MacBook Stuck on the Apple Logo and Won’t Boot? How to Fix It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A MacBook stuck on the Apple logo has started its boot process, but macOS has not finished loading. It is not automatically a sign that the computer is dead. If an update may still be installing, give it time; then work through the least risky steps first: disconnect accessories, try Safe Mode, open macOS Recovery, run Disk Utility’s First Aid, and reinstall macOS without erasing the drive. The steps differ for Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

Before troubleshooting, check whether the Mac is still updating

Apple says the logo means the Mac has found a startup disk and begun startup, not that macOS has loaded successfully. During a macOS update or upgrade, the progress bar can move slowly or appear paused for a while. A stalled-looking bar alone does not prove the Mac has frozen. Apple does not give one waiting time that fits every update, so consider whether the bar is moving and whether an installation is plausibly underway. Apple’s startup guidance explains what to do when the logo or progress bar remains on screen.

  • If the Mac is unusually hot, smells burnt, has been exposed to liquid, or has a swollen battery, stop using it and arrange service rather than continuing to restart it.
  • If the problem began after an update, avoid repeatedly interrupting an installation that still appears active.
  • If you have important files without a backup, treat data preservation as a priority. Do not erase or restore the Mac as an early troubleshooting step.

Force the Mac off and disconnect accessories

If there is no meaningful progress or the Mac is repeatedly restarting, force it off. On a MacBook with Touch ID, the Touch ID button is also the power button for this procedure.

  1. Press and hold the power button for up to 10 seconds, until the Mac turns off.
  2. Disconnect nonessential devices, including hubs, docks, external drives, displays and adapters, printers, audio equipment, SD cards, and other USB accessories.
  3. Connect power if needed, then turn the Mac on with no nonessential accessories attached.
  4. If it starts successfully, reconnect devices one at a time and restart as needed to identify whether one causes the problem.

Apple recommends this shutdown-and-disconnect sequence when a Mac remains on the Apple logo or progress bar. See Apple’s steps.

Identify whether your Mac has Apple silicon or an Intel processor

Safe Mode and Recovery use different startup procedures depending on the processor. If macOS opens, choose Apple menu → About This Mac: the window identifies an Apple chip, such as M1, M2, M3, or M4, or an Intel processor. If the Mac cannot start, check its model details using its serial number, purchase records, or packaging. Apple separates the two Recovery procedures in its macOS Recovery instructions.

Try Safe Mode

Safe Mode starts macOS with a limited set of software. It can help narrow down whether startup software, login items, extensions, or similar components are involved; it is not a guaranteed repair.

Apple silicon

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Press and hold the power button until Loading startup options appears.
  3. Select the startup volume.
  4. Hold Shift, then click Continue in Safe Mode.

Intel

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Turn it on and immediately hold Shift.
  3. Release the key when the login window appears.

Apple documents these startup options separately for Apple silicon and Intel. If Safe Mode opens, back up important files while you can. Then restart normally once. If the issue returns, remove recently added login items or software such as system utilities, antivirus tools, VPNs, or drivers; check whether the startup disk is nearly full; and install pending updates only after protecting important data. Reconnect external devices one at a time.

Open macOS Recovery

Recovery offers tools to check the startup disk, reinstall macOS, or restore from a Time Machine backup. Choose the startup method for your processor; do not use the Apple silicon power-button procedure on an Intel Mac.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple silicon

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Press and hold the power button until Loading startup options appears, then release it.
  3. Select Options (the gear icon), then select Continue.
  4. Authenticate with a user account if prompted.

Intel

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Turn it on and immediately hold Command-R.
  3. Release the keys when the Apple logo, a spinning globe, or the Recovery screen appears.

On Intel Macs, Option-Command-R starts Internet Recovery and may offer the latest macOS compatible with that Mac. Shift-Option-Command-R may offer the version originally supplied with the Mac, or the closest version still available. The result depends on the model, firmware, and available recovery software. Apple lists these startup-key options in its startup-key reference.

If Recovery does not appear, retry the method for your processor. A wired keyboard may help if a wireless or third-party keyboard is not recognized; keyboard type and Boot Camp configuration can affect startup-key behavior on Intel Macs. Apple’s Recovery guide covers the available recovery tools.

Run First Aid before reinstalling macOS

In Recovery, open Disk Utility. If available, choose View → Show All Devices. Disk Utility may show volumes such as Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD – Data, an APFS container that holds volumes, and the physical internal storage device. These are different levels of the disk structure.

  1. Run First Aid on the relevant volumes and containers, following the hierarchy shown in Disk Utility.
  2. If Disk Utility reports that repairs succeeded, restart and see whether macOS loads.
  3. If it says the disk cannot be repaired or the internal storage is missing, stop before erasing anything if your files matter.

First Aid can address some file-system problems, but its result does not establish that all storage, firmware, or other hardware is healthy. A missing disk or repeated repair failure may need professional diagnosis. Apple’s Recovery documentation describes Disk Utility’s repair and erase functions; its stuck-startup steps put disk repair before macOS reinstallation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall macOS without erasing the startup disk

If the Mac still will not start after First Aid, return to the Recovery utilities window and choose the option to reinstall macOS. Select the existing startup volume when prompted, keep the Mac connected to power, use a reliable internet connection, and do not close the lid or interrupt the installation.

Reinstalling macOS is not the same as choosing Erase Mac or erasing a disk in Disk Utility. Back up first whenever possible, and read each prompt carefully. Apple’s process, available versions, and authentication requirements can differ by model and macOS release. A reinstall may not work if the storage is failing, Recovery is damaged, internet access is unavailable, or there is a firmware, activation, or security problem. Apple lists reinstalling as a step after startup-disk repair when a Mac remains stuck at the logo or progress bar: Apple’s troubleshooting guide. Recovery also provides options to erase or restore a Mac, but those are distinct operations with different consequences: macOS Recovery options.

Run Apple Diagnostics

Diagnostics can identify a possible hardware issue and provide a reference code to share with a service provider. Before running it, connect the Mac to AC power, remove most external devices, and place it on a hard, flat surface with good ventilation.

Apple silicon

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Press and hold the power button until startup options appear.
  3. Select Options, then hold Command-D until Diagnostics starts.

Intel

  1. Turn on the Mac and immediately hold D.
  2. If Diagnostics does not start, try Option-D.

In macOS Tahoe 26 and later, Diagnostics may ask you to choose a particular test, such as for the display, keyboard, or trackpad; earlier versions may run tests automatically. A passing test does not prove every component is healthy, and a code is a diagnostic indication rather than a complete diagnosis. Record the exact code and give it to Apple or a qualified repair provider. Apple’s Diagnostics instructions describe how to start the test.

Advanced option: firmware revive or restore

Firmware trouble is a possibility on some Apple silicon Macs and Intel Macs with the T2 Security Chip, particularly after a failed installation or when a persistent blank screen or firmware recovery indicator appears. This is a later step, not a substitute for the basic startup checks.

  • Revive: Apple recommends trying this first; it does not erase the Mac.
  • Restore: Returns the affected Mac to factory settings and erases it. Do not choose this if the data matters and you do not have a backup unless you have decided that erasure is acceptable.

Apple’s procedure requires the affected Mac, another Mac running macOS 14 or later, internet access, and a compatible USB-C cable that supports both data and charging. Apple warns not to use a Thunderbolt 3 cable for this procedure. Because the steps are technical and a restore erases the Mac, consider a technician first if files are irreplaceable. See Apple’s firmware revive and restore instructions.

What to do for other startup symptoms

Apple logo with no progress bar

Disconnect accessories and try the shutdown-and-restart steps. If the logo remains, use the correct Safe Mode and Recovery procedure above. The logo indicates startup began, but it does not identify the cause of the failure.

Progress bar stops or the Mac restarts repeatedly

If an update may still be active, allow it to continue rather than relying on a fixed wait time. If it is clearly frozen or looping, force the Mac off, remove accessories, and move on to Safe Mode and Recovery. In Recovery, check the disk before attempting a non-erasing reinstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Black or blank screen

Confirm the Mac has power and disconnect external displays and adapters. If it remains blank, try the appropriate Recovery or Diagnostics procedure. A persistent blank screen after ordinary troubleshooting can point to a display, firmware, or other hardware issue; arrange service if the startup tools will not open.

Question-mark folder, prohibitory symbol, or error code

These are different startup problems from simply remaining on the Apple logo. Use Apple’s instructions for the exact symbol or code rather than assuming the same fix applies; Apple’s startup troubleshooting page covers related startup screens.

Stuck at “Loading startup options”

That screen is part of the Apple silicon startup-options process. If it never advances, force the Mac off once and try again. If Options or Recovery still will not load, contact service rather than repeatedly interrupting the Mac.

Internal storage does not appear in Disk Utility

Do not erase or reinstall blindly. The missing device may reflect a storage or logic-board fault, severe file-system damage, or a firmware or security problem. If the data is not backed up, seek professional diagnosis or data-recovery advice before destructive steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to stop and arrange service

Apple advises arranging service if the Mac continues to start to the Apple logo or progress bar after its troubleshooting steps. Seek help sooner if any of these apply:

  • The Mac cannot enter Safe Mode, Recovery, or Diagnostics.
  • Disk Utility cannot see the internal storage, or First Aid repeatedly fails.
  • The Mac repeatedly restarts after a reinstall, shows a persistent blank screen, or displays a firmware error.
  • There has been liquid exposure, a drop, overheating, or battery swelling.
  • You are considering an erase or restore, but the data is not backed up.
  • The Mac may have a logic-board or integrated-storage fault, or remains covered by warranty or AppleCare.

Apple’s repair page offers in-person and mail-in options and presents estimates based on the model and service circumstances; there is no single price that applies to every Mac. Check Apple Mac laptop repair options or locate an Apple repair provider. Authorized providers may set their own out-of-warranty fees. Independent Repair Providers may have access to Apple parts, tools, training, service guides, and diagnostics, but their repairs are not covered by Apple’s warranty or AppleCare; a provider may offer its own warranty. Self Service Repair is limited to certain regions and models, and is not a practical first step for most owners facing an unexplained boot failure. Apple’s Diagnostics page describes that availability.

Prepare before handing the Mac over

  • Write down the Mac’s model or serial number, symptoms, what changed before the failure, and the steps you tried.
  • Record any Apple Diagnostics reference code.
  • Tell the provider whether a backup exists and whether preserving data is more important than restoring the Mac quickly.
  • Have your Apple Account details available if requested, and ask about Find My or firmware-password requirements. If the Mac will not start, Apple says you may be able to remove it from Find Devices using another device.
  • Back up if the Mac becomes usable again. Before service, follow Apple’s guidance on preparing the Mac, including turning off Find My when possible: Preparing your Mac for service.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
