YouTube exposes several size variants, but a video may not provide every one. If you own the video and want to replace its thumbnail, use YouTube Studio instead.
First decide what you need
“Get a thumbnail” can mean two different tasks:
- Retrieve the existing image: obtain the video metadata, choose one of the thumbnail URLs returned in
snippet.thumbnails, and save that image. - Change the image on your own video: open the video in YouTube Studio, upload a custom image or choose a suggested frame, and save it. Creator eligibility and upload rules apply.
The API retrieval route does not give you permission to edit a video. Conversely, the Studio upload workflow is not a download method.
Official method: retrieve the thumbnail URL from YouTube metadata
1. Identify the video
Start with the YouTube video whose thumbnail you need. For a programmatic workflow, obtain that video’s resource through the YouTube Data API. The resource includes a snippet object and, when thumbnail data is available, a thumbnails object.

2. Inspect snippet.thumbnails
Each available variant is represented by a size label and an image URL. The response can also include width and height. Select a URL that is actually present in the response; do not construct a URL from the video ID and assume that a particular size exists.
A practical preference order is:
maxres, if returned and suitable for your use.standard, if available.high.medium.defaultas a final fallback.
The labels are preferences, not guarantees. YouTube may expose fewer variants for a particular video, and the width or height fields can be omitted.
3. Open the returned image URL
Copy the URL from the selected object and open it directly in a browser tab. Use the browser’s normal image-save command (for example, right-click the image and choose the save option supplied by your browser). Saving the image URL, rather than the watch page, avoids downloading the surrounding player and page interface.
4. Keep the original response with the file
If the image will be used in a catalog, moderation queue, or other automated system, retain the video ID, the size label you selected, and any dimensions returned with it. That record makes it clear which variant was downloaded and lets you fall back to another available size later.

If your application already has the video resource as a Python dictionary, this function chooses the largest preferred variant that YouTube actually returned:

How large is a YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube’s API reference describes these typical video-thumbnail dimensions:

These are reference specifications, not a promise that every video has all five variants. The highest-resolution choice is therefore “the largest suitable URL returned for this video,” not automatically maxres. If a variant is missing, use the next one in your preference order.
How to download a thumbnail without writing code
- Obtain the video resource through the YouTube Data API.
- Expand
snippet.thumbnailsin the response. - Choose an available entry such as
highormaxres. - Open that entry’s
urlvalue in a new browser tab. - Save the image from the browser.
This approach is safer than relying on a fixed video-ID-to-file-name formula, because the API tells you which image URLs and sizes are available for that particular resource.
How to change the thumbnail on your own video
Use YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content.
- Select the video you manage.
- In the thumbnail area, upload an image or choose one of YouTube’s suggested options.
- Save the video changes.
Custom-thumbnail access and uploads depend on YouTube’s current eligibility and content rules. This Studio workflow is for changing a creator-owned video; it does not retrieve another channel’s existing image.

Custom-upload requirements
- JPG and PNG are among the supported image formats.
- YouTube recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio for video thumbnails.
- For video thumbnails, YouTube lists a 2 MB limit on mobile and a 50 MB limit on desktop. Podcast-thumbnail limits differ: 10 MB on mobile and 50 MB on desktop.
- Vertical videos with a 16:9 custom thumbnail can appear with an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on some surfaces.
Those limits apply to creator uploads, not to downloading an already published thumbnail.
Retrieving versus setting: do not mix the API methods
The thumbnail data in a video resource is the retrieval path. The API method named thumbnails.set is an upload-and-set operation: it requires authorization and a videoId, accepts image content, and documents a 50 MB maximum with image/jpeg, image/png, and application/octet-stream media types. It does not download an existing thumbnail for you.
Troubleshooting
There is no maxres entry
That is normal. Availability depends on the video and its source image. Select standard, high, or the next available entry instead of manufacturing a URL.
The response has a size label but no dimensions
Use the URL. Width and height may be omitted from the resource, so absence of those properties does not by itself mean the image URL is unusable.
The saved file is a page instead of an image
Check that you opened the URL inside the selected object under snippet.thumbnails, not the video’s watch-page URL or an API response page. Open the image URL directly before saving.

You need a different crop or a new design
Retrieval gives you the image YouTube published. It does not create a new composition. If you manage the video, prepare a compliant custom image and upload it in Studio.

That method is for setting a thumbnail on a video you are authorized to manage. Verify the authorized account, the video ID, the media type, and the applicable upload-size limit. For simply obtaining an existing image, return to the resource metadata route.
