1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUnrealCEFSubProcess.exe can be a legitimate VALORANT component when it runs from your game’s installation folder. The filename alone does not prove that every copy is safe. In Task Manager, use Open file location, verify the digital signature, and scan the file before deciding what to do. Do not delete it simply because it appears in the process list.
What UnrealCEFSubProcess.exe is
The executable is a supporting process bundled with VALORANT’s Unreal Engine files. A typical installation contains it at a path such as C:Riot GamesVALORANTliveEngineBinariesWin64UnrealCEFSubProcess.exe, although your drive or installation folder may differ.
The CEF-style name suggests a Chromium Embedded Framework subprocess used for embedded web-style interfaces. Riot does not publicly document the exact visible tasks performed by this specific executable, so descriptions such as store, login, or other web-backed interface work should be treated as technical inference rather than a Riot specification.
It is distinct from the other processes involved in starting the game:

VALORANT.exeandVALORANT-Win64-Shipping.exeare the game processes.RiotClientServices.exebelongs to the Riot Client.- Riot Vanguard is the separate anti-cheat system, consisting of a client, driver, and platform. VALORANT will not run without Vanguard. See Riot’s Vanguard explanation.
Therefore, UnrealCEFSubProcess.exe should not be identified as Vanguard or as the anti-cheat driver.
How to tell whether your copy is legitimate
1. Check its actual location
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Open the Details tab and locate
UnrealCEFSubProcess.exe. - Right-click it and select Open file location.
- Confirm that it is inside the VALORANT installation, normally beneath
VALORANTliveEngineBinariesWin64.
A file in %AppData%, %Temp%, Documents, a random folder, or an unrelated game directory deserves investigation. A custom drive or non-default Riot folder is not suspicious by itself; compare the location with the installation you actually use.
2. Inspect the signature and metadata
Right-click the file in File Explorer, choose Properties, and review Digital Signatures, Details, file size, and modification date. An absent signature, an unexpected signer, or a file that appears when Riot software is completely closed are warning signs, not automatic proof of malware.
3. Scan the individual file
In File Explorer, right-click the executable and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender. Microsoft also documents full and Microsoft Defender Offline scans in its Windows Security guidance and virus-and-threat-protection documentation. If Defender or another trusted security product detects it, quarantine it and follow that product’s remediation instructions rather than downloading a replacement executable.

Why it stays open or appears multiple times
One or more instances do not automatically indicate malware. Embedded interface components may use child processes, but Riot does not publish a rule saying how many instances are always normal. Common explanations for a process that remains after you close the game include:
- Riot Client is still running in the notification area.
- A game or client process failed to exit cleanly after a crash.
- An update, authentication request, or embedded interface is still shutting down.
- Antivirus, firewall, overlay, VPN, or monitoring software is interfering.
- A damaged file or update loop has left a process hung.
Close VALORANT, right-click the Riot Client tray icon and choose Exit when available. If processes remain, end the leftover Riot or VALORANT process in Task Manager, then restart Windows. Do not delete files while they are running.
What high CPU usage means
High CPU is a symptom, not a malware verdict. Record the CPU and memory percentage, number of instances, whether VALORANT is open, whether the issue began after a patch, and whether a restart clears it. One process consuming CPU while the client is updating points to a different problem than a process that respawns after every clean shutdown.
Possible causes include corrupted game or client data, a blocked network request, security software repeatedly scanning the file, third-party overlays, damaged Windows components, a graphics-driver or compatibility problem, or a child process that failed to terminate. Community reports describe multiple instances and extreme CPU use, but those reports are anecdotal; they are not confirmation of a universal VALORANT design or bug (example report; secondary discussion).
Fixes, from least destructive to most destructive
1. Restart after a clean exit
- Close VALORANT.
- Exit Riot Client from the notification area.
- End remaining Riot or VALORANT processes only if normal exit failed.
- Restart Windows and test before changing security settings.
2. Verify and scan the executable
Use Open file location, check the signature, and run a Defender scan as described above. If the path is unexpected, perform a full or Offline scan before allowing the file through security controls.

3. Update Windows and drivers
Install pending Windows and graphics-driver updates, then restart. Vanguard restrictions can involve Windows patches, TPM, Secure Boot, VBS, or HVCI, but these requirements depend on the displayed Vanguard error and your hardware. Riot describes those conditions in its Vanguard update and motherboard-security guidance; do not enable every feature as a generic CPU fix. Microsoft ended free Windows 10 updates, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025, so Windows 10 users should also consider the operating system’s support status.
4. Allow only verified files through Windows Firewall
If a firewall block is indicated, use Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall and browse to the actual files. Common Riot paths include:
VALORANTliveVALORANT.exeVALORANTliveShooterGameBinariesWin64VALORANT-Win64-Shipping.exeVALORANTliveEngineBinariesWin64UnrealCEFSubProcess.exeRiot ClientRiotClientServices.exeC:Program FilesRiot Vanguardvgc.exe
These are examples, not universal paths. Riot-related troubleshooting lists the VALORANT executable among files that may need access (community troubleshooting example). Microsoft recommends allowing a specific blocked app rather than disabling the firewall; see its firewall guidance.
5. Test for third-party interference
Temporarily close Discord and GPU overlays, recording software, RGB and hardware-monitoring tools, VPNs, overclocking utilities, and third-party antivirus game features. Prefer a vendor-supported game mode or narrowly scoped exclusion after verifying the file. Restore normal protection after testing.
6. Use a Windows clean boot
- Sign in as an administrator, search for
msconfig, and open System Configuration. - On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, choose Disable all, then select Apply.
- Open Startup and select Open Task Manager.
- Disable enabled startup items, restart, and test VALORANT.
- Re-enable services and startup items afterward.
Microsoft’s procedure is documented at How to perform a clean boot in Windows. A clean boot is diagnostic, not a permanent configuration.

7. Repair Windows system files
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →8. Reinstall Vanguard before reinstalling VALORANT
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall Riot Vanguard.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Launch Riot Client or VALORANT to install Vanguard again.
- Restart again if requested, then test.
Because VALORANT requires Vanguard, removing Vanguard prevents the game from launching until it is installed again.
9. Repair or reinstall VALORANT
Use the Riot Client repair option if it is offered. If the executable is missing or repeatedly corrupted, uninstall VALORANT and Riot Vanguard through Windows, restart, and reinstall from Riot’s official VALORANT site. Avoid repackaged installers, registry cleaners, and process-download websites.
10. Escalate with logs
Contact Riot Support when the verified file scans clean but crashes, blue-screens, reboots the computer, respawns after a clean reinstall, or remains broken after a clean boot and Vanguard reinstall. Use Riot’s current support form and follow its instructions for the Riot Repair Tool and logs: Riot VALORANT Support. Include the file path, signature result, Defender result, CPU measurements, error codes, and relevant screenshots.

- The location is unrelated to every VALORANT installation.
- The signature is missing or belongs to an unexpected publisher.
- Defender or another reputable security product detects it.
- It launches when Riot Client and VALORANT are closed.
- It has an unrelated parent process or unusual startup entry.
- It persists in random folders after legitimate Riot software is removed.
Quarantine a detected file, run a full or Offline scan, and investigate startup items. Do not whitelist it before verifying its origin.
Frequently asked questions
Is UnrealCEFSubProcess.exe required for VALORANT?
It is a bundled supporting component in the VALORANT installation. Riot does not publicly specify every function, so treat a missing or damaged copy as an installation problem and repair the game rather than substituting an unofficial file.
Can I end it in Task Manager?
Yes, as a temporary step after closing VALORANT and Riot Client. It may return the next time the client starts; ending it does not repair corruption or security conflicts.
Is it part of Vanguard?
No. Vanguard is Riot’s separate anti-cheat client, driver, and platform. This executable is located with VALORANT’s engine files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why can’t I find it in Windows Firewall?
Firewall entries may use a full path, and custom installations use different drives or folders. Choose Allow another app and browse to the verified executable instead of typing a fixed path.
Should I reinstall VALORANT or Vanguard first?
If the symptom points to Vanguard initialization, reinstall Vanguard first. Reinstall VALORANT when the executable is missing, corrupted, or still fails after Vanguard and Windows checks.
