The right fix depends on whether the keyboard is absent, hidden by an accessory, displayed in an unusual layout, limited to one app, or visible but not accepting touches.
First, find out whether the problem affects the whole iPad
Open Notes, create a note, and tap in the note body. You should see an insertion point and the onscreen keyboard in a supported text-entry field. Type a few characters.
- Keyboard works in Notes: the original app, website, form, or text field is the likely source.
- It fails in Notes too: continue with the accessory, layout, system, and configuration checks below.
- An insertion point appears but no keyboard: check external-keyboard routing first.
A webpage field can be disabled, read-only, covered by another element, or waiting for sign-in, consent, or validation. Apple describes the normal text-field behavior in its onscreen keyboard guide.
Show the onscreen keyboard when a physical keyboard is connected
Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard, keyboard folio, and Bluetooth keyboards can handle typing without displaying the software keyboard. That can look like a missing keyboard even when iPadOS is working normally.

- Tap an editable text field.
- Tap the Keyboard Shortcut button in the Shortcuts bar at the bottom of the screen, or tap the language button beside predictive text when that control is shown.
- Tap Show Keyboard.
This is Apple’s documented method; the exact button can vary with iPad model, language, accessory, and iPadOS release. See Apple’s external-keyboard instructions. As a diagnostic, disconnect the keyboard case or turn off and disconnect the Bluetooth keyboard, then test Notes again. If the onscreen keyboard returns, the issue was routing behavior rather than a dead software keyboard.
Fix a floating, split, or undocked keyboard
Floating keyboard is tiny
The floating keyboard is an intentional one-handed typing mode. Place two fingers on it and spread them apart to return to full size. You can also tap More and choose Full. Apple documents both methods at Restore a small or split keyboard.
Split keyboard is in two halves
Touch and hold the keyboard button in the lower-right corner, slide to Merge or Dock and Merge, and release. Apple’s current support page says split-keyboard support is limited to iPad mini and iPad (9th generation and earlier), so do not expect a Split option on every modern iPad.
Keyboard is in the middle of the screen
An undocked keyboard can be moved. Tap in a text field, touch and hold the Hide Keyboard key, slide to Dock, and release. Depending on the model and current state, the same menu may offer Floating, Split, or Merge. Labels and availability can differ by iPadOS version; Apple’s layout guide is here.

Restart and update iPadOS
- Save work, then restart the iPad normally.
- Open Notes and test typing.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install an available update if appropriate.
- Test the affected app again.
Apple recommends checking for iPadOS updates and restarting when a compatible keyboard accessory does not respond. An update is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that a particular release fixes every keyboard symptom.
If only one app or website is affected
- Tap a different text field in the same app.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Update it through the App Store.
- For a website, reload the page and try another browser or another site.
- Check that the field is editable and not blocked by a sign-in, consent dialog, validation error, or overlay.
If Notes, Messages, Mail, or Safari’s address bar accept text normally, treat the failure as app- or site-specific rather than as proof of an iPad-wide keyboard fault.
Check keyboard and accessibility settings
Language and hardware keyboards
Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and confirm that the expected language keyboard is installed. Remove and re-add a problematic third-party layout if necessary, then switch with the globe or keyboard-switch key. With a physical keyboard connected, review Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard. Apple’s language-keyboard instructions are at this guide, and hardware options are described here.
Missing predictive suggestions is not the same as a missing keyboard. Predictive text is an optional area above the keys; its settings are covered by Apple’s predictive-text guide.

Accessibility features
Review Settings > Accessibility > Keyboards and, where available, Settings > Accessibility > Keyboards & Typing > Full Keyboard Access. Options such as Show Lowercase Keys, Key Repeat, Sticky Keys, and Slow Keys change input behavior but do not automatically explain every absent keyboard. Relevant Apple documentation is available for keyboard accessibility and Full Keyboard Access.
If VoiceOver is enabled, interaction changes: select a text field and double-tap to place the insertion point and bring up the onscreen keyboard. See Apple’s VoiceOver keyboard guidance.
Fix Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard connection problems
Use these steps when the physical accessory itself is not responding:
- Confirm the iPad and keyboard model are compatible.
- Disconnect the accessory and remove any case or cover that could interfere.
- Clean the Smart Connector with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Reconnect the keyboard securely.
- Restart the iPad if it still does not respond.
Apple’s accessory troubleshooting page, updated April 6, 2026, recommends these checks: Magic Keyboard and Smart Keyboard troubleshooting. Smart Connector keyboards do not use the same pairing path as Bluetooth keyboards, so do not assume removing a Bluetooth device will address a connector problem.

Contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider when the keyboard fails in Notes and several other apps after restarting and updating, or when:

- the lower part of the touchscreen consistently ignores taps;
- keys appear but never accept touch input across apps;
- the accessory remains unresponsive after cleaning and reconnection;
- the problem began after liquid exposure, a drop, screen repair, or display replacement; or
- the failure returns immediately after every restart.
Back up the iPad before service. Do not erase all content or perform a factory reset as an early keyboard fix.

While troubleshooting, you can use Dictation, Apple Pencil text entry where supported, or an external Bluetooth keyboard. A Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard, or compatible folio can also provide reliable physical typing, but buying one will not repair a missing onscreen keyboard and compatibility must be checked for your exact iPad model. How do I make the small keyboard normal size?
Spread two fingers apart on the floating keyboard, or choose More > Full.

Should I reset the keyboard dictionary?
Not as a first step. The documented sequence is to test another field, restore the layout, check accessory routing, restart, update, and then investigate the app or hardware.
