To hide or restore the Windows 11 Chat button, right-click an empty part of the taskbar, choose Taskbar settings, find Chat under Taskbar items, and switch it Off or On. This changes the taskbar control; it does not necessarily uninstall Microsoft Teams.
The control is the Windows 11 integration for the personal-use Teams experience. A pinned Microsoft Teams shortcut, the work-or-school Teams app, and a Teams notification-area icon are separate items.
Remove the Chat button
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar.
- Select Taskbar settings.
- Locate Taskbar items. On some builds you may need to expand this section.
- Set Chat to Off.
You can reach the same page through Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. Microsoft documents this control in its Windows 11 Teams Chat guidance, and its general taskbar instructions are available in Microsoft’s taskbar support article.
The Chat button should disappear immediately. The personal Teams package can remain installed and can still be opened from Start. Hiding the button is therefore not an uninstall operation.

Add the Chat button back
- Right-click the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Under Taskbar items, set Chat to On.
- Select the restored Chat button.
- If Windows displays Continue or Get Started, follow the prompts to install or configure personal Teams.
On installations where Teams is not yet installed or configured, turning the switch on may restore the icon but open a setup flow instead of a contact list. Microsoft says the default Windows image does not necessarily contain the Teams app, even when the Chat control is exposed.
Hiding Chat versus uninstalling Teams
| Action | Taskbar button | Teams app |
|---|---|---|
| Turn Chat off | Hidden | Usually remains installed |
| Turn Chat on | Visible | May prompt for installation or setup |
| Uninstall personal Teams | May still need to be hidden separately | Removed for the applicable user |
| Administrator policy set to Disabled | Not shown | May still exist |
These are separate controls, as described in Microsoft’s Teams Chat management documentation (updated February 12, 2026).
Uninstall the personal Teams app
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps, then Installed apps. Older Windows 11 releases may call this Apps & features.
- Search for Microsoft Teams.
- Open its three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal.
Windows can contain more than one Teams-related installation. The personal Teams package associated with Chat is distinct from the Teams application used for work or school accounts. Removing one does not reliably remove the other. If the Chat switch remains visible after uninstalling, turn it off separately.

Advanced check with PowerShell
Use the graphical uninstall path unless you already work with AppX packages. To check whether a Teams AppX package is installed for the current Windows user, open PowerShell and run:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Get-AppxPackage -Name '*teams'
An empty result means Microsoft’s guidance does not find a matching Teams AppX package in that user context. It does not prove that no work-or-school Teams installation, machine-wide installer, or package under another user exists.
Microsoft also shows a package-specific command such as:

Remove-AppxPackage -Package "MicrosoftTeams_21302.202.1065.6968_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe"
Do not treat that string as universal. The package name can differ by release, architecture, and installation state. Inspect the result of Get-AppxPackage -Name '*teams' before attempting a package-specific removal, or use Installed apps instead. Avoid registry edits and third-party debloat scripts for this task.
Both commands and their limitations are covered in Microsoft’s Teams Chat documentation.

Do not change Group Policy on a managed computer without your administrator’s approval. Home editions may not provide the same policy editor.
Intune controls the device
On managed Windows 11 Enterprise or Education devices, Intune can configure Experience/ConfigureChatIcon. Microsoft documents these values:
| Value | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 0 | Not configured; follows the Windows edition’s default |
| 1 | Show by default; the user can show or hide Chat |
| 2 | Hide by default; the user can show or hide Chat |
| 3 | Disabled; Chat does not appear and the user cannot change it |

The Settings Catalog is another administrative route: search for Experience and select Configure Chat icon. See Microsoft’s policy documentation before deploying a configuration.
Your Windows build or edition uses different labels
Windows 11 releases and configurations do not all expose the same Teams experience. Look in Taskbar settings for Chat, Teams, or another Teams-related taskbar item. If no such control exists, the feature may be unavailable, removed, or governed by policy rather than malfunctioning.
You are looking at a normal Teams shortcut
A pinned Microsoft Teams icon is an ordinary app shortcut, not necessarily the Windows Chat button. A camera-style icon associated with work-or-school Teams, or an icon in the notification area, is also separate. Removing a shortcut does not uninstall its app, and changing Chat does not automatically remove every Teams icon.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Personal Teams and work-or-school Teams
The Windows 11 Chat integration is associated with the personal-use Teams experience. Work or school Teams is separately installed and managed. You can hide or remove personal Chat while retaining the business Teams app needed for meetings and organizational messaging. Conversely, uninstalling personal Teams should not be described as uninstalling all Teams functionality from the computer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf Teams still launches
Hiding Chat only removes the taskbar control; it does not establish that Teams has stopped running in the background or at sign-in. If you want to keep Teams but prevent automatic startup, open the Teams app’s own settings and review its startup option. The exact label and location vary between Teams versions. Removing Chat and changing startup behavior are separate actions.
Quick Recap
Quick fixes for common outcomes
- Button disappeared but Teams remains: expected; Chat was hidden, not uninstalled.
- Chat returns after you enable it: Windows may be offering to install or configure personal Teams.
- Uninstall fails in PowerShell: the package string may not match your version or architecture; use Installed apps or inspect
Get-AppxPackage -Name '*teams'. - Your setting is ignored on a company PC: Group Policy or Intune may be enforcing it.
- You removed the wrong Teams app: check whether the remaining installation is the separate work-or-school version.
Choose the right action
| Your goal | Best action | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Free taskbar space | Turn Chat off | Teams remains available |
| Keep Teams but reduce clutter and startup distractions | Turn Chat off, then review Teams startup settings | Requires two settings changes |
| Remove personal Teams completely | Uninstall Microsoft Teams, then hide Chat if it remains | Personal Teams access is removed for that user |
| Prevent users from changing Chat | Use Group Policy or Intune value 3 | Requires administrative control |
| Keep work Teams but remove personal Chat | Disable or uninstall only the personal integration | Work or school Teams remains separate |
| Restore Chat later | Turn Chat on again | Setup prompts may appear |
