If your iPad shows a headphone icon or sends sound only to headphones, first separate an incorrect audio destination from a stuck wired-accessory detection. Disconnect every headphone, adapter, dock, hub and display; open Control Center and choose iPad Speaker from the audio destination picker; turn Bluetooth off temporarily; then restart the iPad. If the icon remains—particularly when iPad Speaker is missing—inspect the relevant port without using liquid or sharp tools. Persistent symptoms after a drop, liquid exposure or connector damage usually need service rather than more probing.
What “headphones mode” means
This is a symptom, not one specific fault. Typical signs include:
- A headphone icon beside or above the volume control.
- The volume buttons changing headphone volume while the built-in speakers stay silent.
- Music, video, games or notifications working only when headphones are connected.
- iPad Speaker missing from the audio-output list.
Bluetooth routing can look identical to a stuck 3.5 mm jack. Lightning and USB-C accessories can also present an audio route even though the iPad has no traditional headphone jack.
Quick fix sequence
- Remove wired headphones, adapters, docks, hubs, keyboards with audio functions and displays. Remove the case temporarily if it prevents a connector from seating or coming out fully.
- Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner. Expand the Now Playing tile if needed, tap the audio-output/AirPlay destination control, and select iPad Speaker.
- Turn Bluetooth off temporarily, or disconnect the named headphones or speaker, then play a known audio source.
- If the iPad has a 3.5 mm jack, insert a known-good compatible plug fully and remove it gently once or twice.
- Inspect and clean the port safely while the iPad is disconnected from power.
- Restart the iPad. If it is still stuck, perform a force restart.
- Install any available iPadOS update.
- If the icon persists or the port shows damage or liquid exposure, arrange Apple or authorized service.
Apple Community guidance also identifies output selection, Bluetooth disconnection and service escalation as sensible early steps: Apple Support Community discussion.

Step 1: Check where the audio is routed
Select iPad Speaker
- Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
- Expand the media/Now Playing tile if the destination control is not visible.
- Tap the audio-output or AirPlay destination icon.
- Choose iPad Speaker.
Control Center’s exact arrangement varies by iPadOS release and connected accessories, so look for the destination icon rather than a fixed screen position. If speaker audio returns immediately, the problem was routing or a temporary software state rather than a physically stuck jack.
Temporarily disable Bluetooth
In Control Center, turn Bluetooth off for the test or disconnect the listed headphones or speaker. Play audio again. If the speakers work, turn Bluetooth back on and deliberately select the device you want. Turning Bluetooth off does not remove a wired adapter that the iPad is detecting.
Step 2: Remove and test wired accessories
Different iPad connector types create different failure paths. Apple documents these wired-audio options at Apple’s headphone and adapter guide.

If one adapter caused the problem, test without it and, if available, with a known-good compatible adapter. This is a diagnostic reset, not a guaranteed repair. Do not twist, scrape or repeatedly force a plug; a contaminated or damaged connector can worsen with repeated insertion.
Step 3: Inspect and clean the port safely
Power the iPad down if practical, disconnect all cables and use bright light to inspect the jack or Lightning/USB-C port. Remove only loose, visible debris that can be reached without force. A clean, dry, soft-bristled brush or dry lint-free cloth may be used around the opening.

- Do not pour cleaner, water or alcohol into the port.
- Do not use cotton swabs that shed fibers, needles, SIM tools, paper clips, toothpicks or other sharp or metal objects.
- Do not use compressed air or blow forcefully into the connector.
- Do not charge an iPad with a possibly wet port.
Apple’s cleaning guidance stresses a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, keeping liquid out of openings and avoiding sharp or abrasive objects: Apple wired-headphone cleaning guidance. Cleaning a headphone mesh is safer than probing inside an iPad port, where contacts can be bent or debris pushed deeper.
If liquid was involved
Stop plugging and unplugging accessories. Do not use a hair dryer, heat gun, rice or additional liquid to “flush” the connector. Let the device dry naturally and arrange inspection if the symptom remains. Liquid can contaminate contacts or damage circuitry even when the outside appears dry.

- Press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button.
- Press and quickly release the other volume button.
- Press and hold the top button.
- Keep holding until the Apple logo appears.
iPad with a Home button

- Release them when the Apple logo appears.
A force restart normally preserves personal data. It is not the same as recovery-mode Restore, which can erase the iPad. Apple documents both combinations at If your iPad won’t turn on or is frozen.
Step 6: Update iPadOS
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install an available update and restart afterward.
Updating is general software maintenance, not a guaranteed fix for headphone mode. No specific iPadOS release should be credited with fixing this symptom unless Apple’s release notes explicitly say so.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When recovery mode is appropriate
Use recovery mode only when the iPad is also frozen, stuck during startup or unable to complete a normal update. Connect it to a Mac using Finder, an older Mac using iTunes, or a Windows PC using the Apple Devices app or iTunes. When offered Update or Restore, choose Update first. If the software download takes more than 15 minutes, Apple says the iPad may leave recovery mode; repeat the button sequence and try again. Do not choose Restore merely because the speakers are silent, and back up first when possible. See Apple’s recovery-mode instructions.

Signs the problem is probably hardware
- The headphone icon remains with Bluetooth off and every wired accessory removed.
- iPad Speaker is absent from the output selector.
- The port is loose, bent, corroded or visibly damaged.
- Sound works only when a plug is held at a particular angle.
- The issue began after a drop, impact or liquid exposure.
- Several known-good headphones or adapters behave the same way.
- Neither the built-in speakers nor wired headphones produce sound.
- The symptom repeatedly returns after restarts.
These signs point more toward a stuck contact, contaminated port, damaged adapter, speaker/output fault or board-level problem than a volume setting. Apple may inspect the iPad and provide a model-specific estimate; in-person and mail-in service are available, and authorized providers can set their own fees. Service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remainder of the applicable warranty, whichever is longer. Details are at Apple iPad repair.
What not to do
- Do not assume every headphone icon means Bluetooth.
- Do not clean only the speaker grilles when the connector is the suspected detector.
- Do not repeatedly force-restart instead of addressing moisture or physical damage.
- Do not reset all settings or erase the iPad as a first-line port repair; these actions can remove preferences or data without fixing damaged hardware.
- Do not buy a replacement iPad before testing routing, adapters and the port.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my iPad show headphones when none are connected?
The iPad may still be routing audio to Bluetooth, detecting a Lightning or USB-C accessory, or sensing a contaminated, wet or damaged connector. Check the output destination first, then remove accessories and inspect the relevant port.
Can water cause the headphone icon to stay on?
Yes. Liquid can contaminate connector contacts or damage circuitry. Stop charging and probing the port, let the device dry naturally and seek inspection if the symptom persists.
Will a force restart erase my iPad?
A documented force restart normally does not erase personal data. Do not confuse it with recovery-mode Restore, which can be destructive.

The Bottom Line
Choose iPad Speaker, disable Bluetooth, remove every wired accessory, inspect the port safely, then restart, force-restart and update iPadOS. If the icon remains—especially with a missing speaker destination, liquid exposure or visible connector damage—stop experimenting and arrange professional service.
