How to Fix a Black Screen on YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A black YouTube screen has several possible causes. If audio plays while the picture is black, start with extensions, hardware acceleration, graphics drivers, and external-display connections. If the player is stuck loading, test your connection, lower the quality, restart YouTube, and try another device. If the entire page is blank, test a private window, clear YouTube site data, and check for a wider service problem.

Use the symptom-based steps below, starting with the least disruptive test.

Quick fixes for any device

  1. Refresh the YouTube page, or close and reopen the app.
  2. Play a different, unrelated video.
  3. Restart the phone, computer, TV, console, or streaming stick.
  4. Open another website or streaming service to test the connection.
  5. Try YouTube in a private or Incognito window.
  6. Test another browser, device, or network (such as cellular data instead of Wi-Fi).
  7. Install available browser, YouTube app, and device-system updates.

YouTube recommends these steps for temporary playback and loading failures: general playback troubleshooting and device and app troubleshooting.

Fix YouTube on Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, or Brave

1. Test a private window

Open YouTube in Chrome or Edge Incognito, Firefox Private Browsing, or Safari Private Browsing. If playback works there, an extension, stale site data, or a browser-profile setting is likely involved.

2. Isolate extensions

  1. Open the browser’s extensions or add-ons page.
  2. Temporarily disable extensions, beginning with ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, downloaders, and video-enhancement tools.
  3. Reload YouTube and test a video.
  4. Re-enable extensions one at a time until the conflict returns.

YouTube identifies extensions, including ad blockers, as possible playback conflicts. Disabling one changes your privacy, security, or ad-filtering settings, so update, reconfigure, or replace the conflicting extension rather than leaving every protection disabled.

3. Clear YouTube site data

Clear cookies and cached data for YouTube from your browser’s site-settings panel instead of deleting all browsing history. This can remove stale sessions, but it may sign you out, erase site preferences, and make the next load slower while fresh data is created. YouTube recommends clearing cache and cookies for playback errors.

4. Update the browser

Install the latest version offered by your browser. YouTube lists Chrome, Firefox, and Safari as examples of supported browsers and recommends keeping them current: YouTube’s playback guidance. Menu names and locations vary by browser version.

5. Toggle hardware acceleration

This is especially useful when audio plays but the video remains black. In Chromium-based browsers, look under Settings → System for Use graphics acceleration when available (the wording can vary). Turn it off, relaunch the browser, and test YouTube. If playback or performance worsens, turn it back on. Hardware acceleration normally improves efficiency; treat this as a diagnostic test, not a permanent rule. YouTube recommends this type of test for player-rendering problems: hardware-acceleration guidance.

6. Update graphics and system software

Install graphics-driver updates from your computer or graphics-chip manufacturer’s official support site, never from a random driver-updater service. On a Mac, install available macOS updates because graphics fixes are delivered through the operating system. YouTube recommends updating the graphics driver for rendering failures.

7. Remove display-chain variables

If you use multiple monitors, a USB-C dock, DisplayLink, an HDMI splitter, capture hardware, an adapter, a projector, or an external TV:

These are diagnostic possibilities, not proof that a particular cable, HDCP path, or monitor is defective.

Fix the YouTube app on Android

  1. Close and reopen YouTube, then restart the phone or tablet.
  2. Update YouTube in Google Play and install Android system updates.
  3. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If mobile data works, restart the router and check congestion or interference.
  4. Clear the app cache: Settings → Apps (or Applications) → YouTube → Storage → Clear cache. Labels differ by manufacturer and Android version.
  5. If necessary, reinstall YouTube or use the app’s reset options. Clearing storage/data is more disruptive than clearing cache and may reset local settings.

YouTube documents these Android steps at its Android troubleshooting page. Lowering video quality can help a congested connection, but it will not repair a genuine rendering failure.

Fix YouTube on an iPhone or iPad

  1. Force-close YouTube and reopen it.
  2. Restart the iPhone or iPad.
  3. Update YouTube in the App Store and install the latest iOS or iPadOS update.
  4. Test Wi-Fi and cellular data separately.
  5. Open YouTube in Safari to determine whether the fault is limited to the app.
  6. Delete and reinstall YouTube if the problem continues.

iOS does not provide the same universal “Clear cache” control as Android, so do not follow Android cache instructions on an iPhone or iPad.

Fix YouTube on a smart TV, streaming stick, or game console

  1. Exit and reopen the YouTube app.
  2. Restart the TV or device.
  3. Unplug its power for at least 30 seconds, reconnect it, and try again.
  4. Update the YouTube app and the TV, console, or streaming device firmware.
  5. Sign out of YouTube and sign back in.
  6. If other streaming apps also fail, restart the router.
  7. Compare the same video on a phone or computer, or test casting and direct HDMI from another device.

YouTube recommends power-cycling, updates, account reauthentication, and alternate playback methods at support.google.com/youtube/answer/3037019 and support.google.com/youtube/answer/10232409.

Read the TV symptoms

  • Only YouTube is black: suspect app data, an app update, an account session, or local compatibility.
  • Every streaming app is black: investigate the TV, HDMI chain, firmware, display settings, or network.
  • The TV menu is also black: this is primarily a TV, input, cable, or panel problem, not a YouTube-player problem.
  • Casting works but the built-in app does not: the TV app or firmware is the likely local fault.
  • The built-in app works but HDMI playback is black: test the cable, adapter, display mode, and connection path.

If audio plays but the video is black

The player has loaded sound while video rendering is failing. Prioritize, in order, extension conflicts, a private-window test, hardware-acceleration toggling, browser and graphics-driver updates, and disconnecting external displays or docks. YouTube’s rendering guidance supports the acceleration and driver tests; display hardware is an additional variable to isolate rather than a guaranteed cause.

If the player is black with a loading spinner

480p SD 1.1 Mbps
360p SD 0.7 Mbps

For HD streaming on a TV, YouTube states that at least 7 Mbps is recommended. These are approximate recommendations, not guarantees: interference, congestion, packet loss, VPN routing, latency, and other active devices can still interrupt playback. If only one video is black

Play several unrelated videos before changing device settings. A single title may have an availability, age, account-access, licensing, or temporary delivery problem. If every other video works, avoid resetting the browser, app, or TV; note any specific error message and check the video’s availability while signed in.

How to tell whether YouTube is down

  1. Confirm that unrelated websites work.
  2. Try YouTube on another device.
  3. Try a different network.
  4. Play several unrelated videos.
  5. Check official YouTube communications and widespread reports.

Do not label the problem an outage from one black screen. YouTube says temporary service interruptions can require reloading or trying again later. Managed workplaces, schools, hotels, and internet providers may also restrict YouTube or alter access; see YouTube’s network-access guidance.

When to contact support

  • The issue remains after testing another device and network.
  • All streaming services fail, or the TV/monitor menu is also black.
  • The failure began after a system, driver, dock, cable, or display change.
  • You see an account, licensing, age, or access error.
  • You are using a managed network that may block YouTube.

Use official YouTube Help at support.google.com/youtube/, your browser’s support channel, or the device manufacturer’s support. Avoid fake support numbers, paid “YouTube repair” services, and unverified driver-updater software.

Final troubleshooting checklist

  • Refresh or reopen YouTube.
  • Try another video.
  • Restart the device.
  • Test a private window or another browser.
  • Disable extensions selectively.
  • Clear YouTube site data or Android app cache.
  • Update the browser, app, system, and graphics software.
  • Toggle hardware acceleration and restore it if performance worsens.
  • Test another network, device, display, cable, or casting method.
  • Escalate when the evidence points to the TV, display chain, managed network, or a wider service problem.
