This guide covers the documented self-hosted pattern, networking, browser state, interaction modes, security, troubleshooting, and a managed alternative when you do not want to operate a browser server.
What a hosted Playwright MCP setup actually is
“Hosted” here means a Playwright MCP process that runs separately from the MCP client and accepts connections over HTTP. It can be on the same computer, a container, a server on your network, or a remote machine. The official example uses port 8931 and the endpoint http://localhost:8931/mcp. Replace localhost with a hostname or IP address that the client can reach when the server is elsewhere.
The arrangement has three parts:
- MCP client: Claude, Cursor, or another MCP-compatible application that sends tool calls.
- Playwright MCP server: a Node.js process exposing browser tools over HTTP.
- Browser runtime: Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, or Microsoft Edge launched by Playwright, usually on the server host.
A screenshot request therefore travels from the client to the HTTP endpoint, through Playwright MCP to the browser, and back as an image result.

Prerequisites and deployment choices
Install the required software
- Node.js 20 or newer.
- An MCP client that supports an HTTP MCP endpoint.
- Network routing from the client to the server’s listening address and port.
Playwright downloads browser binaries automatically on first use according to its installation behavior. Plan for that initial download and enough disk space in a container or VM.
Choose where the browser runs

Path 1: connect an MCP client to a separately running server
Start Playwright MCP over HTTP
Run the server with an HTTP port. The documented example is:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --port 8931This starts a headed browser by default. For a server without a display, add --headless:

npx @playwright/mcp@latest --port 8931 --host 0.0.0.0 --headlessBinding to 0.0.0.0 only makes the process listen on available interfaces; it does not make the deployment secure. Use firewall rules, a private network, or an authenticated reverse proxy rather than exposing an unprotected browser-control endpoint to the public internet.
Point the client at /mcp
Add an HTTP MCP server in your client’s MCP configuration. The value must be the complete endpoint, including /mcp:

http://localhost:8931/mcpWhen the server is remote, use its reachable DNS name or address instead, for example http://browser-host.example.internal:8931/mcp. The exact configuration UI differs between clients, but the transport choice is HTTP and the server URL is the endpoint above.

It can capture the full page or a page element and return PNG, JPEG, or WebP output. The normal workflow is to let the assistant inspect an accessibility snapshot, navigate with semantic references, and request a screenshot for visual verification.
Path 2: let the client launch MCP locally
If the browser does not need to be remote, configure the client to launch the package itself:
npx @playwright/mcp@latestThis avoids HTTP routing and is the simplest setup for a single workstation. You can still select options such as headless operation, browser type, viewport, proxy, and profile mode in the client’s MCP server configuration. Use the separate HTTP pattern when the browser must run in a container, on another machine, or under an independently managed process.
Make screenshots reproducible
Browser, viewport, and device settings
Choose a browser explicitly when rendering differences matter. Playwright MCP supports Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Microsoft Edge. Set a fixed viewport size and device profile for visual regression work; otherwise responsive breakpoints can change the captured layout. Proxy settings belong on the server because that is where page requests originate.

Wait for the page to be ready
Single-page applications may render after the initial navigation response. Have the assistant wait for a meaningful element or application state before calling browser_take_screenshot. For animation-heavy pages, a short delay or a stable state check produces more consistent images than capturing immediately.
Use the right interaction model
Accessibility-tree snapshots are the default. The server returns roles, names, text, and references that the assistant can use to click, fill, and navigate normal controls. This is usually more reliable and less token-intensive than guessing coordinates.
Enable the optional vision capability when the interface is primarily visual: canvas or WebGL applications, maps, image editors, charts, or controls absent from the accessibility tree. Vision adds coordinate-based mouse tools that can use a screenshot to locate elements. It is a fallback for pixel-only interfaces, not a requirement for ordinary page screenshots.
Choose a profile deliberately
Playwright MCP uses persistent profiles by default. Cookies, local storage, and login state can survive between sessions, which is useful for authenticated sites but risky on a shared host. Isolated mode starts with a fresh context and writes nothing to disk. If a workflow needs a clean context plus known authentication, load an initial storage-state file and protect that file as a credential.
HTTP behavior and multi-client operation
Heartbeat timeouts
The HTTP server sends heartbeats and uses a five-second timeout by default. If a reverse proxy or slow client fails to answer pings, set PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_PING_TIMEOUT_MS to a larger value. Setting it to 0 disables the timeout; do that only when you understand the consequences for detecting dead connections.
Shared browser context
--shared-browser-context lets connected clients operate in one browser context. This can reduce setup work for a coordinated workflow, but it also means clients can see and change the same tabs, cookies, and page state. Leave it off when sessions must be isolated.

Container networking
In a container, bind with --host 0.0.0.0, publish port 8931, and ensure the client can resolve and route to the published address. A server listening successfully inside a container is not enough if the port is not published or a firewall blocks it.
Security and secret handling
Treat a hosted browser server as a privileged service. Playwright’s documentation warns: “This tool runs arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process and is RCE-equivalent — only enable it for trusted MCP clients.” Do not connect untrusted clients to the endpoint.

Origin allowlists, file-access guards, and secret-redaction settings are convenience defenses, not complete security boundaries. Redirects can bypass the intent of origin restrictions, and redaction does not replace access control. Put real isolation at the network and client-permission layers: private networking, firewall policy, authenticated proxying, least-privilege accounts, and disposable hosts for untrusted browsing.
Persistent profiles may contain authentication cookies and local storage. Restrict filesystem permissions, avoid sharing profile directories between tenants, and use isolated mode for sensitive or anonymous captures. Never paste API keys, cookies, or storage-state contents into an agent prompt.

MCP is designed for an agentic loop in which the model explores a page and calls browser tools. It is a good fit when your client already speaks MCP. The trade-off is higher token use because tool schemas and accessibility snapshots enter the model context.
Playwright CLI is often preferable for coding agents working in a large repository where concise command output and scripted repeatability matter more than interactive tool discovery. Choose MCP for client-integrated exploration; choose CLI when deterministic commands and lower context overhead are the priority.

Troubleshooting
The client cannot connect
- Confirm the server is running and listening on port
8931. - Use the full
/mcppath, not just the host and port. - Replace
localhostwhen the server runs in a container or another machine. - Check container port publishing, firewalls, DNS, and reverse-proxy routing.
- If the client connects but soon disconnects, investigate the heartbeat timeout and proxy behavior.
The browser never launches
Allow the first-run browser download to finish and verify that the server user can write to its cache directory. On a headless host, include --headless. Container images may also need the operating-system libraries required by the selected browser.
The screenshot is blank or captures the wrong state
Wait for a stable selector or application state, then capture again. Check whether a persistent profile restored an unexpected tab or login. Use isolated mode for a clean reproduction and set a fixed viewport if responsive layout changes are involved.
A control cannot be clicked
Inspect the accessibility snapshot and use its role or name. If the control is drawn on canvas, hidden from the accessibility tree, or visually positioned without semantic labels, enable vision and use screenshot-based coordinates.
Multiple clients interfere with one another
Disable --shared-browser-context and give each client an isolated profile or separate server instance. Shared context is a deliberate collaboration mode, not a general performance setting.
