The most reliable way to improve a blurry screenshot is to capture it again at the size you actually need. Select the relevant screen, window, or region; enlarge the interface before capturing if text is small; keep a suitable format; then crop and annotate a copy. Upscaling can make an existing file larger or somewhat sharper, but it cannot reliably restore pixels that were never recorded.
Start by identifying what is wrong
“Low quality” can mean several different failures. The remedy depends on which one you have:
- Too small: the original capture contains too few pixels for the document, display, or print size.
- Soft after sharing: a messaging, email, social, or document app may have resized or recompressed the file.
- Pixelated when enlarged: the image was scaled beyond its recorded detail.
- Unreadable text: the page or interface was too small at capture time, even if the file dimensions look large.
- Different colors or highlights: an HDR image may be viewed on an SDR display or converted by the destination.
Open the original file first. If it is already sharp at 100% zoom, export or sharing is the likely problem; send the original file or disable the destination app’s image-compression option. If it is blurry at 100%, recapture whenever possible.
Recapture at a useful size
Prepare the screen
- Open the exact page, dialog, or application state you need.
- Increase browser zoom or interface text size until labels are readable without relying on later enlargement.
- Close unrelated windows and move the pointer away from important content.
- Choose a region that includes the evidence but excludes empty margins and personal information.
Capturing only the needed region gives that content more pixels than taking a small window and enlarging it later. For documentation, capture the complete sequence of controls rather than a cropped fragment that omits context.

Mac capture choices
Apple documents these shortcuts:
- Shift-Command-3: capture the whole screen.
- Shift-Command-4: drag a precise selection.
- Shift-Command-4, then Space: capture a window or menu.
- Shift-Command-5: open the Screenshot app on macOS Mojave 10.14 and later.
On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple’s Screenshot app can offer SDR (PNG) or HDR (HEIF). Choose PNG for ordinary SDR workflows and broad compatibility. HDR HEIF is appropriate only when the destination and viewing display handle HDR; otherwise the image can be shown as SDR and may not look as intended. Some applications, including Apple TV, may prevent screenshots of their windows.
iPhone capture choices
Apple places Screen Capture options at Settings > General > Screen Capture. In the documented workflow, SDR screenshots use PNG and are intended for most computer displays and mobile devices. HDR screenshots use HEIF and need an HDR display to show their full range; on a standard display they may appear in SDR. Select the mode that matches where the image will be viewed, not merely the mode with the largest-sounding specification.
Windows, Android, and Linux
Shortcut names and output controls vary by Windows release, Linux desktop, Android version, and device manufacturer. Use the current built-in capture utility for your platform, and prefer a selectable region or window over a compressed camera photo of the screen. Check the utility’s output format and scaling controls before capturing. A platform-specific shortcut copied from an older guide may no longer match your edition.
Choose a format that survives the destination

Keep the untouched original. Make a working copy for cropping, redaction, and annotations, and export a final copy only after the edits are complete. Do not overwrite the source with a smaller version.

Edit for clarity without changing the evidence
Crop with context
Remove blank margins and unrelated applications, but leave enough surrounding UI to show where a control is located. A crop that removes the title bar, menu path, or field label can make a technically sharp image harder to understand.
Annotate sparingly
Use a single arrow, box, or short label to identify the action. Excessive circles, colors, and stickers compete with the interface. Keep annotations on the working copy so the original remains available for verification.
Remove private data
Inspect usernames, email addresses, tokens, order numbers, browser history, and notification previews. Use an opaque redaction or crop; a translucent marker may leave text recoverable. Simplifying a complex screenshot and using light mode can help in documentation, but neither is a universal requirement.
Respect destination dimensions
Mozilla’s contributor guide suggests keeping screenshots below 620 pixels in both directions for its own knowledge-base loading and accessibility context. That is a site-specific recommendation, not a universal maximum. For print, detailed technical review, or archival use, retain the full-resolution original and follow the actual destination’s requirements.

When upscaling can help—and when it cannot
Upscaling estimates intermediate pixels; it does not recreate the original screen state. Treat sharpened edges or AI-filled letterforms as an enhancement, not proof of information that was absent from the source. For evidence, labels, measurements, or interface text, compare every enhanced result with the original and disclose that it was enlarged.
Microsoft Photos Super Resolution
Microsoft Photos offers Super Resolution on Copilot+ PCs running Windows 11. Microsoft describes it as a local, non-generative AI model that enlarges and sharpens images with selectable enhancement levels. This is an eligibility-limited Photos feature, not a setting available on every Windows computer.
Windows AI API scaling limit
Microsoft’s Windows AI API documentation describes Image Super Resolution sharpening and scaling and sets an 8x maximum because higher factors can introduce artifacts and compromise accuracy. The limit is an API boundary, not a promise that 8x is ideal. Start with the smallest enlargement that makes the intended output readable.
Do not confuse display scaling with image repair
Changing monitor scaling or Photoshop’s interface scaling changes how controls are displayed while editing. Adobe documents Photoshop UI and per-monitor scaling options on Windows, including 100% to 400% in 25% increments for supported configurations. Those controls do not restore pixels missing from an existing screenshot. Increase page zoom or application text size before capture when the source is hard to read.

A practical quality workflow
- Diagnose: inspect the original at 100% and determine whether the problem is capture size, later compression, color handling, or unreadable source content.
- Recapture: enlarge the relevant UI, select the needed region or window, and capture at the display or output size required.
- Preserve: keep the original PNG or HEIF file and avoid repeated export cycles.
- Edit: crop for focus, redact private information, and add only annotations that clarify the instruction.
- Validate: view the final file in the destination app, check small text at 100%, and confirm that colors and contrast remain acceptable.
- Upscale only if necessary: use an eligible enhancement tool for a copy, choose a conservative factor, and mark uncertain detail as enhanced.
Common problems and fixes
The screenshot is sharp locally but blurry after upload
Compare the downloaded or posted copy with the local original. If dimensions changed, the service resized it; if file size fell sharply, it probably recompressed it. Upload the original file, choose a “full quality” or “original” option when available, or provide a download link instead of an inline preview.
Text is still unreadable after enlargement
Stop enlarging and recapture with browser or application zoom increased. AI sharpening cannot reliably infer small characters, and aggressive scaling can create letter-shaped artifacts.
HDR colors look flat or strange
Check whether the capture is HEIF HDR and whether the display and destination support HDR. Convert a copy to a destination-compatible SDR image when the audience uses standard displays; retain the HDR original separately.
Annotations obscure the control
Return to the unedited copy, reduce the annotation to one arrow or outline, and place it beside rather than over the label or button.

The app refuses to capture a window
Some protected applications block screenshots. Apple specifically notes that apps such as Apple TV may not permit screenshots of their windows. Capture an allowed region only when it is lawful and does not bypass content protection; otherwise use an approved export or documentation image.

Cost, reliability, and privacy checks
- Recapture is usually cheaper in time and more faithful than repairing a tiny source.
- For automated website captures, inspect the
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedresponse headers so a failed or blank result is not mistaken for a valid screenshot. - Use caching with a deliberate TTL for stable pages, but disable or shorten it when content changes frequently.
- Send authentication headers and cookies only when your security policy permits it, and avoid placing secrets in publicly exposed image URLs.
- Test the final image on the actual destination display, especially when using HDR, transparency, or very small text.

Should I enlarge the browser page or the screenshot file first?
Enlarge the page or application’s interface before taking a new capture. That records more real pixels; enlarging an existing file only interpolates or estimates detail.
Is a sharpened AI screenshot suitable as legal or technical evidence?
Keep the untouched original and identify any enhanced copy. AI sharpening can alter apparent edges and text, so it should not silently replace the source when accuracy matters.
