Display a transparent PNG with a normal <img> element; no special transparency attribute is required. The transparent pixels reveal the color or content painted behind the image. Use background-color when you want a controlled color, and use a CSS background-image when the PNG is purely decorative.
Use an <img> for a meaningful PNG
A logo, product cutout, diagram, icon, or other informative image belongs in the document as an image element. The browser reads the PNG’s alpha channel automatically and composites its transparent pixels with the page behind it.

The HTML Standard describes img as the element for a single image resource and notes that what it represents depends on its src and alt attributes (WHATWG HTML Standard). Replace the example alternative text with a concise description of the image’s purpose in this page.
Put a color behind the transparent pixels
Transparency is not a white background. It is an instruction to let whatever is underneath show through. Set the color on the image itself or, more commonly, on its wrapper:

</div>The background color is optional. Without it, the transparent areas reveal the ancestor’s background, the page background, or whatever is painted underneath according to the normal CSS painting order (MDN: background-color).
Why a checkerboard may appear in an editor
Graphics software often uses a checkerboard to visualize alpha transparency. That checkerboard is not stored in the PNG unless it was deliberately exported as pixels. In a browser, transparent areas normally look like the element’s real background.
Use a CSS background for decoration
If the PNG is part of a visual treatment rather than content a reader needs to understand, attach it to a decorative element with CSS:

}CSS backgrounds are not exposed as meaningful images to assistive technology (MDN: background-image). Keep essential information in HTML text or an img with suitable alternative text. Do not use a transparent img as a spacer or layout hack: the HTML Standard explicitly says, “The img element must not be used as a layout tool.”

For a composite, put each meaningful image in the markup and position a decorative layer with CSS. A positioned wrapper establishes the coordinate system:

}Use this only when the layers have a real visual purpose. Provide alternative text for any layer whose information is not duplicated elsewhere.
Choose sizing and fitting deliberately
Preserve the intrinsic aspect ratio
Set one dimension and leave the other automatic for ordinary content images:

CSS can still make the image responsive.
Fit an image inside a fixed box
When the box has both a width and height, object-fit controls how the replaced element is fitted, and object-position controls alignment:

}contain keeps the entire image visible and may leave empty space. cover fills the box and can crop the image. These rules affect the image’s box; they do not remove or add transparency (MDN: <img>).
Fit a CSS background
Backgrounds have their own sizing model:

}Use contain when all artwork must remain visible and cover when filling the region matters more than preserving every edge. Set background-repeat: no-repeat unless tiling is intentional.

Meaningful image
Use a non-empty alt that communicates the image’s role, not its file name:
<img src="checkmark.png" alt="Payment approved">If nearby text already conveys exactly the same information, an empty alternative can avoid repetition:

Prefer a CSS background for purely decorative artwork. If an img is required for layout or scripting, use alt="" and ensure it is not the only source of meaning. Do not put essential words into a background image; they may not be available to screen readers, search indexing, high-contrast modes, or users who disable images.

Common problems and fixes
A white rectangle appears
- The file is not actually transparent. Open the PNG in an editor that shows alpha and export it with transparency enabled. A white layer baked into the file cannot be removed with CSS.
- An ancestor has a white background. Inspect the element and its parents; transparent pixels reveal the nearest painted background.
- You are viewing a CSS background. Check
background-color,background-image, and any overlay pseudo-elements.
The image is stretched or blurry
- Set
height: autowhen changing width. - Check that CSS is not overriding the intrinsic ratio with both dimensions.
- Use a source PNG with enough pixels for the rendered size; transparency does not improve resolution.
The image repeats or is in the wrong place
For a background, explicitly set background-repeat: no-repeat, background-position, and background-size. For an img, inspect margins, flex or grid alignment, and object-position.
The PNG is missing or has a broken icon
- Open the exact URL directly and check capitalization, directory, and deployment case sensitivity.
- Confirm the server returns the file rather than an HTML error page.
- Check the browser console and Network panel for 404, CORS, or mixed-content errors.
It looks correct in one theme but not another
Transparent pixels inherit whatever is behind them. Define intentional light and dark surfaces, or use a wrapper whose color changes with the theme:

Performance and reliability considerations
Use the smallest PNG that preserves the required visual quality. PNG is useful for lossless edges and alpha, but a photographic image may be smaller as WebP or JPEG if transparency is unnecessary. Do not remove transparency merely to reduce bytes when the design depends on it.
Give important images dimensions, use responsive CSS, and avoid shipping a very large transparent canvas when the visible artwork occupies only a small portion. For below-the-fold decorative backgrounds, consider lazy-loading the containing component or applying the background only when it enters the design’s active state. Keep critical meaningful images in normal markup so their loading and alternative text are predictable.

Browser availability
MDN marks <img> as widely available across devices and browser versions and records broad availability since July 2015 (MDN reference). HTML and CSS specifications are living documents, so check the current references for unusual browser-specific behavior. Transparency itself is part of PNG rendering; it does not require a vendor prefix or a JavaScript library.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make only part of a PNG transparent with HTML?
No. HTML displays the alpha channel already stored in the image. Edit the PNG (or create a mask with CSS for a different visual effect) before displaying it.
Should the background color go on the image or its parent?
Either can work. Put it on the image when the color belongs only to that image; put it on a wrapper when the surface should include padding, multiple layers, or other content.
Will a transparent PNG improve accessibility automatically?
No. Accessibility depends on whether the image is meaningful and whether you provide appropriate alternative text. Transparency changes appearance, not its semantic role.
