To hide images on a site you maintain, add print-specific CSS and check the result in print preview. If you do not control the site, try your browser’s simplified or reader mode; background-graphics settings can suppress backgrounds, but they do not remove every inline image. The right method depends on what you mean by “images” and which browser features the page supports.
First identify what you want to remove
A webpage can contain several kinds of visual content, and a single print setting or CSS selector may not affect them all:
- Inline images: typically HTML
<img>elements, sometimes wrapped in<picture>. - Background images: images applied through CSS to an element’s background.
- Other visual content: video, advertisements, popups, or graphics rendered by scripts.
Hiding one category does not necessarily remove the others. Decide whether you want to suppress just pictures, or turn a cluttered page into a text-focused printout. In either case, inspect the print preview: print rendering can differ from what you see on screen, and removing an element may leave awkward whitespace or affect the layout.
If you maintain the webpage: hide images with print CSS
The direct author-controlled method is a print media rule. Browsers apply styles inside @media print when rendering a page for paper or PDF. Add a rule like this to the site’s stylesheet:

}This targets those HTML elements in print output; it is an implementation example, not a guarantee for every site or browser. It does not necessarily suppress CSS background images or image-like content drawn by scripts. The !important declaration helps override competing styles, but it cannot target content that is not represented by these elements.
Check spacing and layout after hiding content
Removing an image can leave its containing element, padding, or reserved space in place. If the preview has large gaps, adjust the relevant print layout rules as well. For example, if a particular component contains an image and has no useful print content, you might hide that component with a site-specific selector. Avoid broad rules that hide a container if it also holds text, captions, or other information readers need.
Test representative pages, not just one URL. Images may be wrapped differently across page templates, and a selector that works for an article may not suit a product page or documentation page. Keep any screen styling separate from print styling so the change does not unexpectedly hide images for ordinary visitors.
Inspect the actual print or PDF rendering
Open the page’s print preview after adding the rule. Check whether the pictures are gone, whether text remains readable, and whether headings, captions, page breaks, and margins still make sense. A print stylesheet is a request to the browser’s print renderer; browser support for paged-media behavior is not perfectly uniform. MDN’s guidance on print CSS describes using @media to style documents for print or PDF.

If you do not control the page: use a reader or simplified format
A visitor generally cannot add a permanent print stylesheet to an arbitrary third-party page through the normal print dialog. Instead, look for a browser-provided simplified or reader view. It may remove page clutter and background images, but availability depends on the page.
Firefox: choose Simplified when it is offered
- Open the page and choose Print from the Firefox menu.
- Expand More settings.
- Under Format, choose Simplified if the option appears.
- Review the preview, then print or select a PDF destination if you want a file instead of paper.
Mozilla describes Simplified format as a way to print a less cluttered version, including removal of background images and other page elements. It is not available for every page; if the Format control is absent, the page may not provide a simplified version. Another option is to open Reader View from the address bar when it is available, then print that view. Firefox’s print panel also includes ordinary output controls such as orientation, paper size, scale, margins, headers and footers, and print backgrounds; exact labels can vary by version and platform.
Microsoft Edge: distinguish backgrounds from inline pictures
- Open Print from Settings and more, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
- Expand More settings.
- Use Background graphics to control whether webpage backgrounds are printed.
- For a less cluttered view, try Immersive Reader if the page supports it, and print from that view.
The Background graphics control concerns backgrounds; do not treat it as a switch for every inline <img>. Microsoft also documents Immersive Reader as a printing workaround, but it is not supported on every website.
Chrome and other browsers
Do not assume that a background-printing control removes inline images. Chrome Enterprise documentation about background-graphics policies addresses administrative defaults, not a general consumer control for removing all page pictures. Chrome for Developers discusses paged-media CSS, including @page, and notes that browser support for print-related features has varied. For an individual page, use the controls actually shown in your browser and verify the preview rather than expecting identical behavior across browsers.

Choose the method that matches the result you need

Troubleshooting: images remain or the printout looks wrong
Inline pictures remain after changing Background graphics
That setting controls backgrounds, not every inline picture. If you are just visiting the page, try a supported simplified or reader view. If you maintain the site, use a print stylesheet with selectors for the relevant elements, then inspect the preview.
The CSS rule hides some pictures but not all
Check how the remaining content is represented. A page may use a different element, a CSS background, or a script-rendered graphic rather than a plain <img>. Extend the print rule only after identifying the specific content and confirming that the selector will not hide useful text or controls. Preview more than one page template.
There is a large blank area where an image used to be
The surrounding layout may still reserve space. Adjust the relevant wrapper, dimensions, margins, or padding in print styles. Prefer a narrow, component-specific rule over hiding an entire section that contains captions or explanatory text.
Simplified or reader mode is missing
The page may not support that feature. Firefox’s Simplified format and Edge’s Immersive Reader are not guaranteed to appear for every website. Use the available print controls, or, if you maintain the page, provide and test an author-controlled print stylesheet.

The PDF or paper output differs from the screen
That is why preview matters. Review page breaks, scale, margins, orientation, headers and footers, and whether the text or images that should remain are present. Browser and platform versions can expose different controls; select a PDF destination in the print dialog when you want to inspect a file before printing it on paper.
