Check the live page first, then test the browser state, wait for page-specific content, and verify that your capture includes the content you expect. The steps below separate those cases so you can fix the right problem instead of repeatedly taking the same empty image.
Start by identifying which thing is blank
Open the URL normally and wait for it to settle. If the page is blank in the browser, troubleshoot the site, connection, and browser. If the page looks correct but the saved PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF is empty, focus on capture timing, scrolling, viewport selection, and the rendering environment.
- Blank in the browser and in the screenshot: the page may not have loaded, JavaScript may be blocked, or an extension, privacy setting, graphics problem, or site failure may be interfering.
- Normal in the browser, blank only in the screenshot: the capture likely ran too early, captured the wrong area, missed lazy content, or used a different browser or host environment.
- Only one component is blank: investigate that component’s data request, iframe or canvas, rather than treating the whole page as broken.
Take a second screenshot after the page is visibly stable. A change between the two captures is strong evidence of a readiness or timing problem.
When the live webpage is blank or broken
Reload and check the connection
Reload once, confirm that other sites open, and try the URL without a trailing fragment or query string if one is present. Chrome’s basic guidance for pages that fail to load starts with reloading and checking the connection. If the page is intermittently empty, record whether a hard reload changes the result; intermittent behavior often points to a failed request or a race in the site’s startup code.

Use a private window as a controlled test
Open the same address in an Incognito or private-browsing window. A private window usually starts without your normal extensions and with a cleaner site-data state. If the page works there, the cause is probably cached data, a cookie, or an extension rather than the URL itself.
Clear site data, then test extensions
Clear data for the affected domain rather than wiping every saved login. In Chrome, open the site, select the tune or lock icon beside the address, open site settings, and clear stored data. In Firefox, use Settings, Privacy & Security, Cookies and Site Data, Manage Data, then remove the domain. Reopen the page afterward.
Disable extensions one at a time, beginning with ad blockers, script blockers, privacy tools, translation tools, and appearance customizers. Reload after each change. Once you identify the conflict, re-enable unrelated extensions and decide whether the offending one should remain disabled for that site.
Check JavaScript and tracking protection
Many modern applications render an almost empty document until JavaScript runs. Verify that JavaScript is allowed for the domain. Firefox users should also test Enhanced Tracking Protection for the affected site: select the shield icon and temporarily turn protection off for that site, then reload. If the page appears, the site may depend on a script or storage request that the protection blocked. Restore protection after testing and look for a narrower site exception where possible.
Inspect graphics and browser configuration
If the problem occurs only in one browser, test another current browser. When only Firefox is affected, modified preferences, graphics settings, or hardware acceleration can be relevant. A temporary test with hardware acceleration changed can show whether the issue is graphics-related; keep the setting that is appropriate for your system after testing. Browser console errors and failed network requests can identify the exact script or resource that did not load.
Decide whether the site is the cause
Try the URL in two browsers and, if practical, on another network. If several browsers show the same blank page while unrelated sites work, the site or its server-side dependencies are the likely cause. A screenshot tool cannot repair a page that never produced content; capture the error details and contact the site owner.

Do not treat the load event as “visually ready”
The browser’s load event means the initial document and its referenced resources reached a lifecycle point. It does not guarantee that an application has finished fetching data, hydrating components, or drawing charts. Playwright’s guidance notes that modern pages can continue loading and rendering after load.
Wait for a condition that represents the content you need: a dashboard heading, a table row, a chart container, or an application-specific “ready” marker. A fixed delay can help with a quick diagnosis, but a selector or text condition is more reliable because it adapts to fast and slow responses.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Wait for a meaningful selector in Playwright
For a local browser capture, this minimal Playwright example opens a page, waits for a visible element, and saves a full-page image:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com/dashboard', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.locator('[data-testid="dashboard-ready"]').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 30000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'dashboard.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
Replace the selector with an element that appears only after the required content is ready. If no stable marker exists, wait for a visible heading or a specific piece of text, then add a short delay for animations or chart drawing.
Bring lazy-loaded content into view
Images, cards, and embeds that are below the fold may not request their data until they approach the viewport. Google’s lazy-loading guidance recommends loading content when it enters the viewport and avoiding lazy loading for content likely to be immediately visible. For a capture, scroll through the page before taking the image:
await page.goto('https://example.com/article', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.evaluate(async () => {
await new Promise(resolve => {
let y = 0;
const step = 600;
const timer = setInterval(() => {
window.scrollBy(0, step);
y += step;
if (y >= document.body.scrollHeight) {
clearInterval(timer);
resolve();
}
}, 100);
});
});
await page.waitForTimeout(500);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'article.png', fullPage: true });
Use the tool’s full-page option when you need the entire scrollable document. A normal screenshot generally captures only the current viewport, so a blank-looking top region does not prove that lower content is missing.

Check the capture target
Confirm whether your tool is capturing the viewport, the full page, or a selected element. A CSS selector that matches a hidden template, an iframe, or an element with zero height can produce an empty image even though the visible page is fine. Log the element’s bounding box and visibility before capture, and capture the whole page once as a diagnostic.
Investigate canvas and cross-origin images
A canvas that draws remote images can become “tainted.” MDN documents that reading pixel data from a tainted canvas can throw a SecurityError. This is a narrower developer case, not a universal explanation for blank screenshots. Inspect the browser console and ask the site owner to configure the image’s cross-origin response and the canvas request correctly. A screenshot service cannot override the browser’s same-origin security model.
Why a brief white image can appear
Chrome Developers describes “paint holding” as a browser behavior intended to reduce a flash of white during same-origin navigation: “This is the brief moment during which the browser shows a white paint while loading a page.” If automation captures during that interval, the saved image can contain the temporary white paint rather than the final document. Waiting for a page-specific signal avoids confusing that transition with a permanently blank site.
Make automated captures reproducible
Keep the rendering environment consistent
Playwright lists operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as factors that can affect rendering. Pin the browser version used for visual tests, use the same viewport and device scale factor, and avoid comparing a laptop capture with a container capture without accounting for font, GPU, and color differences.
Record what happened
For each failed capture, save the URL, timestamp, viewport, browser version, whether the run was headless, the final HTTP status, console errors, and a short trace or network log. A screenshot of the page immediately before capture is useful: it distinguishes a renderer that saw a blank page from a file-writing or post-processing problem.
Separate network failure from rendering failure
Check whether the document request succeeded and whether API calls returned data. A 200 response can still contain an application error, while a blocked API request can leave a valid but empty shell. Wait for the data-dependent element, not merely for a successful document response.

A practical decision tree
- Open the URL normally and wait. If it is blank, follow the browser troubleshooting steps.
- Test a private window. If it works there, clear site data or isolate an extension.
- Test another browser. If only one fails, inspect that browser’s settings and graphics path.
- If the live page is normal, capture after a visible selector or text signal appears.
- Scroll to trigger lazy content and choose full-page capture when appropriate.
- Capture the viewport and the full page once each to rule out a target mismatch.
- For canvas-only failures, inspect cross-origin errors rather than adding arbitrary delays.
- Keep browser, operating system, viewport, scale, and headless settings consistent for repeatable tests.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, while its capture flow accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Each step can be turned off.
Use the API with the options that match your failure mode: full-page capture loads lazy images; wait for a selector, delay, or network idle; click an element before capture; set a viewport or device preset; use custom CSS or JavaScript; block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types; supply cookies, headers, a user agent, or Authorization; set timezone and geolocation; and choose image, PDF, or transparent output. ScreenshotNeo also supports element capture, dark mode, retina scale, resizing, caching with a chosen TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work for easier migration.

Common errors and fixes
The page is still blank after a long wait
Check the live page in a private window and another browser. If every browser is blank, inspect the site’s server and API dependencies. If only automation is blank, compare its user agent, cookies, viewport, and JavaScript permissions with a normal browser.
The screenshot is white but the page flashes briefly on screen
The capture is probably occurring during navigation or paint holding. Replace an immediate screenshot with a wait for a visible, page-specific selector and confirm that animations or redirects have finished.

Images are missing while text is present

Only a chart or canvas is empty
Inspect console errors and cross-origin headers. A delay will not fix a canvas that cannot legally expose pixel data; the site’s image and canvas configuration must be corrected.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I increase the screenshot delay first?
Use a content-specific selector or ready signal first. A delay is useful for diagnosing animation or rendering races, but it is less reliable than waiting for the element the screenshot actually needs.
Why is only the top of my full-page screenshot empty?
The capture may have started before the page initialized, or the tool may be showing a viewport capture rather than a full-page image. Wait for the page’s ready element, scroll to trigger lazy content, and verify the full-page option.
Can a screenshot API fix a broken website?
No. If the live page fails in normal browsers, the site, connection, script, or browser state needs repair. An API can improve waiting, scrolling, cleanup, and diagnostics when the page itself can render.
