Puppeteer takes the screenshot at the exact point your script calls and awaits page.screenshot() (or an element handle’s screenshot()). It does not decide that a page is “finished” for you. Await navigation, the content you need, or an application-specific readiness signal first, then invoke the screenshot method.
The exact moment Puppeteer captures
page.screenshot() is the capture operation. It returns a promise for the image data, so the browser captures the current rendered state when that call executes in your script’s sequence. Any wait you place before it determines what “ready” means for your page.
A reliable baseline is to combine a navigation milestone with a check for the content that must appear in the image:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage();
page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(30_000);
page.setDefaultTimeout(10_000);
await page.goto('https://example.com/report', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2'
});
await page.waitForSelector('#report', { visible: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'report.png' });
await browser.close();
})();
Here, goto waits for a navigation event, waitForSelector waits until the report element is visible, and only then does the screenshot run. Replace the selector with the element that proves your own application is ready.

What each navigation waitUntil value actually means
The waitUntil option observes document lifecycle events or network activity; it is not a universal test that the final pixels are rendered. Choose the milestone that matches the page and then add a page-specific condition when the visual state depends on JavaScript.
| Value | What Puppeteer observes | When it is useful | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
domcontentloaded |
The document has been parsed. | Static markup or a page where later resources are irrelevant. | Images, fonts, data requests, and client rendering may still be pending. |
load |
The document’s load event. |
Pages whose required resources finish by the load event. | Single-page applications can continue rendering after it fires. |
networkidle0 |
No more than zero active network connections for at least 500 ms. | A page expected to become completely quiet. | Analytics, polling, WebSockets, or long-lived requests can delay or prevent this state. |
networkidle2 |
No more than two active connections for at least 500 ms. | Common for pages with a small amount of background traffic; Puppeteer’s screenshot example uses it. | The page may still be changing visually after the network quiet period. |
Both network-idle thresholds use a 500 ms quiet window. A quiet network only says that requests are quiet for that interval; it does not say that a chart has finished animating, a framework has committed its final DOM, or a web font has been applied.
Wait for the content the image must contain
Use a visible selector for a known result
page.waitForSelector() resolves immediately if the selector is already present. With visible: true, it waits for an element that is present and not hidden. This is usually clearer than guessing how long a request will take:
await page.goto('https://example.com/dashboard', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded'
});
await page.waitForSelector('[data-test="sales-chart"]', {
visible: true,
timeout: 20_000
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'dashboard.png' });
If the element is inserted early and populated later, wait for a stronger condition than mere existence—for example, a “loaded” class or a status element whose text changes to “Complete.”
Wait for an application condition
For a single-page application, expose or detect a state that represents completion. waitForFunction polls in the page context until the expression is true:
await page.goto('https://example.com/app', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.waitForFunction(
() => window.appReady === true,
{ timeout: 30_000 }
);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'app-ready.png' });
You can instead test a DOM property, such as a table having rows, or a loading indicator becoming hidden. Keep the predicate deterministic and tied to the visual result you need.

Add network idle only when it represents useful work
page.waitForNetworkIdle() waits for network inactivity and always waits at least its configured idle time; its documented default idleTime is 500 ms. It can be added after navigation when an application fetches data after the initial document:
await page.goto('https://example.com/report', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.waitForNetworkIdle({ idleTime: 800, timeout: 20_000 });
await page.waitForSelector('#report', { visible: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'report.png' });
Do not use network idle as a substitute for a known readiness signal when the page maintains open connections or keeps rendering after requests finish. Combining network idle with a selector or application condition is safer.

Account for fonts, images, and animation
A visible container can exist while its fonts or images are still settling. When those assets affect the pixels, wait for them explicitly:
await page.waitForSelector('#invoice', { visible: true });
await page.evaluate(async () => {
if (document.fonts) await document.fonts.ready;
const images = Array.from(document.images);
await Promise.all(images.map(image => {
if (image.complete) return Promise.resolve();
return new Promise(resolve => {
image.addEventListener('load', resolve, { once: true });
image.addEventListener('error', resolve, { once: true });
});
}));
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'invoice.png' });
If a CSS animation or chart transition changes the captured frame, disable motion in your test stylesheet or wait for the application’s “animation complete” signal. A fixed delay can be a last resort, but it is slower on fast runs and still unreliable on slow ones.
Navigation started by a click
When a click triggers navigation, register the navigation wait and perform the click together. This prevents the navigation event from occurring before your code starts waiting:
await page.goto('https://example.com/start', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
const [response] = await Promise.all([
page.waitForNavigation({ waitUntil: 'networkidle2' }),
page.click('a[href="/report"]')
]);
await page.waitForSelector('#report', { visible: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'report-after-click.png' });
If the click updates the current document without navigation, replace waitForNavigation with a selector or application-state wait that describes the update.

Choose the screenshot scope after readiness is established
Viewport capture
Calling page.screenshot() without a scope option captures the current viewport. The pixels reflect the viewport size, device scale, scroll position, and state at the instant of the call.
Full-page capture
Use fullPage: true when the output must include the entire page rather than the visible viewport:
await page.screenshot({
path: 'full-page.png',
fullPage: true
});
Make sure the page has reached the state you want before requesting the full image. Lazy content, infinite scroll, and client-side layout changes can still alter what is available to capture.
Capture one element
Wait for the target, obtain its element handle, and call ElementHandle.screenshot():
const card = await page.waitForSelector('.summary-card', {
visible: true
});
await card.screenshot({ path: 'summary-card.png' });
Puppeteer scrolls the element into view when needed. The operation throws if the element has detached from the DOM, so reacquire the handle after a rerender rather than reusing a stale handle.
Control the region
The screenshot options include clip for a specific rectangle and captureBeyondViewport for controlling whether content outside the viewport can be included. These affect scope; they do not replace readiness waits.

A production-ready timing pattern
The following script keeps navigation, application readiness, asset settling, capture, and cleanup in a predictable order:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
async function capture() {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(30_000);
page.setDefaultTimeout(15_000);
await page.goto('https://example.com/report', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2'
});
await page.waitForSelector('#report[data-state="ready"]', {
visible: true
});
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts?.ready);
await page.screenshot({
path: 'report.png',
fullPage: true
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
}
capture().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Use a navigation timeout that matches your service-level requirement and a separate, usually shorter, timeout for selectors and application conditions. Log which wait failed; a timeout waiting for navigation points to a different problem than a timeout waiting for a result element.

- Fastest:
domcontentloadedplus a selector, when the selector truly represents the finished view. - More conservative:
networkidle2plus a selector; it tolerates limited background requests but adds latency. - Strictest network condition:
networkidle0; useful for pages that should become completely quiet, but risky with telemetry, polling, or persistent connections. - Most deterministic: an application readiness flag or state-specific selector, optionally combined with an asset wait.
Capture as soon as the required condition is true. Waiting for every request on a page can waste time when advertisements, analytics, or chat systems are unrelated to the image. Conversely, capturing immediately after navigation can produce a shell, a blank chart, or an unstyled layout. The right condition is the narrowest one that proves the pixels you need are ready.
Troubleshooting screenshot timing
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot contains a loading spinner | Navigation completed before application data rendered. | Wait for the result selector, a loaded state, or an application condition. |
networkidle0 times out |
Polling, analytics, WebSockets, or another request keeps the page active. | Use networkidle2 or a selector/application wait instead. |
| Element wait times out | Wrong selector, delayed navigation, iframe content, or an element that never becomes visible. | Verify the URL and selector, wait for the frame that owns the element, and inspect whether CSS keeps it hidden. |
| Element screenshot says the node detached | A framework rerender replaced the element after you obtained its handle. | Wait for the stable state, reacquire the handle, and capture immediately. |
| Fonts or images look incomplete | Assets finished after the container appeared. | Await document.fonts.ready and image completion, or use the application’s asset-ready signal. |
| Different runs show different chart frames | Animation or asynchronous rendering is still changing pixels. | Disable animation for capture or wait for an explicit completion condition. |
| Only the visible portion appears | The default scope is the viewport. | Pass fullPage: true or capture a specific element. |

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, while its capture pipeline accepts cookie and consent banners before removing more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be disabled.
Use the same target URL in a GET request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/report -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. The service reports whether a response was a clean page, a bot check or CAPTCHA, a blank page, a timeout, a failed load, or a cache hit through X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers; only clean shots are billed, so those failure cases and cache hits cost nothing.
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/report"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/report' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

FAQ
Does page.screenshot() return a file path?
It returns a promise for image data. Supplying a path writes that data to a file; without one, your code can keep the returned buffer in memory or send it elsewhere.

Can I capture a PDF with the same timing waits?
Yes. Navigation, selector, application-state, and asset waits are independent of the output method. Once the page is ready, call the PDF API instead of the screenshot API and apply the PDF options your document requires.
Why does a selector wait resolve too early?
Presence and visibility do not prove that the element’s data is final. Use a selector that represents the completed state, test its text or attributes with waitForFunction, or wait for a readiness flag emitted by the application.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reuse one Puppeteer page for several captures?
Yes, but reset the page state between URLs and run each navigation and readiness sequence afresh. Do not carry an old element handle across a rerender or navigation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should a timeout error tell me first?
Identify which operation timed out—navigation, network idle, selector, or application predicate. Each observes a different condition, so the failing operation points to the appropriate fix.
Is a fixed delay ever appropriate?
A short delay can accommodate a known animation, but it is less reliable than waiting for the selector or application state that proves the visual result is complete.
