Start by matching your symptom to the affected layer; the fixes are different.

What connects Steam and Discord—and what does not
People often describe the issue as Steam failing to connect to Discord, but there is not one switch that guarantees every Steam game appears in Discord. Several separate features are involved:
- Account connection: Discord can show Steam under User Settings → Connections. This confirms an account link, not necessarily live game detection.
- Activity Sharing: Discord’s global and connection-level controls determine whether activity can be shared.
- Game detection: Discord may recognize a running game under Activity Settings → Registered Games.
- Rich Presence: A game can provide richer details than a basic detected game, but that depends on the game’s implementation.
- Game Overlay: This is the in-game Discord interface. It is separate from whether Discord displays your activity.
Discord’s Activity Sharing FAQ, updated July 7, 2026, describes its current activity controls. A linked Steam account does not by itself ensure every Steam title will appear as live activity.
Try the quick fixes first
- Check that both apps are online and updated. If Steam cannot sign in, go to Steam’s connectivity troubleshooting rather than treating it as an activity-detection problem.
- Restart both apps completely. Exit the game, choose Steam → Exit, then use Discord’s tray icon and select Quit Discord. Reopen Steam, wait for its pages to load, open Discord, and launch the game. If an app remains stuck, use Task Manager to end its remaining processes; do not force-close Steam during downloads or updates unless necessary.
- Enable activity sharing. In Discord desktop, open the gear beside your username → Activity Sharing and turn on Share my activity.
- Check the running game. Open Activity Settings → Registered Games. See whether the game is listed and enabled.
- Check the Steam connection, if you use one. Open User Settings → Connections and confirm Steam is listed. If the account link is the problem, remove and reconnect it using the steps below.
- Test without a VPN or proxy. Disconnect it temporarily and check whether Steam, Discord, or the authorization flow begins working. Restore your normal protection after the test.
- If only the overlay fails, change display mode. Try windowed or borderless-windowed mode instead of true fullscreen.
If one step identifies the fault, stop there; cache deletion, network resets, and reinstalls are later options, not the first fixes for missing activity.

Fix Discord not detecting a Steam game
Check Activity Sharing and Registered Games
- Open Discord desktop and select the gear beside your username.
- Choose Activity Sharing and make sure Share my activity is enabled.
- Check any applicable server or privacy controls that could restrict who sees your activity.
- Open Activity Settings → Registered Games while the Steam game is running.
- If the title is listed, make sure activity display is enabled for it. If it is missing, try manual registration.
The exact status display can vary with client version, privacy settings, and the game’s support for Rich Presence. Activity can be detectable without detailed Rich Presence, and a game’s Rich Presence features cannot be supplied by account linking alone.
Manually register a running game
- Launch the game through Steam and leave it running.
- Open Discord’s Registered Games area and choose the option to add or detect a game manually.
- Select the running game process and enable its activity display.
- Close and relaunch the game, then check Discord again.
Manual registration can help Discord recognize a process, but it cannot create Rich Presence features the title does not implement. If the entry vanishes, the game may be using a separate launcher process or a protected executable. Avoid unofficial Rich Presence injectors as a default fix: they can introduce account-security risks or conflict with anti-cheat rules.
Compare with another Steam game
Launch a second game that you know Discord detects. If that one appears, while the original does not, the likely problem is specific to the title, its launcher, or its process—not a broken Steam account connection. Check whether the game is a demo, playtest, beta, non-Steam build, or cloud-streamed session, and whether anti-cheat or a virtual machine affects detection.
Reconnect Steam to Discord
Use these steps when Steam is missing from Connections or its authorization appears stale:

- In Discord desktop, open User Settings → Connections.
- Find Steam. If it is already connected but the link is not behaving correctly, remove it.
- Restart Discord, return to Connections, and start the official Steam connection flow.
- Complete authorization in the browser window and check that Discord confirms the account is connected.
- Verify that the browser authorized the intended Steam account.
If the browser handoff stalls, allow pop-ups for the authorization flow and temporarily test without privacy extensions that may block it. A school, work, or managed network may also restrict authorization endpoints. Discord’s Account Connections FAQ describes the confirmation and notes that Discord Support cannot remove a connection on a user’s behalf. If the connection succeeds but a game remains absent, return to Activity Sharing and Registered Games; account linking is only one layer.
Fix Steam if it cannot connect
If Steam itself cannot sign in, Discord is not the first problem to troubleshoot. Steam identifies network configuration, conflicting programs, local network or ISP issues, and maintenance as possible causes in its sign-in troubleshooting flow.
- Check whether ordinary websites load on the same device.
- If available, test another network, such as a phone hotspot. If Steam works there, investigate the original router, ISP, DNS filtering, or managed network.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy and test Steam again.
- Check Windows Firewall and antivirus settings for Steam. Prefer a specific application permission over leaving protection disabled.
- Restart the router only if the issue appears to affect your local connection, not just Steam.
- If the connection problem may be service-side or maintenance-related, wait and retry rather than repeatedly changing local settings.
Steam’s Offline Mode guidance notes that features requiring an active Steam Network connection are unavailable in Offline Mode.
Optional Windows network reset
If the network is otherwise available but name resolution or Windows networking appears stuck, these general Windows recovery commands may help. They are not guaranteed Steam–Discord fixes and will not repair an outage, authorization problem, privacy setting, or unsupported game.

- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
ipconfig /flushdns. - Run
netsh winsock reset. - Restart Windows, then test Steam and Discord again.
Fix Discord activity that friends cannot see
If Discord detects the game on your profile but friends do not see it, focus on visibility rather than detection. In User Settings → Activity Sharing, confirm Share my activity is enabled and review any server-specific or privacy controls. If the activity is tied to a connected account, check that connection’s sharing option if one is shown. Discord’s activity controls can operate at global, connection, and game levels; seeing Steam under Connections does not prove that sharing is enabled at each relevant level.

The overlay is not required for game activity to appear in Discord. If status works but the in-game interface does not, troubleshoot the overlay separately.
- Use the Discord desktop app; mobile or browser Discord is not the path for an in-game desktop overlay.
- Open User Settings → Overlay and enable Game Overlay.
- Confirm the game is registered in Discord.
- Switch the game to windowed or borderless-windowed mode and relaunch it.
- Test with other overlays closed, including Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlay, and hardware-monitoring overlays.
- If the game crashes or becomes unstable, disable Discord overlay for that title.
Discord documents Game Overlay support for Windows 10 and Windows 11, not macOS or Linux, in its Game Overlay guide. Its overlay compatibility notes explain that true fullscreen can prevent the overlay from appearing and recommend borderless or windowed mode. On macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck running Linux, standard Discord overlay troubleshooting will not restore official overlay support; game activity may still work in some cases.
Check firewall, VPN, and other conflicts safely
VPNs, system proxies, third-party antivirus web shields, firewall rules, DNS filtering, and game-injection or capture utilities can interfere with connectivity or process detection. Discord’s troubleshooting guide discusses network conditions and VPN/firewall interference; Steam also recommends checking network configuration and conflicting programs.

- Disconnect a VPN or proxy only long enough to test, then reconnect it.
- Check whether Windows Firewall allows the official Steam and Discord applications.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection. If a test points to a block, use a narrow application exception only if appropriate for your device.
- On a school or work computer, ask the network administrator before changing managed security settings.
Running one app as administrator and the other normally can also make process access inconsistent. If permissions look like the issue, test both apps at the same privilege level for one session; avoid making administrator use permanent without a specific need.
Escalate only if the basic checks fail
Clear Discord’s cache
If Discord is otherwise malfunctioning after updates or a force-quit, fully quit it and clear its cache as a later troubleshooting step. Discord lists these cache locations in its troubleshooting guide:
- Windows:
%appdata%/discord/Cache - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/discord/Cache
Clearing these cache files is not the same as deleting your Discord account or server data. Avoid deleting other Discord folders indiscriminately.
Update or reinstall Discord
Check for client updates and restart Discord. Reinstall from the official Discord installer only if the app repeatedly fails to launch, crashes, or will not update; reinstalling is excessive when just one game’s status is missing. Discord’s troubleshooting guide also recommends fully force-quitting the app and checking the network before more disruptive steps.

Decide which support team to contact
- Steam: Contact Steam Support if the Steam client still cannot sign in after local network checks. Its Steam game and network issue guidance is another escalation route.
- Discord: Contact Discord Support if the desktop app fails across multiple games despite working Steam and enabled sharing controls.
- Game developer: Contact the game’s support if Discord detects other games but not that title, particularly when a launcher or anti-cheat is involved.
