Tap the lightning-bolt icon in the address bar.
- Tap it once to summarize. Do not hold the icon if that is your goal; Mozilla says holding it opens Reader View instead.
Use the website menu
- Open the page and tap the three-dot menu.
- Choose Summarize Page.
- Wait for Firefox to return the generated summary.
The tap-based options are useful if shaking is inconvenient or you want to avoid accidental activation.
Requirements, limits and language support
Reader View and word count
The page must support Firefox’s Reader View. Mozilla’s detailed support page lists a maximum of 3,000 words for iPhone 15 Pro or later using Apple Intelligence and 5,000 words for other devices using Mozilla’s cloud service. Mozilla’s promotional announcements generally say “under 5,000 words,” but the support-page limits are more specific; the lower Apple Intelligence limit is the one to use when troubleshooting.

Paywalled pages
Firefox can summarize only text visible in the browser. Text hidden behind a subscription wall or login is not available to the summarizer, so the feature does not bypass paywalls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDaily allowance
Mozilla’s support page says users can create up to five summaries per day; after that, you must wait for the allowance to reset. This service limit can change, so check Mozilla’s current documentation if the behavior differs.
Languages
Mozilla’s May 2026 announcement lists iOS support for English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Japanese. Summaries normally follow the webpage’s language, and Firefox provides a Settings > Page Summaries > Website Language control. Mozilla’s support page does not repeat Japanese in every example, so availability can vary during rollout by version, device and location.

The feature itself may also be unavailable because Mozilla describes it as a progressive rollout. An up-to-date Firefox app is required.
How to disable summaries or only the shake gesture
- Open Firefox on the iPhone.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Page Summaries.
- Turn off Summarize Pages to disable the feature, or turn off Shake to Summarize to disable only the physical gesture.
When the gesture is off, Mozilla says you can still use the lightning-bolt control or Summarize Page in the three-dot menu. Firefox’s mobile AI Controls, introduced in 2026, can provide additional per-feature controls; the choices shown can vary by device and region. Mozilla describes those controls at its mobile AI Controls overview.

On a compatible iPhone using Apple Intelligence, Mozilla describes the summary as being generated locally. If on-device intelligence is unavailable, Mozilla says the page content is sent to a Mozilla server for processing and the resulting summary is returned to the device. Mozilla’s privacy notice says it does not store the submitted content or generated summaries: Firefox Privacy Notice.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
That creates a practical privacy distinction. An iPhone 15 Pro or later with iOS 26 and Apple Intelligence enabled offers the local-processing route described by Mozilla. On other devices, page text is sent to Mozilla’s service. If sending content to a server is unacceptable, turn off Page Summaries or use the feature only for non-sensitive pages. Mozilla’s statement is a description of its policy, not an independent privacy audit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the summary is useful—and when it is not
Use it for triage: deciding whether a long article is worth reading, getting an initial orientation, or extracting broad themes from non-critical material. Because it uses only the current page, it can also keep a quick overview tied to the source rather than mixing in unrelated web results.
Mozilla warns that generative-AI summaries can contain mistakes. They may omit context or repeat an error in the original article. Check the source itself before relying on a summary for medical information, legal or financial decisions, safety instructions, breaking news, research findings, exact quotations, figures or technical procedures.

If no summary appears
The menu option is missing
- Confirm the page supports Reader View and contains enough extractable text.
- Try opening Reader View, then check the three-dot menu again.
- Check Firefox > Settings > Page Summaries and make sure summaries are enabled.
- Update Firefox in the App Store.
- On iOS 26 or later, check Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri if you expect on-device processing.
- Try a conventional article or guide instead of a heavily interactive page.
Shaking does nothing
Verify that Shake to Summarize is enabled, then use the lightning-bolt icon or Summarize Page menu item. The gesture is only one activation method.
The result is incomplete or wrong
Compare it with the original page and treat it as a reading aid, not a source. A paywalled article may produce only the portion visible in Firefox, and a page over the applicable word limit may not qualify at all.
Bottom line
Firefox’s feature is most useful when you want a fast first pass over an eligible article without copying text into another AI app. The strongest privacy case is an iPhone 15 Pro or later with iOS 26 and Apple Intelligence enabled, because Mozilla describes that path as on-device. Everyone else should understand that page content may be processed by Mozilla’s Mistral-powered service, alongside the Reader View requirement, device-specific word limits and five-summary daily cap.
