If Shared Albums are missing from your iPhone, first check that the feature is enabled and that you are signed in to the Apple Account the album was shared with. Then look for an unaccepted invitation and confirm with the owner that the album still exists and you still have access. The right fix depends on whether the Shared Albums section, one album, an invitation, or new content is missing.
Identify what is missing

Also check that you are looking for the right Apple feature. Shared Albums are invitation-based albums for photos, videos, comments, and likes. Shared content is a copy, may be reduced in resolution, and does not count against the owner’s iCloud storage. An album can hold up to 5,000 photos and videos.
iCloud Shared Photo Library is different: it integrates content into a separate shared library and requires iOS 16.1 or later and iCloud Photos. It can include its creator and up to five other people. If the missing photos belong to that library, check whether Photos is showing Personal Library, Shared Library, or Both Libraries rather than following Shared Album troubleshooting.
Turn on Shared Albums and find the section in Photos
- Update iOS to the latest version available for your iPhone, and confirm you are signed in to the Apple Account you use for Photos.
- On current iOS versions, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos. Under Saved to iCloud, turn on Shared Albums. On iOS 17 or earlier, go to Settings > Photos and turn on Shared Albums. Apple’s setup guidance is at How to use Shared Albums in Photos.
- Open Photos. On iOS 26 or later, tap Collections and scroll to Shared Albums. On iOS 18, scroll to the Shared Albums section in Photos. Older versions use the Albums tab.
If the setting is enabled but the section still does not appear, continue with the invitation and account checks below. Menu labels can vary by iOS version.

Find and accept a missing invitation
Apple lists three places where a Shared Album invitation may appear. Availability of some features can vary by country or region.
Notification Center
From the Lock Screen, swipe up from the middle. From another screen, swipe down from the center of the top edge. Tap the invitation and then tap Accept.
Photos
On iOS 26, open Photos and tap Collections; open the invitation if it appears. You can also scroll to Shared Albums, tap Activity, and look for Accept.

iCloud.com/photos
- Open iCloud Photos in a browser and sign in to the Apple Account that should receive the invitation.
- Select Shared Albums, find the invitation, and accept it.

Confirm the invitation address and ask the owner to resend it
Ask the owner which email address or phone number they invited. Search the relevant email account for the sender’s name or album name, and check whether you accidentally declined the invitation. An invite sent to a different address may not show up under the account you are checking.
The owner—not a subscriber—can resend access. On iOS 26 or later, the owner can open Photos > Collections > Shared Albums, open the album, tap More, tap the album name, select the subscriber, and tap Resend Invitation. If the person was removed, the owner should choose Invite People instead.

On iOS 18 or earlier, the owner opens Photos and the Shared Albums section, then the album. They can tap More and the album name to select the person and choose Resend Invitation. On iOS 17 or earlier, use the Albums tab and the album’s People screen. Apple’s version-specific steps are in If Shared Albums aren’t working.
If you previously chose to stop receiving Shared Album emails, Apple documents a recovery route: open an old invitation email and choose Undo this change. If you no longer have an old invitation, Apple says to contact Apple Support.

Make sure the iPhone and any other Apple devices you are checking use the same Apple Account intended for the album. Test the internet connection by opening Apple.com or iCloud.com, and check whether the album is available on another device or to another subscriber. These comparisons help narrow down the cause:

- Other subscribers can see it, but you cannot: focus on your Apple Account, invitation, iPhone setting, or local Photos sync.
- It appears on iCloud.com/photos but not on the iPhone: focus on the iPhone’s Shared Albums setting and sync.
- Nobody can see it: ask the owner to check the album, subscribers, and whether sharing was stopped. A service issue is also possible.
If you see a message that the album is no longer shared, ask the owner whether it was deleted or whether you were removed, then request a new invitation if appropriate. Deleting a Shared Album removes it from the creator’s and subscribers’ devices and permanently deletes its contents from that album. Photos you saved to your personal library beforehand remain there. Shared Album contents are not automatically backed up, so save important items you want to keep.

If the account, invitation, and access are correct but the iPhone still will not sync, Apple recommends toggling Shared Albums off and back on. Save or back up important Shared Album photos and videos first.
- On current iOS versions, open Settings > Apps > Photos. On iOS 17 or earlier, open Settings > Photos.
- Turn off Shared Albums.
- Wait 10 minutes, then turn Shared Albums back on.
This is a sync troubleshooting step, not a way to recover an album the owner deleted or access the owner revoked. See Apple’s full guidance at If Shared Albums aren’t working.

If the album opens but does not update or accept your posts
Check the connection and service status
Try another network or confirm that other Apple services load. Check Apple’s System Status page for a Photos or iCloud service issue; one missing album on one device does not by itself establish an outage.
Check the album limit
Shared Albums can hold up to 5,000 photos and videos. If the album has reached that limit, the owner will need to remove items before adding more. The limit explains why new items cannot be added; it does not by itself explain a missing album.
Check posting permission
If you can view the album but cannot contribute, the owner may have disabled posting. On iOS 18 or later, the owner can open the album, tap More, tap the album name, and check Participants Can Add Photos. On iOS 17 or earlier, check Subscribers Can Post in the album’s details or People screen.
Know what quality Shared Albums preserve
Shared Albums are for sharing, not keeping full-resolution originals. Apple says shared photos may be reduced to 2,048 pixels on the long edge (panoramas can be up to 5,400 pixels wide), and videos can be up to 15 minutes and delivered at up to 720p. Save originals in your personal Photos library or use another file-sharing method when original quality matters. Apple’s limits are described in its troubleshooting guidance.

When the owner or Apple Support needs to help
A local iPhone setting cannot restore a deleted album or grant access that the owner removed. If the album is still available to other people, have its owner verify your subscriber status and send a fresh invitation. If it is unavailable to everyone, ask the owner to confirm it was not deleted. If the album and invitation remain unavailable after the account, settings, connection, and reset checks—or Apple’s invitation system is not working—contact Apple Support.
An owner can also enable a Public Website for a Shared Album, creating an iCloud link that people without iCloud can use. This is less private than invitation-only access because anyone with the link can view it; the owner should share it accordingly.
