Short answer: Instagram location scraping means automatically collecting posts, metadata, or other content associated with a place label or location-based discovery surface. You should not assume that publicly visible posts may be copied in bulk, and you should not build a workflow that bypasses login, rate limits, CAPTCHAs, or other controls. Historical location-index access in Instagram’s API was discontinued, so there is no verified current location endpoint to build against here. For a legitimate project, first confirm a currently documented, authorized Meta integration; otherwise use a smaller, manual or consent-based dataset and apply strict privacy controls.
What “Instagram location scraping” actually means
In ordinary usage, the phrase covers automated collection of Instagram material connected to a place. That can include:
- Posts carrying a place label, such as a venue, neighborhood, or city.
- Captions, timestamps, usernames, media URLs, and engagement fields attached to those posts.
- Results shown by a location search or map-like discovery surface.
- Public profile or hashtag information collected to infer where activity occurred.
This is a description of a task, not proof that Instagram currently exposes a supported API for it. Meta defines scraping as automated collection from a site or interface. It distinguishes authorized collection, such as a search engine’s permitted crawling, from unauthorized automation that violates its terms. A page being visible in a browser therefore does not establish permission for bulk collection.
Can you scrape Instagram posts by location today?
There are three materially different answers, depending on the access method.

Official, authorized access
Use only an integration that Meta currently documents for your account type, app review status, region, and intended data. The historical geographic-location index in Instagram’s API was reportedly removed, and a service relying on it ended its Instagram collection. That historical change does not prove that every location-related feature is unavailable now, but it does mean an old tutorial or SDK example is not a reliable specification. Check the current Meta developer documentation and platform terms before writing code.
Browser or app automation
Automating a logged-in browser to search locations, scrolling pages, or replaying private endpoints can violate platform rules. Do not rotate accounts, disguise bots, defeat CAPTCHAs, evade rate limits, or use stolen sessions. Those techniques create security and privacy risks and are not a compliant substitute for an official integration.
Manual or consent-based collection
For a small research project, a person can record links or export information they are authorized to use. For a customer’s own account or campaign, obtain written permission and define exactly which fields may be retained. This approach is slower but gives you a defensible purpose and a clear deletion path.
What Meta’s enforcement history tells you
Public visibility has not stopped enforcement. Meta described a 2020 case involving automated collection from more than 100,000 Instagram accounts, and a separate 2022 account of the MyStalk case involving profiles of over 350,000 users. These are case-specific counts, not estimates of how common scraping is. In a 2021 report, Meta said it blocked billions of suspected scraping actions per day across Facebook and Instagram; that is Meta’s historical reported figure, not an independently verified current rate.

Meta’s enforcement director has written that data scraping undermines people’s privacy and control of their information and is prohibited by its terms. Treat those statements as a practical warning: a technically reachable page can still be off-limits for automated harvesting.
A compliant decision framework

How to plan an authorized location-data project
- Write the purpose. State whether you are measuring campaign performance, managing a venue’s own posts, or conducting approved academic research. “Collect everything” is not a purpose.
- Confirm the source. Record the exact Meta product, documentation page, app permissions, account role, and date you verified them. If location indexing is not documented, do not promise it to stakeholders.
- Define a minimum schema. Prefer a post ID, coarse place category, collection time, and aggregate counts. Avoid storing full captions, faces, contact details, or precise coordinates unless essential.
- Set retention and deletion. Choose an expiry period before collection begins. Keep a deletion queue for takedown requests and remove derived files, caches, and backups consistently.
- Secure access. Keep tokens in a secret manager, restrict staff access, encrypt exports, and log who accessed the dataset. Never place credentials in client-side JavaScript or a public repository.
- Review geography and law. Meta’s US privacy notice treats location-related information as personal information and identifies precise geolocation as sensitive personal information subject to its stated limitations. That is a US-specific notice, not a complete legal rule worldwide. Consult counsel about the jurisdictions of the people and places involved.
Safer alternatives when no supported endpoint exists
Use first-party analytics
If you manage the relevant Instagram account, use the analytics and exports available to that account instead of copying other people’s posts. Keep the export within the permissions and retention terms shown in the product.
Ask for a partner feed
A venue, creator, or campaign partner can provide selected links or media with documented permission. Record the grant, allowed uses, attribution requirements, and end date.
Analyze aggregates
For footfall or campaign research, combine consented surveys, your own booking data, and coarse regional statistics rather than constructing an identifiable history of people’s movements.

Capture a page for documentation, not harvesting
If your authorized workflow needs a visual record of a public page, capture the page image and retain it for the narrow documentation purpose. A screenshot is not a license to extract every username, caption, or image from the page.

“The old location endpoint returns an error”
Assume the tutorial is obsolete. Re-check current Meta documentation, app permissions, and product availability. Do not substitute an undocumented private endpoint.

“The page asks for login or a challenge”
Stop automation. A challenge is an access control, not a prompt to add stealth, proxies, or account rotation. Use an authorized export or request access from the owner.
“Results contain precise locations or identifiable people”
Pause collection, remove unnecessary fields, aggregate geography, and shorten retention. Revisit the legal basis and deletion process before continuing.

For an authorized capture, wait for a selector or network idle, use full-page mode, and inspect the returned verdict and billing headers. A failed load should be discarded rather than repeatedly retried against a protected page.

What a responsible result should contain
- The verified source and authorization basis.
- The collection date, geographic scope, and fields retained.
- Known gaps, including locations or account types not covered by the documented source.
- Retention, deletion, and access-control details.
- A statement that public visibility was not treated as blanket permission.
