Reading modes remove much of the advertising, navigation and pop-up clutter that makes a direct printout difficult to read; preview settings prevent clipped text, oversized pages and missing backgrounds.
The reliable webpage-to-PDF workflow
- Open the page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox and wait for its text and images to finish loading.
- Use a reading or simplified view when the page is an article or documentation page. This removes distractions before they become part of the PDF.
- Open Print with Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on macOS. You can also use the browser menu’s Print command.
- Select a PDF destination. Firefox labels its destination Save to PDF; Chrome, Edge and some operating systems show Save as PDF or a similarly named PDF printer.
- Inspect the preview page by page. Check orientation, paper size, scale, margins, page range, headers and footers, and background graphics.
- Save with a descriptive filename, such as web-accessibility-guide-2026-09.pdf.
Do not rely on the on-screen appearance alone. Web pages can define a separate print layout, so the preview is where you catch missing columns, tiny text and cut-off edges.
Make an article readable before printing
Why simplification matters
Printing the original page often includes navigation bars, advertisements, newsletter forms, cookie notices and chat controls. A reading view keeps the article’s main text and images in a narrower, calmer layout. It also gives you controls for font size, typeface, color theme, line spacing or column width in browsers that support them.
When to keep the original page
Reading views are designed for article-like pages, not every type of web application. Image galleries, interactive maps, forms, quizzes, payment screens and login pages may be incomplete or unavailable in a simplified view. If the page is an application rather than a document, print the original page and select only the useful pages instead.

Google Chrome: Reading mode, then Save as PDF
Open Reading mode
On a supported desktop page, right-click and choose Open in reading mode, or use the Reading mode button in the address bar. Chrome also lists ⌘ + Option + R on macOS and Alt + Shift + R on Windows, Linux and ChromeOS. Reading mode provides controls for typeface, font size, color theme, line spacing and letter spacing; desktop users can also have the text read aloud.
Chrome warns that Reading mode is not available on all websites. If the command is absent or the result omits important content, return to the original tab and use the normal print path.
Print the cleaned page
- With the reading view open, press Ctrl+P or Command+P.
- Choose the PDF or Save as PDF destination shown in the print dialog.
- Choose Portrait for a normal article column. Use Landscape only when the page contains wide tables or diagrams.
- Set a paper size appropriate to your region, such as A4 or Letter.
- Adjust scale until the preview shows complete lines without making the body text uncomfortably small.
- Turn headers and footers off when they add browser metadata. Leave them on when the page URL, title or date is useful for citation.
- Enable background graphics only when a background color, chart or image carries meaning that disappears in the preview.
- Save the PDF and open it in a PDF reader to verify the first, middle and last pages.
Microsoft Edge: Immersive Reader or Reading mode
Clean the page
On supported pages, select the Immersive Reader icon in the address bar or press F9. Edge’s Reading mode hides distracting pop-ups and buttons and offers controls for font, font size, column width and theme. Microsoft describes its clutter-free print option as removing surrounding material such as ads and site navigation. Immersive Reader may not be available for every website.
Print and correct the layout
- Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS, or choose Print from the menu or context menu.
- Select the PDF destination offered by your system.
- Set orientation, paper size, page range, scale and margins while watching the preview.
- Use portrait for prose and landscape for wide tables.
- Decide whether headers, footers and background graphics belong in the document.
- Save, then reopen the file to confirm that headings, images and page breaks are intact.
Mozilla Firefox: Simplified format in Print preview
Try Simplified format
Firefox can expose a Simplified format in its print preview when the page supports it. This removes much of the surrounding interface while retaining the printable article. If Simplified is unavailable, print the original page and compensate with page range, margins and scale.

Save to PDF
- Press Ctrl+P or Command+P.
- Set the destination to Save to PDF.
- Choose orientation, the pages to include and color mode.
- Expand the additional settings for paper size, scale, pages per sheet, margins, headers, footers and backgrounds.
- Select Simplified when it is offered, inspect every page in the preview and save.
Firefox’s preview is especially important because a webpage can deliberately format itself differently on paper than on screen.
Print-preview settings that determine readability
Orientation and paper size
Portrait suits most articles because it preserves a readable line length. Landscape gives wide tables, code samples and comparison charts more horizontal room. Choose the paper size your recipient will actually use; an A4 document printed on Letter paper can reflow and add pages.
Scale and margins
If the right edge is cut off, reduce the scale, reduce margins or switch to landscape. If the text is tiny, increase the scale only after removing unnecessary margins and switching to a simplified view. Check the preview after each change rather than guessing from the page count.
Page range and pages per sheet
Use a page range to omit navigation, legal notices or unrelated appendices that remain on the original page. Pages-per-sheet saves paper but is usually a poor choice for a document intended for comfortable reading.

Headers, footers and backgrounds
Headers and footers can add the URL, title and date, which helps document provenance, but they also consume vertical space. Background graphics can preserve meaningful diagrams or color coding; otherwise disabling them reduces visual noise and ink use.
What a browser PDF can and cannot preserve
Usually preserved
- Static text, headings, lists and most loaded images.
- The print CSS layout selected by the website.
- The selected page range, paper size, margins and orientation.
Often lost or altered
- Video playback, animated elements and live data.
- Interactive maps, forms, quizzes and controls that require a click.
- Content behind a login or payment screen.
- Lazy-loaded images that never appeared before printing.
For interactive material, describe the limitation to readers of the PDF or include a link back to the live page. A browser-generated PDF also does not automatically guarantee tagged-PDF or PDF/UA accessibility conformance.
Troubleshooting: fix the common failures
Ads, menus, cookie banners or chat widgets appear
Reopen the page in Chrome Reading mode or Edge Immersive Reader. In Firefox, look for Simplified format in Print preview. If none is available, print the original page, turn off headers and footers, reduce the page range and use the preview to exclude clutter.
The text is too small
Increase the reading-view font size and line spacing first. Then raise print scale while checking that the line endings still fit. Avoid shrinking several pages onto one sheet.

The right edge or a table is clipped
Switch to landscape, reduce scale, choose a wider paper size or reduce margins. If only one table is too wide, select that page range and print it separately in landscape.
Colors or images disappear
Enable background graphics and confirm that the image actually loaded before opening Print. Some pages use background images for meaning; others use them only for decoration.
Reading mode is missing or incomplete
That is a site or format limitation, not necessarily a browser fault. Use the original-page print route, select only the needed pages and correct scale and margins manually.
Interactive content is blank
Print captures a static state. Forms, maps, video, login interfaces and payment screens may not convert into a useful document. Save the static text and images that do print, and provide the live URL for the interactive portion.

The PDF has unexpected page breaks
Preview after changing scale, margins or orientation. A website’s print CSS may force a heading, image or table onto a new page. Selecting a smaller page range can also remove an awkward break caused by unrelated content.

- The main article is visible and the page has finished loading.
- A reading or simplified view was used when it supported the page.
- Orientation matches the content: portrait for prose, landscape for wide material.
- Scale, margins and paper size show complete lines in the preview.
- Headers, footers and backgrounds are intentionally enabled or disabled.
- The page range excludes clutter and unrelated sections.
