It can capture the visible viewport, a selected area, a DOM node, an entire page, or a device-framed view without installing an extension. Add an extension when you need one-click repeat captures, annotation, OCR, batch or multi-tab jobs, PDF workflows, or integrations. GoFullPage is the focused choice for full-page images and PDFs; FireShot is better for batch and document-heavy work; FullPageShot is a PNG-first option with clearly stated limits on virtualized pages.
This guide shows the native Chrome workflows, compares those extensions by the capabilities that matter, explains the difficult cases such as sticky headers and infinite scroll, and then shows how to automate captures with an extension or an API.
Choose the capture route first
Use the simplest tool that matches the job:
- DevTools: best for occasional viewport, element, area, full-page, or device-frame captures. It runs locally and adds no extension permissions.
- GoFullPage: best when the recurring task is “capture this whole page” and save an image or PDF.
- FireShot: best for documentation, receipts, research archives, multiple tabs, URL lists, and PDF output.
- FullPageShot: best when you specifically want a single PNG and need explicit warnings about layouts that cannot be represented as one image.
- Custom extension or DevTools Protocol: best for a controlled internal workflow, such as a selector-based capture, redaction rules, or a CI job.

For sensitive pages, inspect each extension’s current Chrome Web Store permissions, update date, data-use statement, and export limits before installation. Those details can change independently of Chrome itself.
Capture a screenshot with Chrome DevTools
Chrome’s built-in route covers the core screenshot types documented by Chrome for Developers. Open the page you want, then open DevTools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux ( ⌘⌥I on macOS).
Visible viewport
- Open DevTools.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+P ( ⌘⇧P on macOS) to open the Command Menu.
- Type Capture screenshot.
- Choose Capture screenshot. Chrome saves the currently visible viewport as a PNG.
Use the Device Toolbar (the phone/tablet icon or Ctrl+Shift+M) first if you need a particular viewport width, device scale, or mobile user-agent emulation.

Full page, including content below the fold
- Open the Command Menu.
- Choose Capture full size screenshot.
- Wait for the PNG download to finish.
This is a rendered-page capture, not a print-to-PDF operation. Lazy content that has not loaded, an application that only renders rows currently near the viewport, and a page whose scroll container is not the document can produce an incomplete result.
One DOM node
- In DevTools, open the Elements panel.
- Right-click the element in the DOM tree.
- Choose Capture node screenshot.
This is useful for a card, invoice, chart, or component without manually cropping the rest of the page. The node must be rendered and visible in the inspected document.
A rectangular area
- Open the Command Menu and choose Capture area screenshot.
- Drag over the region to capture.
- Release to download the selected rectangle.
For a repeatable crop, a node capture is usually more reliable than drawing the same rectangle by eye.

Device-frame output
Enable the Device Toolbar, select a device preset or enter your own width and height, choose the device pixel ratio you need, and then run the screenshot command. A device frame is useful for mockups; it is different from simply setting a narrow viewport because it adds the simulated hardware frame.
Protocol-level capture
The Chrome DevTools Protocol Page domain exposes screenshot commands with viewport and clipping parameters. A script can therefore request a page or a defined region instead of relying on mouse coordinates. This is the foundation used by many browser automation systems, but you must still handle navigation timing, authentication, lazy loading, and nested scroll containers yourself.

What extensions add beyond DevTools
Extensions put the common action on a toolbar button or shortcut and often add editing, OCR, cloud integrations, format choices, or batch operations. They can also introduce permissions and their own page-size limits, so “one click” does not mean “works on every web application.”

GoFullPage: the focused full-page choice
GoFullPage is the most direct answer when your requirement is a complete page image or PDF rather than annotation or batch management. Click its toolbar button or use Alt+Shift+P. The extension scrolls through the page and assembles the result. Its Chrome Web Store changelog records Manifest V3 and capture fixes through 2025-03-19, a maintenance signal rather than a guarantee that every site will behave identically.
Expect trouble on exceptionally long pages: the listing documents a fallback in which Chrome stores the page as several images instead of one oversized image. Check the output before sharing it, especially when a page has fixed headers, animated content, or sections that change while the capture is running.
FireShot: batch and document workflows
FireShot covers the usual visible, selection, and entire-page modes, then adds capabilities that are absent from a basic DevTools flow: capture all open tabs to an image or PDF, capture a list of URLs, export PDF with links, save PNG or JPEG, copy to the clipboard, and print. That combination suits release documentation, receipts, legal or research archives, and a set of known pages.
Because the listing describes local screenshot storage and a premium upgrade, verify the current free-versus-paid boundaries and the extension’s data-use language in the Chrome Web Store before planning a large job. For private dashboards, confirm whether your selected operation remains local and whether any optional integration is enabled.

FullPageShot: one PNG with explicit layout warnings
FullPageShot emphasizes a single PNG containing the tab’s scrolling height. Its listing says it handles lazy-loaded images, carousels, body-scroll layouts, and inner-scroll layouts, but it also warns about virtualized or infinite-scroll feeds and some editor shells. A virtualized table may create only the rows near the viewport; there is no complete DOM image for the extension to assemble.
The extension requests debugger and downloads permissions. Read those permissions in context and remove the extension when you no longer need it. If a capture is blank or stops early, test the same page with a small viewport capture and inspect whether the content is actually rendered as you scroll.
Sticky headers, lazy images, and scrolling traps
Sticky or fixed elements
A fixed navigation bar can appear once per stitched segment, cover content, or move as the extension scrolls. Compare the top, middle, and bottom of a test capture. If the repeated header makes the result unusable, use a DOM-node capture, temporarily hide the selector with DevTools, or add CSS in a controlled custom workflow.
Lazy-loaded images
Scroll-triggered images may be missing if the capture starts before the page has had time to load them. Allow the page to settle, scroll through it once, or use an extension that documents lazy-image handling. A page that swaps images while scrolling can still produce a mismatched sequence.
Nested scroll containers
Many dashboards scroll a panel rather than the document. Full-page commands aimed at the document may capture only the panel’s visible portion. Select the panel node and capture it, use the panel’s own scroll behavior, or automate the panel with a selector-aware browser script.

Virtualized and infinite-scroll interfaces
Infinite feeds have no finite page height until you stop loading them. Virtualized lists also recycle DOM nodes, so earlier rows disappear as new ones arrive. No extension can reconstruct pixels that the page never keeps rendered. Capture defined sections, export the underlying data, or add application-level pagination for a reliable archive.
Build a custom Chrome capture extension
A custom extension is appropriate when a team needs a fixed selector, a redaction rule, a naming convention, or an internal destination. The relevant Chrome APIs include chrome.devtools.panels for a DevTools panel, chrome.pageCapture for saving a page, chrome.scripting for running code in a tab, and chrome.storage for preferences.
- Create a Manifest V3 extension with the smallest host permissions that cover your pages.
- Use chrome.scripting to add a class that hides confidential selectors or expands a target component.
- Wait for the page state you need, then request a screenshot through your chosen browser-automation or DevTools Protocol connection.
- Restore the page state and save the file with chrome.storage settings such as format, scale, and destination.
- Test logged-in pages, CSP restrictions, nested scrolling, and navigation races before deploying it to a team.
Do not confuse still-image capture with recording. Chrome’s official screen-capture documentation says that from Chrome 116 a service worker can call browser.tabCapture after a user gesture to obtain a stream ID. That user-gesture requirement applies to the documented recording-oriented flow; it does not make arbitrary background screenshot capture permissionless.

Troubleshooting checklist
The screenshot is blank
- Confirm the URL finished navigation and that the page is not a bot-check or CAPTCHA screen.
- Disable an ad blocker or test in a clean profile to identify an extension conflict.
- For an API job, inspect the response’s X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
The bottom of the page is missing
- Check whether the page uses an inner scroll container or virtualized list.
- Scroll the page once to trigger lazy loading, then recapture.
- Use a selector or node capture for the actual content panel.
The output is split or enormous
GoFullPage documents splitting pages that exceed Chrome’s one-image storage limit. Reduce the capture scope, capture sections, or export a PDF where that better matches the deliverable.
Content is covered by popups or chat

A batch job is unreliable

A sticky or fixed header remains rendered while the page is stitched. Capture the relevant node, hide the header temporarily, or use a selector-aware custom workflow.
Which extension handles multiple URLs?
FireShot’s listing explicitly describes URL-list capture and automatic capture of all tabs, alongside PDF, PNG, and JPEG export.
Are browser screenshots suitable for infinite-scroll archives?
Not reliably as one image. Infinite-scroll and virtualized interfaces may not retain earlier content in the DOM; capture bounded sections or use an application-level export instead.
