How To

How to Take a Screenshot on Windows 10 and 11

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

For most Windows screenshots, press Windows+Shift+S. Choose rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip, select what you need, then use the notification to annotate, copy, save, or share it. For a full-screen image saved automatically, press Windows+PrtScn. To capture only the active window, press Alt+Print Screen.

Choose the shortcut that matches the result you need

Windows offers several capture paths. The important differences are what appears in the image, whether Windows saves a file or copies pixels to the clipboard, and whether you want editing tools immediately.

What you need Shortcut or tool What happens
Select part of the screen Windows+Shift+S Snipping Tool overlay opens. The selection is copied to the clipboard and a notification opens the editor.
Capture the entire screen and save a file Windows+PrtScn Windows saves an image in PicturesScreenshots.
Copy the entire screen for pasting PrtScn The full screen is copied to the clipboard; paste it with Ctrl+V.
Copy only the active window Alt+Print Screen The focused window is copied to the clipboard.
Capture a menu that disappears Snipping Tool delay Choose a delay from 1 to 5 seconds, open the menu during the countdown, and capture it.
Record a region as video Windows+Shift+R Snipping Tool opens its video-capture mode.

On compact keyboards, the Print Screen key may be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Scr. Some laptops require Fn with a Print Screen shortcut. If your keyboard has no usable key, use Windows+Shift+S or connect a USB or wireless keyboard with a Print Screen key.

Use Windows+Shift+S for a precise screenshot

1. Open the Snipping Tool overlay

Press Windows+Shift+S. The desktop dims and the Snipping Tool capture bar appears. Select one of four modes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Rectangular snip: drag a rectangle around the area.
  • Freeform snip: draw an irregular outline.
  • Window snip: select a visible application window.
  • Full-screen snip: capture every display shown by the full-screen mode.

2. Make the selection

Rectangular and freeform modes require a drag. In window mode, move over the target window and click it. Full-screen mode captures immediately. The resulting image is placed on the clipboard.

3. Open the editor from the notification

Windows normally displays a notification after the capture. Select it to open the Snipping Tool editor. From there you can crop, draw with a pen, highlight, copy, save, and share. Text actions can recognize text in the image, which is useful for copying a serial number, error message, or address from a screenshot.

4. Save or paste the image

Select the save control in the editor to choose a filename and location. If you only need the image in another application, switch to that application and press Ctrl+V. Clipboard content can be replaced by your next copy operation, so save the image first when it matters.

Save a full-screen file with Windows+PrtScn

Press Windows+PrtScn to capture all visible screens and save the result automatically. Open File Explorer, select Pictures, then open Screenshots. This is the quickest option when you want a file without selecting an area or opening the editor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If nothing happens, try holding Fn while pressing Windows+PrtScn. Laptop manufacturers map the key differently, and Microsoft documents alternate keyboard shortcuts for hardware where Print Screen is unavailable. You can always use Windows+Shift+S instead.

Copy the whole screen or one window

Copy everything with PrtScn

Press PrtScn to copy the entire desktop to the clipboard. Open Paint, an email, a document, or an image editor and press Ctrl+V. This method does not automatically create a file; use the destination application’s Save command.

Copy only the focused window

Click the window you want so it is active, then press Alt+Print Screen. Paste with Ctrl+V. This is useful for sharing an application dialog without exposing other windows, notifications, or the taskbar.

Alt+Print Screen captures the active window, not necessarily the application you last used. Check the title bar or click the window immediately before using the shortcut.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capture a menu, tooltip, or other transient interface

Menus and tooltips often close when you press a capture shortcut. Use Snipping Tool’s delay instead:

  1. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
  2. Open the snip options and choose a delay of 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 seconds.
  3. Select rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen mode.
  4. During the countdown, open the Start menu, context menu, tooltip, or dialog you need.
  5. When the delay ends, make the selection if your chosen mode requires it.
  6. Use the editor to crop, annotate, copy, or save the result.

A longer delay gives you time to open nested menus, but it also increases the chance that the pointer or another notification appears in the frame. Move the pointer away before the countdown finishes when you want a clean image.

Rank #3

Record a region as video

For a short screen recording rather than a still image, press Windows+Shift+R. Snipping Tool opens video capture. Select the region, start recording, and stop when finished. Use this for a reproducible bug or a sequence of clicks; use a still snip when one frame communicates the issue.

Where Windows screenshots are stored

  • Windows+PrtScn: File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots.
  • Windows+Shift+S: initially copied to the clipboard; save it from the Snipping Tool notification/editor or paste it into another application.
  • PrtScn and Alt+Print Screen: copied to the clipboard until another copy operation replaces them.

If Pictures is redirected to OneDrive or another managed location, the visible folder may differ from the default local path. In that case, use File Explorer’s search for a recently created image or check the location shown by the Snipping Tool Save command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Edit, extract text, and share the capture

Annotate without another program

Snipping Tool’s editor includes pen and highlighter controls, cropping, copy, save, and share actions. Use annotations to circle a button, obscure an account number, or point to a line in an error dialog. Crop before sharing when the original capture includes unrelated personal information.

Extract words with Text actions

When the editor offers Text actions, run text recognition on the screenshot and copy the detected text. OCR can misread small fonts, unusual symbols, or compressed images. Verify commands, URLs, and account numbers against the original before using them.

Share the correct format

PNG preserves crisp text and interface edges. JPEG can be smaller for photographs but introduces compression artifacts. Save the original before making heavy annotations so you can create a clean second version later.

If what you actually need is a screenshot of a public website rather than your Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled.

Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the outcome with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also provides an MCP server for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.

One-call cURL example

See the parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Beyond the basic request, ScreenshotNeo supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper sizes and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay, or network idle, ad/tracker/request blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links for public image tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work for easier migration.

The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans are Starter ($5 for 3,000), Growth ($15 for 15,000), Pro ($39 for 60,000), Scale ($99 for 250,000), and Business ($249 for 1,000,000); yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get the 1,000 monthly screenshots without adding a card.

Troubleshoot common Windows screenshot problems

The shortcut does nothing

  • Try Fn with PrtScn on a laptop.
  • Use Windows+Shift+S, which does not depend on an automatic file-save action.
  • Check that another utility or keyboard remapping tool has not reassigned Print Screen.
  • On a managed work PC, ask your administrator whether screenshot capture is restricted.

The image was copied but you cannot find a file

PrtScn and Alt+Print Screen use the clipboard. Open Paint or another editor, press Ctrl+V, and save manually. Windows+Shift+S also starts in the clipboard; select the notification to save it through Snipping Tool.

The capture includes the wrong window

For Alt+Print Screen, click the target window immediately before pressing the shortcut. For Windows+Shift+S, use window snip and select the highlighted window instead of dragging a region.

A menu closed before capture

Open Snipping Tool first and set a 1-to-5-second delay. Start the snip, open the menu during the countdown, and let the capture complete.

The screenshot is blank or incomplete

Retry after the window finishes rendering. Some protected video, remote-desktop, or hardware-accelerated surfaces may not expose pixels to ordinary capture tools. Capture the surrounding application window or use the application’s own export function when available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Text recognition is wrong

Crop tightly around the text, use the highest-resolution capture available, and check punctuation and numbers against the image. OCR is an aid, not a guarantee for commands or sensitive identifiers.

A practical decision rule

  • Use Windows+Shift+S when you need control over the region, window, or full-screen scope.
  • Use Windows+PrtScn when you want a full-screen file immediately.
  • Use PrtScn when another application will receive the whole screen through Ctrl+V.
  • Use Alt+Print Screen when only the active window belongs in the image.
  • Use a Snipping Tool delay for menus and other transient controls.
  • Use Windows+Shift+R when a short video explains more than one still frame.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change where Windows+PrtScn saves screenshots?

Windows saves that shortcut to the Screenshots folder under the Pictures location. If Pictures is redirected, use File Explorer to locate the redirected folder or save future captures manually from Snipping Tool.

Does Windows+Shift+S capture multiple monitors?

Its available modes depend on the display layout and selected capture mode. Choose full-screen snip for the complete visible desktop, or use window or rectangular snip to limit the result.

Can I screenshot a protected streaming video?

Protected playback surfaces may appear black or blank to ordinary screenshot tools. Use the service’s permitted download, export, or sharing feature instead.
