If wkhtmltopdf makes the whole page look too small, compare a default render with one using --disable-smart-shrinking. If only a long URL, table, or line is cut off, fix its print layout instead: disabling shrinking can make content wider and clip it at the page edge. First identify whether the problem is global scaling, line overflow, or pagination; each needs a different fix.
Identify what is shrinking before changing options
“Too long” can describe several different PDF problems. A document that spans many pages with normally sized text is not necessarily shrinking. A long unbroken string may run past the printable edge, while a wide table can force a layout wider than the page. If all page content is uniformly smaller than expected, automatic fitting or the relationship between page dimensions and content width is more likely to be involved.
- Everything is smaller: check smart shrinking and the page geometry.
- One word, URL, table, or line is cut off: inspect print CSS wrapping and overflow.
- Text looks normal but content spans pages unexpectedly: investigate pagination and page-break behavior.
A historical wkhtmltopdf issue describes right-side truncation even though the reporter said the HTML looked correct in a browser. That illustrates why the generated PDF and exact renderer input matter; it does not establish a universal cause or fix (wkhtmltopdf issue 1524).
Capture the exact environment and reproduce the problem
Before tuning, save a minimal HTML/CSS/JavaScript example that still shows the issue. Record the wkhtmltopdf version, operating system and version, whether the binary reports patched Qt, the paper size, margins, all command-line options, and any wrapper or library version. Keep those details with each output PDF so you can compare changes accurately.

The wkhtmltopdf support page requests the version, operating system and version, and a detailed reproducible test case. A small reproducer is more useful than a large document with unrelated content because it lets you vary one likely cause at a time.
Test smart shrinking without treating it as a guaranteed fix
The wkhtmltopdf command-line manual says smart shrinking is enabled by default. Its --disable-smart-shrinking option disables WebKit’s strategy that makes the pixel/DPI ratio non-constant (wkhtmltopdf command-line documentation).
- Render your saved example with the exact command and options that produce the small text.
- Run it again with the same input, binary, paper size, margins, and other options, adding
--disable-smart-shrinking. - Compare text scale, right-edge fit, line wrapping, and page count in the resulting PDFs.
If the second PDF is closer to the intended scale and still fits, the comparison suggests automatic shrinking was affecting the output. If content clips at the right edge, the flag has exposed a width or geometry problem; it has not solved it. A report involving wkhtmltopdf 0.12.4 with patched Qt on Windows Server 2012 R2 describes clipping after disabling smart shrinking, but that historical environment-specific report is not a prediction for every build (wkhtmltopdf issue 2051).

Check printable width, paper size, and margins
The content must fit the page’s usable width: page width minus left and right margins. The command-line manual describes A4 as the default page size and documents other choices such as Letter and Legal, explicit page width and height, and margin options. Use the dimensions that match the intended output rather than compensating blindly with zoom.
- Confirm that the selected paper size is the one the recipient expects.
- Check both horizontal margins and any explicit width setting.
- Look for a wide element, fixed-width container, or table that exceeds the usable width.
- Inspect print-specific CSS, not only the browser’s screen layout.
If a wider paper size or smaller margins are appropriate for the document, make that change deliberately and check the resulting PDF. If the page dimensions cannot change, adjust the print layout so its content fits those dimensions.
Fix a long string, table, or overflowing line in print CSS
When only one piece of content is cut off, treat it as a wrapping or overflow problem rather than globally changing scale. Reproduce the offending text, URL, table cell, or row in the minimal sample, then inspect its width and print styles. Make sure the layout permits the content to wrap or otherwise fit within the available page width. For tables, check whether a column or unbroken value is forcing the table wider than the printable area.

Browser previews are not conclusive: a historical issue reports a mismatch between browser rendering and the generated PDF, but does not establish the cause. Verify every change in a PDF produced by the exact wkhtmltopdf binary and options used in deployment (issue report).
Adjust zoom, DPI, minimum font size, or print-media settings cautiously
The command-line manual documents zoom (default 1 in that reference), DPI, minimum font size, print-media selection, page dimensions, and margins. The library API also exposes corresponding settings for intelligent shrinking, minimum font size, zoom factor, DPI, margins, page size, and print media (command-line options; library page settings).
These controls are not a universal recipe. Change one relevant setting at a time, keep the input and build fixed, and inspect scale, clipping, wrapping, and pagination after each render. The available documentation does not establish one zoom or DPI value that fixes every layout.

Check wrappers against the installed binary
If an option behaves differently through Python/pdfkit or another integration, run the installed wkhtmltopdf binary directly with the same input and intended options. Then check the wrapper’s option mapping and confirm which binary and version it invokes. One historical report mentions difficulty passing the flag through a pdfkit script; it is an individual report, not evidence of a general pdfkit defect (wkhtmltopdf issue 2051).

All text and content are too small
Compare default output with --disable-smart-shrinking. If scale improves, inspect for an element forcing the page wider than intended and verify paper size and margins. Do not keep the flag solely because text got larger; confirm that the right edge still fits.
The right side is cut off
Check the content width against paper width minus margins, then inspect wide tables, fixed-width elements, and long unbroken values in print CSS. If clipping began after disabling smart shrinking, restore the default while correcting layout or page geometry, then repeat the comparison.

A browser preview looks right but the PDF does not
Use the PDF output as the diagnostic result. Preserve the exact HTML, CSS, JavaScript, binary version, OS, and options involved; a browser rendering does not establish how wkhtmltopdf will wrap or paginate the same page.
The document is long, but text size looks normal
Investigate page breaks and flow rather than shrinking. Check the PDF page count and where content moves between pages; changing zoom may alter both scale and pagination without addressing the underlying page-break behavior.
A wrapper ignores or changes the flag
Compare a direct invocation of the installed binary with the wrapper invocation using the same reproducible input and settings. Confirm the wrapper is calling the expected executable and mapping the option as intended.

What to include when asking for help
Send a minimal reproducer with the generated PDF or a clear description of the failure, plus the wkhtmltopdf version, OS and version, patched-Qt status if reported, paper size, margins, command-line options, and wrapper/library version. State whether the failure is global shrinking, right-edge clipping, wrapping, or pagination. This gives others the information the official support page asks for and makes it possible to distinguish a rendering issue from a layout or integration issue.
