Chrome’s built-in Background graphics switch removes page backgrounds, but it does not promise to remove ordinary inline photos, logos, or charts. Always inspect print preview before printing or saving a PDF.
Choose the right method first
“Pictures” on a webpage can mean several different things: a background image, an inline photograph, a logo, an advertisement, or an entire page component. Chrome and Firefox expose different controls, so the best method depends on what you need to remove and whether preserving the original layout matters.

Print a webpage without pictures in Chrome
Use print preview and disable backgrounds
- Open the page you want to print.
- Open print preview with File → Print, press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or press Command+P on macOS.
- Choose your printer or Save to PDF as the destination.
- Expand More settings.
- Turn off Background graphics.
- Review every page in the preview, then select Print or Save.
This setting is intended for artwork applied as a page background. It may remove a full-page texture, colored panel, or CSS background image, but it should not be described as a switch that removes every visible picture. Inline photos, logos, product images and charts can remain.
When Chrome still shows individual images
Chrome does not provide a documented, universal “remove all inline images” option in print preview. If one or two specific elements are the problem, you can use a page-editing workflow before printing:

- Use a reader or simplified presentation offered by the site itself.
- Copy the text into a document and print that document.
- Use a reputable page-editing extension that supports image removal, after reviewing its current permissions and listing.
A third-party extension can edit more than Chrome’s built-in background switch, but it introduces another piece of software and access to website data. Install only what you trust, and remove it when you no longer need it.
Print a webpage without pictures in Firefox
Use Simplified format when it is offered
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Open the application menu and select Print….
- In print preview, expand More settings.
- Open Format and choose Simplified.
- Inspect the new preview. Firefox’s simplified presentation can strip clutter such as buttons, advertisements and background images.
- Select your printer or choose Save to PDF, then print or save.
Simplified format is a content presentation, not merely an image toggle. It can change spacing, typography and the order or appearance of page elements. That is useful for reading and conserving paper, but it may not preserve the original design.
If Simplified is missing
Firefox cannot create a simplified version for every page. If Format → Simplified does not appear, check whether the page supports Reader View. Turn Reader View on first, then print the resulting reading view. Pages with complex applications, frames, login gates or unusual scripts may not expose either option.
Keep the original layout but omit backgrounds
When you need the original formatting, leave the format as the normal page and use More settings → Print backgrounds to control background artwork. Firefox does not let you select this background control at the same time as Simplified. Choose one approach:

- Original format with Print backgrounds off: the page structure remains closer to what you see, while backgrounds are omitted.
Why print preview is essential
Websites commonly use separate print stylesheets. Columns can collapse, navigation can disappear, fonts can resize and content can move to another page. A page that looks correct on screen may therefore produce a different paper or PDF result.
- Scroll through every preview page.
- Check that headings are not stranded at the bottom of a page.
- Confirm that links, code and table rows are readable.
- Look for blank pages caused by wide elements or forced page breaks.
- Verify that the destination is the intended printer or PDF file.
Removing specific images before printing
If you must remove individual inline pictures rather than backgrounds, browser print settings alone may not be enough. Use the least invasive option that meets your goal:
- Site-provided reading mode: Use the page’s own Reader or print view when available.
- Firefox Reader View: Open the reading presentation, then print it.
- Copy and paste: Select the article text and paste without formatting into a document, then print.
- Page-editing extension: Choose an actively maintained tool that explicitly supports removing images or elements. Review website-data permissions before installing.
- Developer tools: For a one-off technical task, temporarily hide an element with CSS, refresh preview, and close the tools afterward. This requires familiarity with browser inspection and can break page layout.
Do not assume that hiding an image also removes the space reserved for it. A page may leave an empty box, alter its height after loading, or replace the image with a lazy-loaded version. Preview the output after every edit.
Troubleshooting
Background graphics is unavailable in Chrome
Open More settings in print preview and confirm that you are using Chrome’s system print dialog or preview for a normal webpage. On managed devices, an administrator policy can set or restrict the background-graphics default. If the control remains unavailable, save the page as PDF and edit the content in a document instead.

Pictures remain after Chrome’s switch is off
Those elements are probably inline images, replaced elements, logos or chart canvases rather than CSS backgrounds. Chrome’s documented control does not establish removal of those items. Use a reading view, copy the text, or a carefully reviewed editing extension.
Firefox does not show Simplified
The current page may not have a simplified representation. Try Reader View before printing. If Reader View is also unavailable, use the normal format and turn off Print backgrounds, or edit the page content with another method.
Simplified removes too much formatting
Return to the normal format. Then disable only Print backgrounds in Firefox, or disable Background graphics in Chrome. This preserves more of the original layout while removing background artwork.
The PDF has blank pages or clipped content
Check paper size, orientation, margins and scale in print settings. Very wide tables, fixed-width containers and forced page breaks can create extra pages. Use preview at the selected scale before saving.

A page requires a login or does not finish loading
Print only after the content is visible and authenticated in the browser. A timeout, bot check or script-dependent page may not produce a complete print result. If the page is unstable, copy the visible text into a local document and print that copy.

Cost, privacy and reliability considerations
- Local browser printing: Uses the page already open on your device and is appropriate for occasional personal documents.
- PDF output: Useful when you need a repeatable file, but verify fonts, page breaks and hidden backgrounds.
- Extensions: Offer finer element editing, at the cost of installation, maintenance and website-data permissions.
- Automated capture: An API is better for repeat jobs, batch URLs or CI workflows. Handle authentication, rate limits, page readiness and sensitive cookies carefully.
- Caching: Reusing a valid cached capture can reduce repeated work; choose a TTL that matches how often the source page changes.
Practical decision guide
- Need to remove only a colored or photographic page background? Use Chrome’s Background graphics switch or Firefox’s Print backgrounds control.
- Need a cleaner article with ads, controls and some background imagery removed? Try Firefox Simplified or Reader View.
- Need to remove selected inline photos or logos? Use a page-editing workflow and inspect permissions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Chrome print only the text of a page?
Chrome’s documented print preview offers a Background graphics control, not a guaranteed text-only mode. For text-only output, use a site reading view, copy the content into a document, or edit the page before printing.
Does Firefox Simplified work on every website?
No. Simplified appears only when Firefox can generate a simplified version for that page. Reader View is another option where supported.
Will turning off backgrounds remove a website’s logo?
Not necessarily. Logos and photos may be inline elements rather than CSS backgrounds, so they can remain in the preview.
