Choose Ksnip when documented GNOME Wayland, Plasma Wayland and portal support is more important; Spectacle when you use KDE Plasma and need native background capture; and Shutter when its GTK workflow or website-capture feature fits your setup. Wayland behavior still depends on your compositor, distribution release and portal permissions, so test the exact session you use.

There is no authoritative speed, adoption or feature-count dataset for these projects, so performance claims should be based on your own desktop, compositor and display setup rather than a universal ranking.
Flameshot: the best default for most users
Flameshot describes itself as “Powerful, yet simple to use screenshot software.” Its editor is the reason it is the safest recommendation for a mixed Linux desktop: select an area, mark it up immediately, then copy or save the result without opening a separate image editor.
What you can do in the editor
- Draw arrows and borders, add text and counters, and place solid-color boxes.
- Highlight important regions or blur and pixelate sensitive information before sharing.
- Adjust the application to match your preferred capture and annotation workflow.
- Use the command-line interface when a shortcut, script or launcher is more convenient than the interactive editor.
Installation choices
The project documents packages for Arch, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, NixOS, Guix, openSUSE, Void, Solus and ALT, along with AppImage and Flatpak distribution. Prefer the package channel maintained for your distribution when you want desktop integration and routine updates; use Flatpak or AppImage when you need a version that is not in your distribution repository. Keep one installation method per machine where possible so that duplicate launchers and mismatched versions do not confuse shortcut configuration.

Wayland qualification
Flameshot’s documentation describes GNOME and Plasma Wayland support as experimental. That does not mean it fails on every Wayland desktop, but it does mean that a shortcut or capture mode that works on X11 may behave differently after a session change or upgrade. Test region selection, full-screen capture, clipboard copying and the save dialog in the exact compositor you use.
Ksnip: the strongest Wayland-focused alternative
Ksnip is a Qt-based cross-platform screenshot and annotation tool. Its project documentation explicitly lists Linux X11, Plasma Wayland, GNOME Wayland and xdg-desktop-portal Wayland, making it the clearest choice when portal-based capture is part of your requirements.
Capture matrix and annotation
- Capture a custom rectangle, the focused window or the full screen.
- Choose whether the pointer is included and add a delay for menus, tooltips or transient UI.
- Annotate the result before saving or sending it elsewhere.
- Export to PDF or PS in addition to ordinary image workflows.
Uploads and scripting
Ksnip documents Imgur, FTP and script-based uploads, as well as command-line capture. That combination suits a team that wants local editing for ad-hoc work but a repeatable upload hook for tickets, documentation or review systems.
The shortcut limitation to remember
Flathub notes that global hotkeys are currently available only on Windows and X11. On Linux Wayland, plan to start Ksnip from your desktop environment, a launcher or another mechanism supported by your compositor rather than assuming an application-wide shortcut will work. This limitation is separate from Ksnip’s ability to capture through GNOME Wayland, Plasma Wayland or the xdg-desktop portal.

Shutter: choose it for its workflow and website capture
Shutter is a feature-rich Linux screenshot program released as free software under GPLv3. Its differentiator in this group is documented website capture using gnome-web-photo. If you already rely on Shutter’s GTK-oriented workflow or need that website function, changing tools may remove a capability you use even if another application has a more modern Wayland story.
Dependency and maintenance check
Website capture is not the same as taking a picture of the currently visible desktop. Confirm that gnome-web-photo is available and compatible with your distribution before depending on this mode for a recurring process. For ordinary desktop captures, verify that Shutter’s menus, clipboard handling and save locations behave correctly in your current session.
Spectacle: the KDE-native and scriptable choice
Spectacle is KDE’s Linux desktop screenshot utility. The KDE handbook documents extensive command-line options, including a background mode that can capture without showing the GUI or requiring user interaction. That makes Spectacle particularly useful on Plasma systems where desktop integration and unattended capture matter more than cross-desktop consistency.
When background mode helps
- Run a scheduled or manually triggered capture without interrupting the desktop.
- Use a script or launcher that must not open an interactive window.
- Keep a KDE-native workflow instead of mixing desktop toolkits.
Use the command options documented for the Spectacle version installed on your system. KDE’s options evolve, so copy the syntax from the local handbook or the program’s own help output rather than assuming flags from an older release.

How to choose on Wayland
Wayland is a protocol, not one uniform capture implementation. GNOME Shell, KDE Plasma and other compositors enforce different permissions and expose capture through different portal paths. A claim that an application “supports Wayland” is therefore incomplete without naming the compositor and the capture path.
Run this compatibility checklist
- Identify the session type and compositor you actually use, such as GNOME Wayland or Plasma Wayland.
- Install the current package or bundle supported by your distribution and launch the application once from that session.
- Test a rectangular selection, a full-screen capture and a focused-window capture where the tool offers it.
- Check whether the pointer, clipboard and save dialog behave as expected.
- Test your preferred shortcut separately. Ksnip’s documented global-hotkey limitation on Linux Wayland is not a capture failure.
- If a portal permission prompt appears, approve it and repeat the capture after restarting the application.
For a machine that alternates between X11 and Wayland, keep a fallback launcher available. A tool can be reliable in one session and need different shortcuts or permissions in the other.
Installation and update strategy
Distribution packages
Distribution packages normally integrate best with desktop menus, portals and system updates. Flameshot documents packages across a particularly broad set of Linux distributions. Check the package version before filing a bug: a distribution may ship an older release than the project’s AppImage, Flatpak or source build.
Flatpak and AppImage
Flatpak can provide a consistent application build but may require portal permissions for screen capture and access to files or the clipboard. AppImage avoids a traditional package install, yet you still need to make the file executable and provide your own update routine. Whichever channel you choose, avoid installing the same tool from several channels unless you understand which binary your shortcut launches.

Building from source
Source builds are useful when you need a fix that has not reached your distribution, but they make dependency and update responsibility yours. Record the commit or release used so that a later Wayland regression can be reproduced.
Practical workflows
Fast annotated capture
- Start Flameshot or Ksnip from your desktop session.
- Select the region or window and include the pointer only when it explains the interaction you are documenting.
- Blur or pixelate credentials, tokens and personal information before copying or saving.
- Add arrows, text or counters while the context is visible.
- Save a lossless file for documentation, then copy a second version if your destination compresses images.
Delayed menus and transient states
Use Ksnip’s delay when a menu, tooltip or hover state disappears as soon as you move the pointer. A delay is more repeatable than trying to race the interactive capture selection.
Repeatable desktop captures
Use a tool’s documented command-line interface from a launcher or script, and pin the installed version. Spectacle’s background mode is designed for captures that must run without showing the GUI; Flameshot and Ksnip also document command-line capture. Keep output paths explicit and check that the destination directory exists before scheduling a job.

The capture is blank or never appears
First repeat the test in the same session after restarting the application. On Wayland, check portal permissions and whether another screen-sharing or capture prompt is already active. If the problem occurs only on Wayland, compare with an X11 login to isolate a compositor or portal issue.

A global shortcut does nothing
Confirm which binary the desktop shortcut launches and whether another application owns the key combination. On Linux Wayland, do not treat Ksnip’s lack of global hotkeys as a defect: its documented global shortcuts are limited to Windows and X11. Use a desktop launcher or compositor-supported binding instead.
The pointer or a window is missing
Review the tool’s cursor and capture-mode settings, then test a full-screen capture. Some modes expose less information through the compositor than others, so a focused-window result can differ from a region result.
Clipboard copying works but saving fails
Check the destination directory, file permissions and sandbox access. Flatpak permissions can prevent writing to a location that a native package can use. Save to a permitted home-directory folder first, then move the file after capture.
Website capture fails in Shutter
Verify that gnome-web-photo is installed and compatible with your distribution. Website capture depends on that component and is distinct from capturing an already rendered desktop window.

A script breaks after an update
Run the installed program’s help output, compare it with the version-specific documentation and test one capture interactively. Command-line flags can change between releases; record the version alongside your script.
