Start with the data path, not a factory reset: unlock the iPhone, use a known-good cable that supports charging and data, connect directly to the Mac, approve every Allow and Trust prompt, then restart and update both devices. This sequence resolves many intermittent Finder, backup and sync failures without risking your data.
Identify what is actually disconnecting
“Disconnecting” can describe several different failures. The symptom determines the most useful test.

Five-minute wired-connection fix
- Keep the iPhone unlocked and on its Home Screen.
- Disconnect the cable at both ends and inspect it for fraying, bent plugs or looseness. Use a cable that carries both data and power; a charge-only cable cannot sync.
- Remove visible lint from the iPhone port carefully. Do not force metal tools into the connector.
- Connect the phone directly to the Mac, not through a hub, dock, monitor, keyboard or adapter, and try another Mac port.
- Watch both screens. On the Mac, click Allow if “Allow accessory to connect?” appears. On the iPhone, enter the passcode and tap Trust when “Trust This Computer?” appears.
- Open Finder and look under Locations for the iPhone.
- Restart the iPhone and Mac, install available iOS and macOS updates, then repeat the direct connection.

Use the correct Mac interface
On macOS Catalina and later, manage an iPhone in Finder rather than iTunes. In Finder, choose View > Show Sidebar, then look under Locations. If the sidebar is visible but the phone is still missing, continue with the connection and trust tests. Apple documents the current Finder arrangement at How to sync your iPhone or iPad with your Mac. Older macOS releases may use iTunes; Windows uses Apple Devices or iTunes.

Test the cable, ports and accessories systematically
Repeatedly reconnecting the same setup does not isolate the fault. Change one variable at a time:
- Different known-good data cable: If the problem disappears, the original cable is suspect.
- Different Mac port: A working connection here points toward the original port, adapter or accessory.
- Direct connection: If bypassing a dock or hub helps, investigate that intermediary rather than the iPhone.
- Another Mac with the same iPhone and cable: Failure everywhere makes the phone, cable or phone port more likely.
- Another iPhone on the same Mac and cable: If it works, focus on the original iPhone.
These are isolation tests, not definitive hardware diagnoses. Charging alone does not prove that the cable’s data lines or the iPhone port work. Apple recommends trying another data cable, USB port or Mac and checking the port for debris: support.apple.com/en-us/108643.
Repair trust authorization
A Mac cannot access device data, sync content or make a local backup until the iPhone trusts it.

- Connect the iPhone and unlock it with the passcode.
- Select it in Finder and click Trust if prompted.
- Tap Trust on the iPhone and enter its passcode if requested.
If the prompt never appears, or you previously tapped Don’t Trust, reset only the trust record: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. Apple identifies VPNs and third-party security software as possible factors when a Mac does not recognize an iPhone. Temporarily disconnect from a VPN or pause a third-party network filter for one controlled test, then re-enable protection. Do not permanently uninstall security software based on a single result.
Also remove docks, hubs, displays and adapters from the test. An intermediary can introduce power, bandwidth or compatibility problems even when the iPhone and cable are healthy. Enterprise-managed Macs or iPhones may impose restrictions that ordinary troubleshooting cannot override.

Protect your backup and synced content
A connection drop during a backup is not a successful backup. Do not unplug during a backup, restore, update or active sync; check Finder’s backup status before relying on it. If USB remains unreliable, use iCloud Backup while the iPhone has Wi‑Fi access and enough iCloud storage.
If Finder warns that the iPhone was synced with another library, do not casually choose Erase and Sync. Apple says an iPhone can sync with only one Apple Music or Apple TV library at a time; that option can erase selected synced content and replace it with content from the current Mac. Read Apple’s explanation at support.apple.com/en-lamr/102471. Do not begin a restore merely to refresh an unstable connection, and never erase the iPhone as a routine first step.

- Connect the iPhone to the Mac by USB.
- In Finder, select the iPhone under Locations, open General, select Show this iPhone when on Wi‑Fi, and click Apply.
- Put both devices on the same Wi‑Fi network, then eject the iPhone before unplugging the cable.
The devices must be on the same local network, not merely connected to the internet. Guest-network isolation or a VPN can prevent discovery. Wi‑Fi syncing is slower than USB; if the cable is unplugged during an active sync, that sync stops and resumes only after a suitable reconnection. Apple’s setup and limitations are at support.apple.com/en-nz/guide/mac-help/mchlada1d602/mac. Apple’s guide states that Wi‑Fi syncing supports iOS 5 or later and iPadOS 13 or later.

Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider when multiple known-good data cables, direct Mac ports and another Mac produce the same failure; the connector is visibly damaged or loose; the phone disconnects during charging as well as data transfer; or the problem follows liquid exposure or a drop. A Mac that also loses other USB devices may need Mac-side service instead.
Apple offers in-person and mail-in options at support.apple.com/iphone/repair. Final out-of-warranty pricing can require inspection and varies by model, location and provider.

Should you buy a cable?
Buy a replacement only when the isolation test points toward the cable. Apple’s U.S. store listed its USB‑C to Lightning cable at $19 for 1 m and $29 for 2 m in August 2026; prices and availability can change. See the live listings for the 1 m cable and 2 m cable. A compatible, data-capable cable is the requirement; an Apple-branded cable is not automatically a cure for a damaged port, Mac or hub.
An Apple USB‑C to Lightning Adapter is primarily intended for connecting Lightning accessories to a USB‑C iPhone or iPad, not as the normal first choice for connecting a Lightning iPhone to a USB‑C Mac. A correctly matched data cable is simpler; see Apple’s adapter listing.
