To enable Battery Saver on a Chromebook, click the battery icon in the bottom-right corner, open Settings → System preferences → Power, and switch on Battery Saver. The mode reduces power use across ChromeOS; it is not just a screen-brightness shortcut.
These labels reflect Google’s current Chromebook instructions, although wording can vary by ChromeOS release, device, language, or administrator policy. See Google’s Battery Saver help page for the current reference.
How to turn on Battery Saver
- Make sure the Chromebook is running on battery power. Battery Saver is unavailable while the device is plugged in.
- Click the battery icon or the system tray in the bottom-right corner of the shelf.
- Select Settings.
- Choose System preferences.
- Open Power, then turn on Battery Saver.
If your menus use slightly different labels, open Settings and search for Battery Saver or Power. Older instructions may say Device → Power; the current Google path is System preferences → Power.
How to confirm it is active
When Battery Saver is running, the shelf battery icon displays a yellow + symbol. Opening Quick Settings shows a yellow bubble around the battery icon with the same plus sign. Quick Settings is useful for checking status, but Google’s current instructions do not promise a dedicated one-click Battery Saver switch on every Chromebook.

What Battery Saver changes
Battery Saver is a system-wide power mode. Google documents these changes:
- Display brightness is lowered.
- The keyboard backlight is turned off.
- The CPU is throttled, which can make demanding work feel slower.
- Chrome Energy Saver is enabled.
- Android Battery Saver is enabled while you use Android apps.
The exact runtime gain depends on the Chromebook, processor, display, workload, network activity, and apps. Google does not publish one battery-life increase that applies to every model.

When it is useful
Turn it on when you are away from a charger, near a low-battery state, or doing light work such as reading, writing, email, or ordinary browsing. You may prefer normal mode for games, demanding web applications, CPU-intensive Android or Linux software, or any task that requires maximum brightness, keyboard lighting, or responsiveness.
Why Battery Saver turns off
Connecting the Chromebook to power automatically turns Battery Saver off, and the setting is unavailable while charging. ChromeOS can also activate it automatically when the battery becomes low. Google’s consumer instructions do not specify one universal trigger percentage, so the threshold can vary by device or software configuration.

When automatic activation occurs, ChromeOS displays a notification with a Turn off control. You can also disable the feature through Settings → System preferences → Power.
How to turn Battery Saver off
- Open the system tray and select Settings.
- Go to System preferences → Power.
- Switch Battery Saver off.
If the automatic-activation notification is visible, selecting Turn off there also disables it. If the screen is dimmer, the keyboard light is off, or the Chromebook feels sluggish, those are expected effects of the mode; switching it off restores normal power behavior.

Battery Saver, Chrome Energy Saver, and Optimized charging

Battery Saver can turn Chrome Energy Saver on, but the two features are not the same. Chrome documents Energy Saver as a browser-level feature; details are available in Google’s Chrome announcement.
Optimized charging addresses battery longevity rather than surviving the next few hours. Depending on device support and administrator policy, ChromeOS may offer Adaptive charging, which keeps the battery around 80% for a period and predicts when a full charge is needed, or a Charge limit that caps charging at 80%. Google notes that optimized charging can sometimes prevent a full charge. See Google’s Optimized charging guide.

If Battery Saver is missing
- Unplug the charger and confirm the Chromebook is actually running on battery.
- In Settings, search for Battery Saver or Power.
- Check whether the Chromebook is managed by a school or employer. Administrators can restrict battery-saver controls.
- Install any available ChromeOS update and restart the Chromebook.
- If the option is still absent, contact the Chromebook manufacturer for device-specific support.
Do not rely on experimental chrome://flags entries as a normal fix; flags can change or disappear and are not required for the supported setting.
If it will not stay enabled
The documented cause is usually that the Chromebook has been connected to power. If it switches off while unplugged, a management policy may be controlling it. Google’s enterprise documentation describes battery-saver policy behavior for Chrome version 121 and later, but that administrator documentation should not be treated as a universal consumer threshold or interface rule: Chrome Enterprise policy reference.

- Lower the display brightness when full Battery Saver is unnecessary.
- Turn off keyboard lighting when you do not need it.
- Close unused intensive tabs, games, apps, and media streams.
- Use Chrome Energy Saver independently if you want browser-level savings without CPU and keyboard-backlight changes across the whole system.
- Use Optimized charging when your goal is long-term battery preservation rather than immediate runtime.
