It is not the database engine itself: installing SSMS gives you the management application, while SQL Server, Azure SQL, Synapse, or Fabric provides the server-side service. As of September 29, 2026, SSMS 22 is the current general-availability major release and version 22.10.1 is the latest release listed by Microsoft.
This guide explains what SSMS does, which services and versions it supports, how to install and update it, the workflows you will use every day, how it compares with Visual Studio Code after Azure Data Studio’s retirement, and how to troubleshoot common connection and performance problems.
What SSMS is—and what it is not
SSMS combines connection management, Object Explorer, query editing, database design, scripting, security administration, monitoring, and performance tools in one Windows application. Microsoft’s overview covers tasks such as securely connecting, managing objects, running queries, tuning workloads, and administering business-intelligence components. See the official SSMS overview.
SSMS does not install a SQL Server Database Engine automatically. The client runs on your workstation; the engine may run locally, on another Windows or Linux host, in Azure, or as another supported cloud service. You need valid network access and credentials for the target service, plus any required driver, firewall, VPN, or private-endpoint configuration.

Current release and supported services in 2026
Microsoft identifies SSMS 22 as the latest generally available major version. The release notes list SSMS 22.10.1, released September 15, 2026. That update refreshed a Visual Studio component and fixed connection failures affecting Database Engine Tuning Advisor, SQL Monitor, and SQL Server Profiler.
SSMS 22 is documented as compatible with SQL Server 2014 (12.x) and later. Microsoft also lists these services:
- Azure SQL Database
- Azure SQL Managed Instance
- Azure Synapse Analytics
- SQL database in Microsoft Fabric
Compatibility with the engine does not guarantee that every tool, feature, or legacy service component behaves identically. For older deployments, verify the specific feature’s version documentation and test administrative workflows before upgrading a production workstation.
Installing SSMS 22
SSMS 22 is delivered through a Visual Studio Installer bootstrapper named vs_SSMS.exe; Microsoft’s current installation page says there is no standalone MSI. Use the installation guide for the current download link, command-line switches, and offline layout instructions.
- Prepare Windows. Apply pending Windows updates, confirm that you have administrator rights for the initial installation, and restart if another installation is waiting for a reboot. Check Microsoft’s system requirements for the Windows edition and hardware requirements applicable to your release.
- Run the bootstrapper. Download and launch
vs_SSMS.exe. Visual Studio Installer opens and retrieves the SSMS package. - Select components. Choose the workloads or individual components your role needs. Do not assume every optional feature is installed by default; review the component selector and feature documentation.
- Install. Accept the license terms, start setup, and allow the installer to elevate when prompted. A restart may be requested.
- Verify. Open SSMS from the Start menu and select Help > About to confirm the installed version.
Microsoft supports side-by-side installation of versions, which is useful when validating a new release against older server estates. Updates for SSMS 22 are delivered through Visual Studio Installer. For locked-down environments, create an offline layout using Microsoft’s documented command-line process, transfer it to the target network, and apply updates through the same servicing mechanism.
Connecting to a SQL Server or Azure service
- Open SSMS and wait for the Connect to Server dialog.
- Choose the correct Server type, normally Database Engine.
- Enter the server and instance name. A default instance commonly uses a host name; a named instance uses the form
HOSTINSTANCE. For Azure services, enter the server name supplied by the portal. - Select an Authentication method supported by the server: Windows authentication, SQL Server authentication, or an applicable Microsoft Entra method.
- Supply credentials, optionally enable Encrypt connection and certificate validation settings required by your organization, then select Connect.
After a successful connection, Object Explorer shows databases, security, server objects, and management nodes allowed by your permissions. If the dialog remembers an old server, use the drop-down history carefully; saved credentials and cached names can point to the wrong environment.
Core SSMS workflows
Object Explorer and designers
Expand a database to inspect tables, views, programmable objects, security, storage, and database diagrams where available. Right-click an object for tasks such as scripting, altering, generating dependencies, or opening a designer. Prefer scripted, reviewed changes for production rather than relying exclusively on graphical designers.
Query Editor
Select New Query, choose the target database, and execute with F5 or Execute. Use explicit transactions for multi-step changes, set an appropriate database context, and save scripts in source control. Results can be returned as a grid, text, or a file; the status bar reports messages, elapsed time, and row counts.

Scripting and deployment
Object Explorer’s Script as commands generate CREATE, ALTER, INSERT, or permission statements. Review generated scripts for environment-specific names, secrets, and destructive operations. For repeatable deployment, keep scripts or database projects in a repository and run them through your team’s approved CI/CD process.
Execution plans and tuning
Enable an actual execution plan with Ctrl+M before running a query, or view an estimated plan with Ctrl+L. Inspect scans, joins, warnings, cardinality estimates, and missing-index suggestions as evidence—not as automatic prescriptions. SSMS also exposes Database Engine Tuning Advisor, SQL Monitor, and SQL Server Profiler where the relevant components and permissions are installed.
Administration and monitoring
Use the Management node for jobs, maintenance plans, backups, policies, logs, and activity monitoring. SQL Server Agent administration requires the appropriate server edition, Agent service, and permissions. Microsoft positions SSMS for full administration, including SQL Server Agent; it is more than a query editor.
Source control, terminal, and appearance
Current feature documentation covers Git integration, an integrated terminal, dark mode, and newer data-type support. SSMS 21 release notes describe repository creation and cloning plus branch management. Availability can depend on the selected components, so confirm installation in Visual Studio Installer. GitHub Copilot in SSMS and Query Hint Recommendation Tool are identified by Microsoft as preview features; treat preview output as assistive and review it before execution.

SSMS versus Visual Studio Code after Azure Data Studio
Azure Data Studio retired on February 28, 2026. Microsoft says it no longer receives updates, security fixes, or maintenance and recommends Visual Studio Code with the MSSQL extension for continued support. Read the retirement and migration guidance.
| Need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Full SQL Server administration | SSMS | Deep server management, maintenance, security, monitoring, and SQL Server Agent workflows. |
| Existing Azure Data Studio queries, scripts, or projects | Visual Studio Code with MSSQL | Microsoft says these work without conversion and recommends this path for continued support. |
| Source-control-centric development and CI/CD | Visual Studio Code with MSSQL, or SSMS with Git components | Choose based on repository, extension, and deployment conventions. |
| Cloud query work with limited administration | Either, after checking service support | Match the tool to required Azure, Synapse, or Fabric features. |
Keep both clients when practical: use Visual Studio Code for lightweight, repository-oriented development and SSMS for administration and operational tooling.

“Cannot connect to server”
- Confirm the host, instance, and port; test name resolution and network reachability.
- For a named instance, verify SQL Server Browser or use an explicit port.
- Check that the Database Engine service is running and the firewall permits the connection.
- Verify authentication mode, account lockout, password expiry, and database permissions.
Certificate or encryption errors
Modern SQL Server connections may require encryption. Install the issuing certificate chain on the client, use the server name matching the certificate, and follow your organization’s validation policy. Do not disable certificate validation as a routine fix; use any trust option only when your security team explicitly permits it.
Login succeeds but objects are missing
Object Explorer reflects your permissions and selected database context. Refresh the node, confirm you connected to the intended server, and ask an administrator for the minimum required roles rather than granting broad server privileges.

Queries are slow or appear frozen
Check the Messages tab, execution plan, blocking sessions, waits, locks, and resource saturation. A slow client display can also result from returning millions of rows. Filter results, test with an appropriate transaction scope, and avoid changing indexes or hints solely from a single plan warning.
Tools fail after an update
Record the SSMS version, error text, server version, and failing component. Update through Visual Studio Installer and review the release notes. Version 22.10.1 specifically addressed connection failures in Database Engine Tuning Advisor, SQL Monitor, and SQL Server Profiler.
Performance, reliability, and operating practices
- Use separate registered server groups or connection profiles for development, test, and production, and verify the environment banner before destructive commands.
- Prefer least-privilege accounts and audited changes. Store secrets in approved credential managers rather than scripts.
- Save query files in source control, include database context and expected results, and use transactions for reversible tests.
- Capture execution plans and timing under representative data volumes; client timing alone does not explain server waits.
- Keep SSMS patched, but validate optional components and legacy-service workflows before broad rollout.
- For remote or high-latency environments, return only needed columns and rows and avoid repeatedly expanding large Object Explorer trees.
