How to Use ChromeOS on a Raspberry Pi: Install FydeOS for SBC

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can’t install official Google ChromeOS or ChromeOS Flex on a Raspberry Pi: ChromeOS Flex supports Intel and AMD x86-64 hardware, not the Pi’s ARM processors. The closest practical option is FydeOS for SBC, a separate ChromiumOS-based system with Raspberry Pi-specific images. Its current guide targets supported Pi 4/400 and Pi 5/500/500+ models with at least 4 GB of RAM. It can provide a Chromebook-like desktop, but it is not a Google-certified Chromebook or a full replacement for ChromeOS.

Can you install ChromeOS Flex on a Raspberry Pi?

No. Google’s ChromeOS Flex requirements specify compatible Intel or AMD x86-64 hardware and say ARM devices are unsupported. Raspberry Pi computers use ARM processors, so a ChromeOS Flex USB installer is not a route to installing Flex on a Pi.

It helps to separate four names that are often blurred together:

  • ChromeOS is Google’s operating system for certified Chromebooks and other ChromeOS devices.
  • ChromeOS Flex is Google’s installable edition for compatible Intel- and AMD-based PCs and Macs. It does not support every ChromeOS device feature; Google outlines differences in its ChromeOS Flex comparison.
  • ChromiumOS is the open-source project on which ChromeOS is based.
  • FydeOS and openFyde are independent ChromiumOS-derived projects. FydeOS offers Raspberry Pi-specific images.

So the accurate description is “a ChromiumOS-based ChromeOS alternative on Raspberry Pi,” not “Google ChromeOS on Raspberry Pi.”

  • 2 × USB 3. 0 ports, 2 x USB 2. 0 Ports
  • 2 × micro HDMI ports supproting up to 4Kp60 video resolution
  • Micro SD card slot for loading operating system and data storage

What should you install instead?

FydeOS for SBC: easiest starting point

For a ready-to-flash, Chromebook-like desktop, start with FydeOS for SBC. FydeOS publishes separate images for Pi 4/400 and the Pi 5 family, and its installation guide describes the SBC edition as designed for single-board computers. The guide requires at least 4 GB of RAM; a 2 GB-or-less configuration may fail to boot. Expect FydeOS features and updates, not Google’s ChromeOS services or update channel.

openFyde: for an open-project preference

openFyde is another ChromiumOS-derived route for people who value access to project sources and releases and are comfortable troubleshooting. Check its project release information for a current image that explicitly supports your exact Pi; do not assume every openFyde release is a drop-in substitute for FydeOS for SBC.

Chromium OS for Raspberry Pi: for builders and developers

Chromium OS for Raspberry Pi is the more developer-oriented option, particularly if you want to work from source. Its project documentation describes current targeting for Pi 4B, Pi 400, and Pi 5, while earlier Pi 3B/3B+ support was dropped in later releases. Treat Pi 3 builds as legacy or uncertain, not as a dependable current desktop choice.

When another device or OS is the better answer

  • Choose Raspberry Pi OS for GPIO, electronics, camera and Python projects, general Linux software, and the strongest official Pi support. Raspberry Pi describes it as its official operating system and recommends it for most uses; see the Raspberry Pi OS documentation.
  • Choose a certified Chromebook if you need official ChromeOS, Google Play support, verified boot, or a predictable Google update path. A Pi-based alternative does not promise those features.
  • Choose FydeOS when your goal is specifically to experiment with a browser-first, Chromebook-like desktop on supported Pi hardware.

Which Raspberry Pi models are supported?

FydeOS’s current SBC listings identify the following model families. Confirm the exact image and RAM requirement on the download and installation pages before flashing, since images and support can change.

Raspberry Pi Guidance
Pi 5, Pi 500, Pi 500+ Current target; use the dedicated Pi 5-family image. The current FydeOS guide requires at least 4 GB RAM.
Pi 4 Supported by FydeOS for SBC; use the Pi 4/400 image. At least 4 GB RAM is required by the current guide.
Pi 400 Supported; use the Pi 4/400 image.
Pi 4 with 2 GB RAM Not recommended for current FydeOS for SBC; the guide warns that 2 GB-or-less configurations may fail to boot.
Pi 3 / 3B+ Legacy or uncertain. Later Chromium OS for Raspberry Pi builds dropped earlier Pi 3 support.
Pi Zero / Zero 2 Not a realistic target for this desktop use case; current FydeOS SBC listings do not identify them as supported models.

Sources: FydeOS for SBC downloads, the Raspberry Pi installation guide, and the Chromium OS for Raspberry Pi project.

What you need before installing

  • A supported Pi with at least 4 GB of RAM for current FydeOS for SBC.
  • A microSD card or USB storage device suitable for the image and your intended use.
  • A power supply appropriate for your Pi model, plus an HDMI display, keyboard, and mouse.
  • A network connection for setup and browser use.
  • A separate computer to download the image and write it to the target storage.
  • A backup of anything on that storage device that you want to keep.

Flashing erases the selected storage device. Confirm the target drive carefully before starting. FydeOS recommends balenaEtcher or Rufus rather than Raspberry Pi Imager because Imager can sometimes interfere with FydeOS automatic storage expansion. The guide is at FydeOS’s Raspberry Pi installation page.

  • CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)

Download the image for your exact Pi

  1. Open the FydeOS for SBC download page.
  2. Choose the dedicated image for Pi 5 / Pi 500 / Pi 500+ or for Pi 4 / Pi 400. Do not substitute a PC, Intel/AMD, ChromeOS Flex, or other-SBC image, and do not swap Pi 4 and Pi 5 images unless FydeOS explicitly says they are compatible.
  3. Read the specific release page for its archive format, flashing notes, and checksum. Some downloads are compressed; follow that release’s instructions rather than guessing from the filename.
  4. If the page publishes a SHA-256 checksum, calculate SHA-256 for the downloaded archive and compare the full value. If it differs, delete the download and fetch it again instead of flashing it.

As a version-specific example, the FydeOS Pi 5-family download page listed version 22.1, dated May 22, 2026, platform 144-16503, architecture arm64, and SHA-256 c08323258f1c57197fbd597b1d4b4dddbdaf8c7f603e2542d7c3425d73b43d3f. That checksum applies only to that specific archive; verify the current release details on the Pi 5 / 500 / 500+ download page before use.

Flash FydeOS to a microSD card or USB drive

  1. Install balenaEtcher or, on Windows, Rufus.
  2. Extract the downloaded archive if the release instructions require it. For ZIP-based releases, use the raw image supplied inside as directed. FydeOS says a Pi 5 release may use a .bin extension for a raw disk image; it is not a PC ISO installer, and the extension may be cosmetic.
  3. In the flashing app, choose its image-selection command, such as Flash from file, then select the correct FydeOS image.
  4. Select the intended microSD card or USB drive as the target. Check the drive name and capacity: the next step overwrites it.
  5. Start the flash and wait for writing and validation to finish. Safely eject the drive when the tool reports completion.

If a tool rejects the raw image’s filename extension, follow the FydeOS release guidance; do not rename it to make it appear to be an ISO. See the Pi 5 image page and installation guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Boot the Pi and complete setup

  1. Shut down the Pi and insert the flashed microSD card or connect the flashed USB drive.
  2. Connect the display, keyboard, mouse, network, and the Pi’s appropriate power supply.
  3. Power on and allow the first boot to finish. It can take longer than later boots.
  4. Follow the on-screen setup to select language and keyboard, connect to a network, and configure an account. Review any privacy or diagnostic choices shown during setup.
  5. Once at the desktop, check for FydeOS system updates, install any offered update, and reboot if prompted.
  6. Test the functions you actually need: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, display resolution, browser playback, and any attached camera or other peripherals.

FydeOS says that from version 17, users can flash directly to the final boot drive and retain full functionality and OTA updates, without first installing to a separate microSD card. This describes FydeOS update behavior, not Google ChromeOS updates; check the Pi-specific release notes before relying on an upgrade path.

What works—and what may not

Browser and cloud apps

The natural use is web browsing: email, web apps, online office tools, and cloud-based productivity. Browser extensions and streaming may work, but performance depends on the Pi model, memory, storage, browser release, screen resolution, network, and the site. Do not assume the experience will match a Chromebook or that every streaming service will play smoothly.

Linux applications

Do not assume the full ChromeOS Linux development environment is available. FydeOS subsystem capabilities can vary with version, architecture, and hardware. A browser-based coding environment is different from a Linux container, and both are different from installing native Linux applications. Google also notes that Linux development-environment support can vary by model in its ChromeOS Flex feature comparison; that information does not guarantee support on FydeOS.

Android apps and Google Play

Google Play is not included by default according to FydeOS documentation. Android application support and Google Play availability are version- and hardware-dependent, so treat any Google services installation as an optional experiment, not a standard feature. FydeOS’s Google Play instructions warn that manual setup can require Developer Mode and disabling root filesystem verification, which reduces security; Google authorization may also be required for Play-distributed apps. Follow only instructions that match your exact FydeOS release, and do not disable security verification casually.

  • 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz IEEE 802.11ac wireless, Bluetooth 5.0, BLE Gigabit Ethernet
  • 2 USB 3.0 ports; 2 USB 2.0 ports.
  • Raspberry Pi standard 40 pin GPIO header (fully backwards compatible with previous boards)

Updates, security, and peripherals

FydeOS may provide OTA updates when installed in a supported way, but these are FydeOS updates, not Google’s ChromeOS update channel. Keep local files backed up and check the device-specific release notes before updating. No claim of Chromebook-equivalent security is warranted: Google describes security differences between ChromeOS Flex and certified ChromeOS devices in its comparison, and FydeOS is a separate third-party system. Display, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, camera, and other peripheral support can vary by board, release, and device.

Troubleshoot common problems

The Pi does not boot or there is no display

  1. Check that the image is for the exact Pi model family and that the board meets the documented RAM requirement.
  2. If a checksum is available, verify the download again, then reflash the storage device.
  3. Try another storage device, HDMI cable or adapter, and display; check that the power supply is appropriate and stable.
  4. Allow time for first boot before concluding that it has stalled.
  5. Test the Pi with Raspberry Pi OS. If that also fails, investigate the Pi, power, display, or storage separately from FydeOS.

The system boots but reports the wrong storage capacity

FydeOS warns that Raspberry Pi Imager can interfere with automatic storage expansion. Reflash with balenaEtcher or Rufus and check whether the current release has a first-boot expansion step in its instructions.

The image will not flash

  • Extract the archive if the release requires it; otherwise use the raw image as the release page directs.
  • On Windows, try Rufus if another tool rejects the file.
  • If the correct raw image has a .bin extension, consult the release instructions about using it or renaming it to .img.
  • Confirm that the selected target is the intended removable drive, since flashing erases it.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, or a camera is missing

Check the release notes and test a practical USB peripheral where possible. Support depends on the board and device, and a USB fallback is not guaranteed either.

Google Play setup fails

The instructions may not match the installed version, the hardware may not be supported, or Google services may have changed. Because some procedures weaken system protection, the safer recovery is to undo the change or reflash the official FydeOS image rather than continue disabling safeguards.

Performance is poor

  • Use a Pi 5-family board and at least 4 GB RAM where available.
  • Use reliable, fast storage and test with a wired network to separate network problems from system performance.
  • Reduce screen resolution, close tabs, and avoid several demanding web apps at once.
  • Check the performance of the same Pi under Raspberry Pi OS if you need to distinguish general hardware limits from FydeOS-specific issues.

Is FydeOS better than Raspberry Pi OS?

Neither is a universal winner. FydeOS is the more relevant choice when you want to explore a ChromiumOS-style interface and mostly use browser-based services. Raspberry Pi OS is the more practical default for programming, electronics, GPIO, local Linux applications, and Raspberry Pi community support. If what you actually need is Google-certified ChromeOS with reliable Play Store support and a supported Google update path, a Chromebook is the more suitable device.
