The safest way to recover a forgotten Steam password is Steam’s official account-recovery flow at help.steampowered.com. You can usually start with the account email address, linked phone number, or Steam account name. The next steps depend on which recovery methods you still control and whether the account may have been taken over.
Before you start
- Use only steampowered.com, store.steampowered.com, steamcommunity.com, and help.steampowered.com. Do not use a phone number found in a search result or contact a supposed Steam employee through Discord or social media.
- Steam Support representatives will not ask for your Steam password or Steam Guard files. Ignore paid “recovery” services and anyone requesting login codes.
- If you suspect the account was stolen, secure your computer and email account before resetting Steam (see the hijacking section below).
Have your Steam account name, former email addresses, linked phone number, and any other ownership information available. Submit sensitive details only through the official support form.
Reset your password with your email or phone
- Open Steam Support.
- Choose Help, I can’t sign in, then look for I forgot my Steam account name or password. Labels can change slightly between the website and Steam client.
- Enter the account’s email address, associated phone number, or Steam account name.
- Complete the CAPTCHA or other verification challenge.
- Select the matching account if Steam finds it, then request the recovery email, text message, or code offered for that account.
- Open the newest message from Steam and follow its reset instructions.
- Create a unique password that you do not reuse on your email account or another service.
- Sign in and review Steam Guard and other security settings.
The available buttons depend on the account’s verified email, phone, email-based Steam Guard, and Mobile Authenticator configuration. The current lookup page is Steam’s login-help flow.
Recover Steam when you know only the account name
Use the same login-help flow and choose the option to search with your Steam account name. The account name is the name used to sign in; it may differ from your profile’s public name or custom URL.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
If Steam locates the account, it may show a partially masked recovery destination or another verification option. If it cannot find the account, use the contact-Support route displayed on that page. Explain that you lost the password, provide the account name, and answer only the ownership questions Steam presents. Do not repeatedly guess passwords or create a replacement account before finishing this attempt.
If you still have email access
Controlling the verified email is normally enough to reset a Steam password; you do not need to know the old password. If the message is missing:
- Check inbox, spam, junk, promotions, quarantine, and server-side filters.
- Confirm that you are checking the address actually associated with Steam.
- Request a new message and use the newest code. Older Steam Guard codes may stop working.
- Add [email protected] and [email protected] to trusted senders.
- If the message has not arrived after three hours, follow the guidance in Steam’s Steam Guard email FAQ.
Restrictive browser privacy settings or cookie-cleaning software can also cause repeated Steam Guard prompts. Retry from a normal browser session while staying on an official Steam domain.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
If you lost access to the email address
- Try the account’s linked phone number or Steam account name in the recovery form.
- If Steam identifies the account, select the option indicating that you no longer have access to the displayed email address.
- Use the resulting Steam Support form and provide a new email address you can access.
- Supply only the information requested in that case. Steam’s ownership checks vary, so no particular receipt, payment record, or document is guaranteed to be accepted.
At the same time, use your email provider’s own account-recovery process. Recovering the old mailbox may restore the fastest Steam verification route.
If you lost your phone or Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator
Linked phone number still works
Steam may send a text-message recovery code to the phone number associated with the account. Depending on the account, that code can remove the lost Mobile Authenticator and return sign-in protection to email-based Steam Guard. This option is conditional on Steam verifying the linked number; it is not a guarantee of recovery. See Steam’s two-factor authentication guidance.
You saved the authenticator recovery code
Use the recovery code supplied when the Mobile Authenticator was added, following the lost-authenticator prompts in Steam’s login-help flow.

You have neither phone nor recovery code
Start with the email or account-name lookup. If those methods fail, choose the official contact-Support route. Steam must verify ownership case by case.
If your Steam account was hacked
A changed email address, unfamiliar trades, or a password that suddenly stopped working can indicate hijacking rather than an ordinary forgotten password. Follow Steam’s order of operations:

- Scan the computer for malware, keyloggers, spyware, malicious browser extensions, and unauthorized software.
- Change the password of the email account associated with Steam, then secure its recovery methods and two-factor authentication.
- Open Steam’s stolen-account recovery page and continue through the official form.
- After regaining access, change the Steam password again if necessary and inspect account security, devices, trades, market activity, and purchases.
Steam’s hijacked-account FAQ explains the same recovery path. Resetting Steam before securing a compromised email or computer can let an attacker take control again.

When the recovery code or email does not arrive
- Verify the account identifier and the destination address shown by Steam.
- Search all filtered folders and your email provider’s quarantine.
- Allow messages from Steam’s official sender addresses.
- Request a fresh code and enter the newest one.
- Check that your browser or security software is not deleting Steam cookies.
- If delivery still has not occurred after three hours, use the support instructions in the Steam Guard email FAQ rather than switching to an unofficial service.
Secure the account after recovery
- Set a long, unique Steam password and keep it separate from your email password.
- Confirm that the account email address and phone number are yours.
- Enable Steam Guard. Steam describes the Mobile Authenticator as the stronger option because login approvals, trades, and Community Market listings require possession of the physical phone.
- Open Steam’s authorized-device controls. Deauthorize unfamiliar devices or use Sign out everywhere when anything looks wrong; Steam states that there is no fixed limit on authorized machines.
- Check profile details, trade offers, market listings, purchase history, and payment activity for changes you did not make. Contact Steam Support promptly about unauthorized transactions.
- Remove suspicious extensions and programs, and keep the computer and email account protected.
- Store the Mobile Authenticator recovery code in a secure offline location.
Steam’s security recommendations are summarized in its account-security FAQ.

- Check the address bar before signing in; a page that merely copies Steam’s design is not Steam.
- Never send a password, Steam Guard code, QR code, recovery code, or Steam Guard file to another person.
- Do not trust a friend’s account, Discord message, social-media profile, or “employee” who directs you away from help.steampowered.com.
- Do not pay someone who claims to bypass Steam’s ownership checks. Such services cannot legitimately override Steam Support and can steal the account.

Is there an official Steam support phone number?
Start at help.steampowered.com. Steam account recovery is handled through its official online support system, not an unsolicited phone service.
How long does Steam Support take?
Steam does not guarantee a universal response time. Follow the case-specific instructions shown in the official support form.
Should I pay someone to recover my account?
No. Paid recovery services cannot bypass Steam’s ownership checks and create a substantial credential-theft risk.
