First, identify which “website icon” you mean
Wix uses different settings for different places where an icon can appear. Choosing the wrong setting is the most common reason an apparently successful change does not affect the place you are checking.

The favicon is the small graphic beside a page title. It does not change the title text, logo displayed in your page header, or the image used when someone shares a page on social media.
Requirements before you upload a custom favicon
- Publish first. Wix’s favicon instructions require the site to be published before you add or replace the icon.
- Use a qualifying Premium plan. Wix states that a custom favicon requires a Premium plan and a connected domain. A free Wix site displays the Wix favicon, and upgrading is required to remove it.
- Prepare a square image. For PNG, JPG, and ICO files, use equal width and height and choose dimensions that are a multiple of 48 pixels. A transparent PNG works when you want the artwork to float without a colored square.
- Design for tiny rendering. Google rescales favicons to 16×16 pixels in search results. Use a simple shape, strong contrast, and little or no fine text.
- Keep a source file. Save the original artwork separately so you can produce a light, dark, or simplified variant later.
Change the favicon in Wix Editor or Studio Editor
- Publish the site. Open the Wix project in Wix Editor or Studio Editor and publish any pending changes.
- Open the dashboard. From the site’s dashboard, select Settings.
- Open Website settings. Choose Website settings from the settings menu.
- Find Favicon. In the favicon section, select Upload Image.
- Choose the file. Pick your prepared ICO, PNG, JPG, or SVG image. Confirm that the preview is recognizable at a small size.
- Save the setting. Save or confirm the upload in the dashboard.
- Check the live domain. Open the connected domain in a new private window or another browser. Check a browser tab and bookmark the page if you want to verify both contexts.
This dashboard setting applies to the site; it is not controlled by the browser-tab title field in a page’s SEO settings. If you still see the old icon, test the published, connected domain rather than an editor preview.

Change the mobile, bookmark, or social icon instead
If your goal is a phone home-screen shortcut or the image shown when a page is shared, use Wix’s separate social-image control:
- Open the site dashboard and choose Settings → Website settings.
- Go to General social image.
- Select Upload Image, choose the artwork, and then select Add Icon.
- Use a 180×180-pixel image for Apple-device shortcuts or a 192×192-pixel image for Android devices, as Wix recommends.
- Save, publish if Wix asks you to, and test the live page from the device or service where the image should appear.
This image is separate from the browser-tab favicon. Changing one does not automatically replace the other.
Choosing and preparing the right file
ICO
ICO is the traditional favicon format and can contain multiple icon sizes. It is useful when you want broad compatibility, but make sure the smallest embedded size remains legible.
PNG
PNG is a practical choice for crisp artwork and supports transparency. A transparent background prevents a white or colored box around a mark that is meant to sit on different browser themes.

JPG is accepted by Wix, although compression and the lack of transparency can make a small logo look soft. Export at a high quality and inspect it at 16×16 pixels.

SVG
SVG preserves vector sharpness and is accepted by Wix. Keep the design simple and verify that any font has been converted to outlines or otherwise renders correctly in the exported file.
Practical artwork checklist
- Put the key symbol in the center with comfortable padding.
- Remove thin outlines and small words that disappear when reduced.
- Check the icon on both light and dark browser chrome.
- Export a square non-SVG file at 48×48, 96×96, or another multiple of 48 pixels.
- Keep transparency only when it improves recognition; a transparent mark can become hard to see on some backgrounds.
If you have no suitable artwork, Wix identifies Logo Maker as an option for creating a personalized favicon. Treat that as an asset-creation step; the upload itself still happens in Website settings.
Why the new favicon is not in Google yet
Saving the favicon in Wix and seeing it in Google Search are separate events. Search engines update their stored version after a later crawl, and Google decides whether and when to index or display a favicon. Wix does not guarantee that a custom icon will appear in results.

There is no reliable, universal publication time to promise. After confirming that the live homepage is accessible and indexable, Wix suggests resubmitting the sitemap in Google Search Console as a possible way to encourage discovery. That can request a new crawl; it cannot force Google to display the icon.
Check indexability before requesting a recrawl
- Open the homepage on the connected domain, not only inside the Wix editor.
- Confirm that the homepage is not blocked from search engines by the site’s indexing settings.
- Make sure the domain resolves consistently and does not redirect visitors to an inaccessible page.
- After those checks, use Google Search Console’s sitemap submission or inspection tools.
Troubleshooting common Wix favicon problems
The Favicon option is missing
The most likely causes are that the site is not published, the account is on a free plan, or no domain is connected. Publish the site, verify the plan and domain status, then reopen Settings → Website settings. Wix’s documented requirement for a custom favicon is a Premium plan with a connected domain.

Wix rejects the image
Confirm that the file is ICO, PNG, JPG, or SVG. For non-SVG files, make both dimensions equal and use a multiple of 48 pixels. Re-exporting a damaged or unusually encoded image often resolves an upload error.
The icon looks blurry or unreadable
Inspect the artwork at 16×16 pixels, simplify it, enlarge the main shape, and remove fine text. A high-resolution source does not help if the design itself contains details that vanish at favicon size.

Favicons can remain in a browser’s local cache. Test the published domain in a private window, a different browser, or a device that has never visited the site. Also confirm that you changed the favicon setting rather than the General social image setting.
Google still shows the Wix icon
Verify that the custom favicon is visible on the live homepage and that search engines can index that homepage. Google controls crawling, indexing, and display, so a saved Wix setting does not guarantee an immediate replacement. A sitemap resubmission may help Google discover the update sooner, but it is not a display guarantee.
The browser tab text changed, but the icon did not
Those are independent settings. Edit the page title in the appropriate SEO or page settings for the text, and use Website settings → Favicon for the graphic.

Maintenance checklist after changing the icon
- Keep the favicon and mobile/social artwork as separate source files.
- After a redesign, test the live domain in a private browser window and on a phone.
- Check both light and dark browser chrome if your mark uses low-contrast colors.
- When the icon matters in search, verify homepage indexability and use Search Console’s sitemap tools rather than assuming Google has refreshed it.
- Recheck the dashboard labels if Wix changes its editor or settings interface.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove the Wix favicon without changing my site’s design?
Yes, but Wix says a custom favicon—and therefore removal of the default Wix icon—requires a qualifying Premium plan and connected domain. The page layout and header logo can remain unchanged.
Should I upload one image for every device?
Use the Favicon setting for browser tabs and the General social image setting for mobile shortcuts and sharing. Wix documents separate recommended dimensions because those placements are handled independently.
Does submitting a sitemap force Google to show my new icon?
No. Sitemap submission can help Google discover the updated page, but Google controls crawling, indexing, and whether a favicon is displayed.
