First separate two problems: an <input> can look wrong in the rendered page, or it can look acceptable but fail to become an editable PDF form field. wkhtmltopdf treats those as different concerns. Its documented --disable-forms option controls conversion of HTML controls into PDF form fields; it is not documented as a CSS-repair switch. Record your exact wkhtmltopdf build and operating system, reduce the page to one input with inline CSS, and then test stylesheet loading, the cascade, and engine limitations one variable at a time.
What wkhtmltopdf is actually doing
wkhtmltopdf renders HTML with an older Qt/WebKit engine and then writes a PDF. During that process, it may also convert HTML controls into PDF form fields. Those operations can produce two different symptoms:
- Visual styling: the border, font, padding, width, height, background, or text color does not match the CSS.
- Interactivity: the resulting PDF field is missing or cannot be edited as expected.
A report about a non-editable field does not prove that CSS was ignored, and a report about a wrong border does not prove that form conversion failed. Diagnose the symptom you actually need to fix.
1. Capture the exact rendering environment
Before changing CSS, save the binary version and platform details. Rendering behavior can vary with the wkhtmltopdf release, operating-system libraries, package source, and whether the executable is a patched-Qt build.

- Run
wkhtmltopdf --versionand copy the complete output. - Record the operating system and version, installation method, and CPU architecture.
- Save the exact conversion command, input HTML, linked assets, and output PDF.
- State whether the defect is visual styling, editability, or both.
The project’s support guidance asks for the version, operating system/version, and a detailed reproducible test case. Supplying those details prevents a vague “CSS is ignored” report from becoming an untestable argument.
2. Build a minimal input test
Remove your framework, templates, JavaScript, external fonts, and unrelated controls. Start with one file and one field. This does not guarantee a workaround; it identifies which part of the original document changes the result.
<!doctype html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<style>
html, body { margin: 0; padding: 0; }
body { font-family: Arial, sans-serif; }
label { display: block; margin-bottom: 6px; }
input {
box-sizing: border-box;
width: 280px;
height: 36px;
padding: 8px 10px;
border: 2px solid #2356a6;
border-radius: 4px;
background: #f5f8ff;
color: #111;
font-size: 16px;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<label for="name">Name</label>
<input id="name" name="name" value="Example">
</body>
</html>
Convert that file with the same binary used by your application:
wkhtmltopdf input-test.html input-test.pdf
If the minimal file renders correctly, add back one stylesheet, class, font, pseudo-class, and script at a time. The first addition that changes the PDF is your next investigation target.

Use the HTML that the converter really receives
Server-side applications often generate different markup for a browser and for the PDF job. Save the final HTML string to disk and run wkhtmltopdf against that file. Check that the stylesheet link has a usable URL from the converter’s execution environment, not merely from your desktop browser.

Check local files and authentication
A stylesheet behind a login, a relative path resolved from an unexpected working directory, or a file blocked by the process sandbox can leave the renderer with unstyled markup. For diagnosis, inline the critical rules and use absolute, reachable asset URLs. Once the test works, restore external assets individually.
Inspect the cascade
Temporarily remove competing declarations and simplify selectors. A framework rule, a more-specific selector, an !important declaration, or an inherited font can make a valid rule appear to be ignored. Test a plain element selector such as input { border: 2px solid red; } before rebuilding complex selectors.
Test properties individually
Keep a working width and border while adding padding, background, font, radius, and pseudo-class rules one at a time. This tells you whether the issue is asset delivery, the cascade, or support for a particular property in the old rendering engine.

For a static visual PDF
If the PDF only needs to show a filled or blank box, compare output with form conversion disabled:
wkhtmltopdf --disable-forms input-test.html static-test.pdf
This suppresses conversion of HTML controls into PDF form fields. It can help you determine whether the PDF-field layer is responsible for the appearance you see, but the option is not documented as a CSS fix. Use it only when a non-interactive page is acceptable.

For an interactive PDF form
Leave form conversion enabled (the default) and test editability separately from visual appearance. Confirm the viewer you use supports the generated field type, then inspect the PDF in a second viewer. A field that is not editable in one viewer may still be present, while a genuinely missing field requires a different diagnosis from a border or font mismatch.
5. Account for the old engine
The wkhtmltopdf project’s status page describes the underlying stack this way: “Qt 4 (which wkhtmltopdf uses) hasn’t been supported since 2015, the WebKit in it hasn’t been updated since 2012.” That context matters when modern browser output and wkhtmltopdf output diverge. A CSS feature that works in a current Chromium-based browser is not automatically supported by this renderer.
Do not assume every discrepancy is a universal wkhtmltopdf input bug. Existing issue reports describe individual failures, including general CSS problems in version 0.12.5 and a separate report of a PDF field that was not editable as expected. They establish reported behavior, not one confirmed cause or failure rate.
When the minimal page behaves differently in another engine, run the same HTML/CSS through an alternative renderer and compare the result. The project status page names WeasyPrint and commercial Prince as alternatives to consider for report generation; it does not provide a current compatibility, release, or price comparison for them.
6. A repeatable diagnostic matrix
| Test | What changes | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Inline CSS, one input | Removes asset and cascade variables | Whether the basic control can be styled at all |
| External CSS restored | Loads the real stylesheet | Whether URL, permissions, or ordering is the problem |
| Simple selector restored | Removes specificity complexity | Whether competing rules win |
| Default form conversion | Keeps PDF fields enabled | Whether the issue concerns interactivity |
--disable-forms |
Produces a static rendering | Whether field conversion changes the visual result |
| Same input in another renderer | Changes the engine | Whether old WebKit support is the limiting factor |

8. Common symptoms and targeted fixes
The input is unstyled
Inline a single obvious rule, such as a red border. If it appears, investigate the external stylesheet URL and cascade. If it does not, confirm that the saved HTML is the file being converted and that you are running the expected binary.
Dimensions or padding are wrong
Set box-sizing: border-box, explicit width and height, and simple pixel padding. Remove inherited rules and test without responsive media queries. Then add the original layout rules back individually.
The PDF shows a box but it cannot be edited
That is an interactivity question, not proof of ignored CSS. Keep form conversion enabled, test in another PDF viewer, and include the field’s expected behavior in your report.
Disabling forms changes the look
That confirms the conversion layer affects the result, but it does not identify a universal CSS repair. Choose the static output only if editability is unnecessary; otherwise continue with an interactive-field test and consider another renderer.

The browser and PDF disagree
Compare the exact HTML, loaded assets, viewport assumptions, and engine capabilities. A modern browser is not a reference implementation for wkhtmltopdf’s older WebKit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance, reliability, and migration decisions
Minimal files render faster and make failures deterministic, so keep a small regression fixture with every input-control style your application relies on. Run it whenever the wkhtmltopdf binary, operating system image, fonts, or CSS pipeline changes. Avoid declaring success from one browser preview; compare the generated PDF itself.
If required CSS remains inconsistent, evaluate alternatives using the same fixture. Compare: fidelity for this exact HTML and control; need for interactive fields versus a visual page; CSS and JavaScript support; deployment/runtime requirements; and current maintenance and licensing cost. The status-page alternatives are leads for evaluation, not a guarantee that either one matches your document.
Or skip the browser setup
If your real goal is a clean image or PDF of a web page rather than an editable PDF form, ScreenshotNeo makes the capture a single API request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It does not turn an HTML input into an editable PDF form, so use wkhtmltopdf or a dedicated PDF-form workflow when field interactivity is required.
