This standard Wi-Fi method works with Android phones and iPhones. Some compatible Android phones also support Google’s password-free Instant Tethering.
What you need before connecting
- A phone with mobile data enabled and a usable cellular signal.
- A carrier plan that allows hotspot use. Restrictions or additional charges may apply, so check your plan if you are unsure.
- A Chromebook with Wi-Fi enabled, plus the hotspot’s network name and password.
- Enough phone battery for the session. Tethering can use power quickly; keep the phone plugged in for extended use.
Google’s Chromebook hotspot instructions warn that tethering can increase battery use and may incur carrier charges. Apple also says Personal Hotspot availability and the number of connected devices can depend on the carrier and iPhone model (Apple Support).
Connect the Chromebook to a regular Wi-Fi hotspot
- Turn on the hotspot on your phone using the Android or iPhone instructions below.
- On the Chromebook, select the time in the lower-right corner.
- Open the Wi-Fi or network control and make sure Wi-Fi is on.
- Select your phone’s hotspot name from the available networks.
- Enter the hotspot password and select Connect.
- Wait for the Chromebook to show that it is connected, then open a web page to check that internet access works.
This is a Wi-Fi connection: you do not normally need to pair the Chromebook and phone over Bluetooth. Bluetooth is relevant to Android’s optional Instant Tethering feature, not the standard hotspot method.

Android settings vary by phone maker and software version, so there is no single menu path that applies to every model.

- Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, then tap Hotspot or Mobile Hotspot. If you do not see a hotspot tile, open Settings and search for “hotspot,” “tethering,” or “mobile hotspot.”
- Open the hotspot settings to check the network name and password. If the phone offers a choice of Wi-Fi band, 2.4 GHz generally favors range and compatibility, while 5 GHz may work better at close range; the best choice depends on the devices and surroundings.
- Check whether a data limit, timeout, or automatic shutdown is enabled if the hotspot turns off unexpectedly.
- Return to the Chromebook’s Wi-Fi menu and join the network using the steps above.
If the phone’s hotspot option is missing or blocked, the carrier may not support tethering on your plan. Check with the carrier before assuming a Chromebook setting is at fault.
Turn on Personal Hotspot on an iPhone
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot. On some iOS versions, the path is Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
- Turn on Allow Others to Join and note the Wi-Fi password shown on that screen.
- On the Chromebook, open the Wi-Fi menu, select the iPhone’s name, enter that password, and connect. If the network does not appear, keep the Personal Hotspot screen open while you try again.
Apple specifies that an iPhone hotspot password must be at least eight characters and recommends ASCII characters such as letters, numbers, and common punctuation. If a Chromebook cannot see or join the hotspot, turn on Maximize Compatibility in Personal Hotspot settings and retry. See Apple’s Personal Hotspot instructions for the current details.

Use Instant Tethering with a compatible Android phone
Instant Tethering can make an Android phone’s connection available from ChromeOS without manually selecting the Wi-Fi network and entering its password. It is an optional convenience feature, not a requirement for hotspot use.
Google lists ChromeOS 71 or later and Android 8.1 or later for this workflow, along with compatible devices. Both devices must use the same Google Account, and Bluetooth should be enabled. Carrier restrictions can still prevent or limit tethering.

- On the Chromebook, select the time, then open Settings > Connected devices.
- Select the Android phone and choose Instant tethering.
- Enter the Chromebook password if prompted, then follow the on-screen directions and approve the connection on the phone.
You may also see the phone listed under Your device hotspots in the Chromebook’s Wi-Fi menu. If Instant Tethering is unavailable, use the regular Wi-Fi hotspot method instead. Compatibility, account setup, carrier support, or an organization’s device policy can affect availability. Google describes the feature and requirements in its phone-network guide; its connected-device guidance notes that work- or school-managed Chromebooks may have restrictions.
Troubleshoot common hotspot problems
| What happens | What to check and try |
|---|---|
| Hotspot does not appear | Confirm mobile data works on the phone and the hotspot is on. Move the phone closer. On an iPhone, keep the Personal Hotspot screen open and try Maximize Compatibility. For Instant Tethering, check Bluetooth and try turning it off and on again. Toggle Chromebook Wi-Fi, then restart both devices if needed. |
| Password is rejected | Read the current password in the phone’s hotspot settings; it is not the phone’s screen-lock password. On the Chromebook, forget the saved network and reconnect. Make sure you selected the correct phone if nearby hotspot names are similar. For iPhone, try a password using ordinary ASCII letters, numbers, and punctuation. |
| Connected, but no internet | Test a web page on the phone itself. The Chromebook can be connected to the phone’s Wi-Fi even when the phone has no cellular internet. Check signal, mobile-data status, carrier account and hotspot allowance; restart both devices and try again. If the phone cannot get online, the Chromebook cannot get internet through it. |
| Connection is slow or drops | Move the phone to a spot with better cellular reception, keep it plugged in, disconnect unused devices, and pause large downloads or streaming. If available, try a different Wi-Fi band: 2.4 GHz may help with range or compatibility; 5 GHz may be useful nearby. Actual speeds depend on signal, congestion, hardware, plan limits, and carrier throttling. |
| Instant Tethering is missing | Use the standard hotspot method. For Instant Tethering, verify device compatibility, the same Google Account, Bluetooth, and software requirements. A school or employer may restrict connected-device features; contact the administrator if the Chromebook is managed. |
Apple also recommends updating and restarting the iPhone and connected device when Personal Hotspot is not working (Apple Support). For broader ChromeOS network diagnostics, see Google’s connection troubleshooting guide.

Protect your data and battery, then disconnect
Hotspot traffic uses the phone’s cellular connection, so video, video calls, downloads, and system updates can consume data. Keep your hotspot password private, especially on a capped or metered plan. When finished, turn off Hotspot or Mobile Hotspot on Android, or switch off Allow Others to Join on iPhone. You can also connect the Chromebook to another Wi-Fi network. Shutting down the hotspot avoids unnecessary battery and data use; Google recommends disconnecting the phone’s data connection when finished and plugging it in during extended use.

How hotspotting differs from other connection options
- Instant Tethering: An Android-and-ChromeOS convenience feature with compatibility, account, and Bluetooth requirements; it is not the same as pairing for ordinary Wi-Fi access.
- Bluetooth tethering: A separate option that is generally slower and more involved than joining a Wi-Fi hotspot, so it is not the default recommendation here.
- USB tethering: Support varies by phone and Chromebook, so do not assume a cable will provide internet. Wi-Fi is the more transferable method for Android and iPhone.
- Dedicated mobile hotspot: May suit frequent travel, long sessions, or several devices, but requires separate hardware and a data plan.
- Chromebook with built-in cellular: Some models have their own mobile-data hardware and service. That is different from connecting to a phone’s hotspot, and not all Chromebooks support it; see Google’s mobile-data network guide.
- Chromebook as a hotspot: This is the reverse scenario—using a cellular-capable Chromebook to share its connection. Google documents it separately in Use your Chromebook as a Wi-Fi hotspot.
