Windows screenshot shortcuts at a glance
These shortcuts cover the normal image-capture jobs without installing software. Microsoft documents the mappings for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its Windows keyboard-shortcut reference and Snipping Tool guide.

Choose based on two questions: do you need a region, window or whole display, and should the result be copied, saved as an image or recorded as video?
Capture a selected area with Snipping Tool
- Press Windows+Shift+S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool toolbar appears.
- Choose a mode: rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip or full-screen snip.
- Drag around the region, click a window, or select the full-screen option. For a freeform snip, draw the outline you need.
- Use the notification that appears to open the capture in Snipping Tool. From there you can annotate, crop, copy, save or share it.
Snipping Tool also supports delayed captures, which are useful for menus or tooltips that disappear when you press a key. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu, set the delay, choose New, and then stage the screen before the countdown ends. The available controls and save behavior can depend on your Windows and Snipping Tool version or settings.

When to use each image mode
- Rectangular: best for a clean, predictable area such as a dialog or chart.
- Freeform: traces an irregular shape when a rectangle would include distracting content.
- Window: captures one application window without manually aligning its edges.
- Full screen: captures every visible display area included by the tool.
Save or copy a full-screen screenshot
Save directly to a file
Press Windows+Print Screen. Windows saves the image under your user profile in PicturesScreenshots. Open File Explorer and choose Pictures, then Screenshots. If OneDrive is backing up your Pictures folder, the path may appear inside the OneDrive folder instead.
Copy the full display
Press Print Screen (also labeled PrtSc or PrtScn). Nothing may appear to happen because the image is on the clipboard. Open Paint, Word, an email or another image-aware app and press Ctrl+V; then save or edit the pasted image.
Copy only the active window
Click the window you want, then press Alt+Print Screen. The shortcut copies that focused window rather than the entire desktop. Paste it with Ctrl+V and save it from the destination application.
Edit, mark up and share the capture
Opening the notification after a Snipping Tool capture gives you a working copy. Its documented tools include pen or highlighter annotation, cropping, copying, saving and sharing. Some versions also provide text actions for extracting or working with text visible in the image. Crop before sharing if the screenshot contains account details, notifications or unrelated browser tabs.

For a simple file, use Save as and select the available image format and destination. For a quick hand-off, use Copy and paste into the destination instead of creating a permanent file. Treat clipboard captures as temporary: another copy operation can replace them.
Record a video instead of taking a still image
On supported Windows versions, press Windows+Shift+R or open Snipping Tool and choose Record. Select New, drag around the area to record, start the recording, and stop it when finished. Snipping Tool lets you save the result and may offer editing in Clipchamp. Video capture availability, controls and output behavior vary by Windows and application version.
Keyboard and laptop caveats
The Print Screen key can be printed as PrtSc, PrtScn or Print Screen, and its position differs by keyboard. Some laptops require holding Fn at the same time. On devices without a dedicated Print Screen key, Microsoft documents Fn+Windows+Spacebar as an alternative in its Print Screen keyboard-shortcut article.
Windows can also be configured so pressing Print Screen opens screen snipping instead of silently copying the whole display. If a shortcut behaves differently from the table, check Settings and the keyboard manufacturer’s function-layer settings. Applications can intercept or change shortcut behavior, so test the command on the desktop if it fails inside one program.

Troubleshoot a screenshot that did not work
Nothing appears after pressing Print Screen
The capture may be on the clipboard rather than saved. Open Paint or another document and press Ctrl+V. If that fails, try Windows+Shift+S and use the Snipping Tool notification.
The Windows-plus-Print-Screen shortcut does not create a file
Check PicturesScreenshots, including the equivalent OneDrive location if folder backup is enabled. Confirm that the Windows key and Print Screen key are both registering; on some laptops, add Fn. A corporate policy or customized keyboard utility can also alter the action.
The wrong window is captured
Click the target window so it has focus before using Alt+Print Screen. For a resizable or borderless application, use Windows+Shift+S and select the area manually.
A menu closes before it can be captured
Use Snipping Tool’s delay setting. Start the delayed snip, open the menu, and let the countdown finish. If the control is unavailable, your installed Snipping Tool build may not expose delayed capture.

The shortcut is blocked in one application
Some secure, remote or full-screen applications restrict capture, and some programs reserve the same key combination. Try the shortcut on the desktop, use the application’s own export command where appropriate, or capture a permitted region with Snipping Tool. Do not attempt to bypass content-protection controls.
Choose a workflow that fits the job
- Fast annotation or support ticket: use Windows+Shift+S, mark the relevant area and paste it.
- Repeated full-screen evidence: use Windows+Print Screen so each file is stored automatically.
- One application only: focus it and use Alt+Print Screen.
- Menus, hover states or timed changes: open Snipping Tool and set a delay.
- Demonstrating a process: use the video snip shortcut when your Windows version supports it.

Why does a screenshot look different on a high-DPI display?
Windows and the application may apply display scaling, so the captured pixel dimensions can differ from the logical size you see. Check the image’s properties after saving and crop or resize it in an editor if a fixed output size is required.
Can these shortcuts capture a web page longer than the screen?
No. The built-in shortcuts capture the visible desktop or a selected region. A full-page web capture requires a browser feature, extension or a web screenshot service such as ScreenshotNeo.

Do screenshots include the mouse pointer?
The standard Windows shortcuts generally capture the screen image rather than a visible pointer. If the pointer itself is important, use a recording or an application-specific capture feature that supports cursor display.
