Short answer: Pantheon Autopilot runs visual regression tests in an isolated Multidev environment after it applies available WordPress or Drupal updates. It compares new screenshots with a baseline, so a team can review layout differences before deploying to Test or Live. If you do not have Autopilot eligibility, you can run the same basic pattern yourself with BackstopJS, a headless browser and a CI hook.
What Pantheon visual regression testing does
Pantheon Autopilot is a managed update workflow for WordPress and Drupal. It detects available updates, creates an isolated Multidev environment, applies the updates there, runs automated visual regression testing (VRT), and can optionally deploy the update after testing. Pantheon describes the purpose as keeping the site’s user experience consistent while securing the site and implementing new features.
VRT is screenshot comparison, not a functional test. A browser visits configured pages, captures a reference image, captures the candidate version, and highlights pixel-level differences. A changed hero image, font, spacing rule, broken stylesheet or shifted navigation can therefore appear in the diff even when the page returns HTTP 200. Conversely, a visual test will not prove that a form submits, a payment works or an API returns the right data.
How Autopilot’s workflow is isolated
Updates are tested away from Live
Pantheon sites have separate Dev, Test and Live environments. The documented promotion path moves code from Dev to Test and then to Live. Autopilot uses a Multidev environment for its update attempt, which keeps the candidate change separate from the production site while screenshots are taken.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Review happens before deployment
After the candidate update is tested, the team reviews the visual result. An acceptable result can be promoted through the normal Pantheon workflow; an unacceptable result is fixed or discarded instead of being sent to Live. Autopilot can optionally deploy updates after testing, but that option should be governed by the review policy your team chooses.
Hooks can trigger automated checks
Pantheon supports platform hooks that let teams trigger automated tests as part of environment changes. A hook can start the visual suite after code reaches Test, giving teams a repeatable gate rather than relying on a person to remember a manual screenshot pass.
What is actually tested
The exact coverage depends on the paths and BackstopJS settings configured for your site. Pantheon’s maintained Drupal example stores visual tests under .ci/test/visual-regression, runs BackstopJS and uses a headless browser to capture and compare screenshots over time. The repository is an example, not a universal configuration: maintainers must define their own URLs, selectors, viewports and comparison thresholds.
Pages and states
- Choose representative templates: home page, listing, article, landing page, search and key commerce or campaign pages.
- Add states that are easy to miss in a single crawl, such as an expanded menu, a modal, a logged-in view or a consent state.
- Use stable fixtures. Rotating ads, timestamps, personalized recommendations and random content create diffs that do not represent a code regression.
Viewports
At minimum, cover a desktop and a narrow mobile viewport. Add tablet or additional breakpoints when your CSS changes substantially between them. A responsive defect can be invisible at one width and obvious at another.

Baselines and approvals
The first successful run establishes reference screenshots. Later runs compare against those references. Intentional design changes require an explicit baseline update; approving every diff automatically would defeat the safety check.
Set up a self-managed BackstopJS test for Drupal
BackstopJS is the implementation used in Pantheon’s example. Drupal teams can also use Drupal.org’s Backstop Generator module, which provides a UI for defining BackstopJS profiles, scenarios and viewports, then generates and stores the JSON configuration for later iteration.
1. Define scenarios
Install BackstopJS in the repository used by your CI job, then create a configuration that points at your Test or Multidev URL. A minimal example is:
{
"id": "site-vrt",
"viewports": [
{"label": "desktop", "width": 1440, "height": 900},
{"label": "mobile", "width": 390, "height": 844}
],
"scenarios": [
{"label": "home", "url": "https://example.pantheonsite.io/"},
{"label": "article", "url": "https://example.pantheonsite.io/news/example"}
],
"paths": {
"bitmaps_reference": "backstop_data/bitmaps_reference",
"bitmaps_test": "backstop_data/bitmaps_test",
"html_report": "backstop_data/html_report",
"ci_report": "backstop_data/ci_report"
},
"engine": "playwright"
}
Replace the host and paths with your own environment. Add selectors, delays or authentication only when the page requires them, and keep the candidate and baseline conditions identical.

- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
2. Capture the baseline
- Point the configuration at the known-good environment.
- Run
npx backstop reference --config=backstop.json. - Commit the generated reference images to the branch or artifact store used by CI.
3. Test an update
- Apply the WordPress or Drupal update in Dev or the isolated Multidev environment.
- Make the candidate URL reachable to the CI runner.
- Run
npx backstop test --config=backstop.json. - Open the generated HTML report and inspect every failed scenario, not only the summary count.
4. Approve or reject deliberately
Use npx backstop approve --config=backstop.json only when the visual change is intentional and reviewed. If the result is a defect, fix the update or configuration and rerun. Never replace the baseline merely to turn a red build green.
5. Put the test behind a CI or Pantheon hook
Run the test after the candidate reaches Test or Multidev. Store screenshots and the HTML report as build artifacts, fail the job on unexpected differences, and protect the baseline branch so an ordinary content deploy cannot silently rewrite it.
Autopilot versus self-managed BackstopJS
| Decision area | Pantheon Autopilot | Self-managed BackstopJS |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Documentation lists Gold, Platinum, Diamond and Agency partner accounts; contact Pantheon Sales for current plan details. | Runs wherever you can install Node.js, a browser and CI; no Pantheon account tier is implied. |
| CMS coverage | Managed update workflow for WordPress and Drupal. | Can test Drupal, WordPress or another web application if you configure its URLs. |
| Isolation | Autopilot applies updates in a Multidev environment; Pantheon also provides Dev, Test and Live. | You create and secure the staging or preview environment yourself. |
| Update deployment | Detects and applies updates and can optionally deploy after testing. | You write the deployment, approval and rollback steps. |
| Scenarios and viewports | Still depend on the site’s configured paths and settings. | Fully explicit in BackstopJS JSON or Drupal Backstop Generator. |
| CI and maintenance | Less infrastructure to operate, but eligibility and Pantheon workflow apply. | More control, with ongoing browser, fixture, baseline and flake maintenance. |
| Who reviews diffs | Your team reviews the Autopilot result before promotion unless your policy permits automatic deployment. | Your CI owners and release reviewers define the gate. |
Common failures and fixes
Every page produces a large diff
Check that the candidate uses the same content, fonts, viewport and authentication as the baseline. Disable animations, wait for web fonts and remove rotating or personalized components. A changed environment URL can also load different CSS or data.
The runner cannot reach Multidev
Confirm DNS, access controls and credentials from the CI network. Do not put passwords in the BackstopJS file; inject them as protected CI variables and use a short-lived test account.

Only mobile scenarios fail
Inspect the responsive breakpoint, viewport width and device pixel ratio. Ensure the test runner is not applying a different browser scale than the baseline.
Cookie banners or chat widgets obscure the page
Make the state deterministic: pre-seed consent, click the banner in a setup step, or hide the widget selector. If the banner is the subject of the test, give it a dedicated scenario instead.
Small anti-aliasing differences fail the build
Pin the browser version and operating-system image used for reference and test captures. Use a narrowly justified comparison threshold rather than a large tolerance that hides real layout movement.
The update passes visually but is still broken
Pair VRT with unit, integration, accessibility, link, form and performance checks. Screenshot comparison cannot validate server-side behavior or every interactive path.

FAQ
Does Autopilot test WordPress updates?
Yes. Autopilot is documented as a managed update workflow for both WordPress and Drupal, with visual regression testing in an isolated environment.
Is BackstopJS a replacement for Autopilot?
It replaces the screenshot-comparison portion you operate yourself, not Pantheon’s managed update detection, Multidev workflow or optional deployment controls.
Can VRT guarantee that an update is safe?
No. It can expose rendered visual changes in the scenarios you define. Functional, security, accessibility and data-integrity checks remain necessary.
