Use the method that matches what you need: right-click an individual image and choose Save image as to download the original file, or use a screenshot command when you need the page as rendered pixels. Firefox can save a visible region or an entire page directly as a PNG. If a download is WebP or JPEG, export it as PNG in an image editor or converter; renaming the extension alone does not change the file encoding.
First decide: original image or a picture of the page?
These are different jobs. A direct download preserves the asset delivered by the website, including its available resolution and (when present) transparency. A screenshot records what the browser renders: surrounding text, controls, spacing, overlays and the current visual state.
- Choose direct save for a logo, photo, icon or illustration when you want the source file.
- Choose a screenshot for a visible section, a complete page, a CSS background, or a layout that cannot be downloaded as a normal image.
- Convert to PNG when the source is WebP, JPEG or another format but your destination requires PNG.
PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so it is useful for interface graphics, diagrams and precise reproduction. WebP and AVIF usually produce smaller files; JPEG is commonly used for photographs. Saving as PNG may therefore increase file size without adding detail that was not in the source.
Save one image from a webpage
Chrome on Windows, Linux or macOS
- Open the page and locate the image.
- Right-click the image and select Save image as.
- Choose a folder and filename, then select Save. If you do not choose a location, Chrome uses its configured Downloads folder.
The downloaded file keeps the format supplied by the site. A file may therefore end in .png, .jpg, .webp, .svg or another supported extension.

Safari on Mac
- Control-click the image.
- Choose Save Image to “Downloads”, Save Image As, or Add Image to Photos.
- If Safari asks for a destination, select the folder and confirm.
Safari notes that some background images cannot be saved directly. Dragging the image to a document or the desktop can work in cases where the context menu does not offer a usable save command.
When the context menu saves the wrong thing
Modern pages may display an image through a CSS background-image, a canvas, an image viewer, or a transparent overlay. Right-clicking can then save a thumbnail, a page wrapper, or nothing at all. In those cases, use the screenshot workflow below, inspect the page’s own download control, or ask the site owner for the original asset. Respect copyright, terms of use and access controls.
Save a visible area or an entire webpage as PNG
Firefox built-in screenshot
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose one of Firefox’s targets: a custom region, an automatically detected page part, Save full page, or Save visible.
- Select Download. Firefox saves a PNG in the same folder used for its default downloads.
Firefox names the file with the capture date, time and page title. This is the clearest built-in route when you want a PNG representation of the browser render rather than the original image bytes.
What a full-page capture includes
A full-page image can be much taller than the viewport. It may include sticky headers repeatedly or capture content after the browser has triggered lazy loading. Scroll through the result before publishing or sending it. Dynamic ads, consent dialogs, chat widgets and logged-in content can also appear exactly as rendered at capture time.
Chrome and Safari alternatives
Chrome and Safari provide screenshot features through their developer or operating-system tools, but labels and availability vary by browser version and platform. If you need a repeatable PNG rather than a one-off manual capture, a dedicated screenshot service or an automation script is usually more consistent. The important distinction remains the same: a screenshot is a new raster image, not the site’s original file.

Convert WebP or JPEG to PNG correctly
- Check the downloaded filename and the image properties to identify the actual format.
- Open the file in an editor or a trusted converter that explicitly supports PNG export.
- Choose Export or Save As, select PNG, and preserve transparency if the source contains an alpha channel.
- Open the new file and verify that it ends in
.pngand is recognized as a PNG by your operating system or image software.
Changing photo.webp to photo.png only changes the label. The bytes remain WebP, so applications that inspect the file signature may reject it. Conversion also cannot recreate detail discarded by a lossy JPEG encode or by a small responsive image. If maximum resolution matters, locate the site’s original or download-size option before converting.
Transparency and color checks
PNG can retain transparency, but only if the source has transparency and your export settings keep it. A converter may flatten transparent pixels onto a white background. Check the result over both a light and dark background. Color profiles can also shift slightly between applications; use a color-managed editor when exact brand colors matter.

To force PNG, set the service’s image-format option described in the documentation rather than changing a downloaded extension. The response headers X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed let a job record whether a clean result was returned and charged.

Troubleshooting
The saved file is WebP instead of PNG
The site supplied WebP, often to reduce size. Convert it with an explicit PNG export, or take a screenshot and save that capture as PNG. Do not rename the extension.
There is no “Save image as” option
The visual may be a CSS background, canvas, overlay or protected viewer. Use Firefox’s screenshot command, the page’s own download button, or request the original asset.

The PNG is blurry
You may have saved a thumbnail or a low-resolution responsive variant. Open the image at 100 percent, look for an original-size link, or capture at a larger viewport and retina scale. A conversion cannot add detail.
The full-page screenshot is missing sections
Lazy-loaded content may not have been rendered. Scroll through the page first, use a capture tool that waits for a selector or network idle, or add a deliberate delay. Very tall pages can also hit browser memory limits; capture sections separately when necessary.
A consent dialog or chat bubble covers the result

The page shows a CAPTCHA, blank result or timeout
Retry with a normal browser session, verify that the URL is reachable, and check authentication or regional requirements. Automated services cannot guarantee access to every bot-protected page. Quality and privacy checklist
- Confirm whether you need original bytes or rendered pixels.
- Check the actual MIME type and extension before converting.
- Verify dimensions, transparency and readability at 100 percent.
- Review dynamic content, personal data, consent states and licensed material before sharing.
- For automation, set a viewport, wait condition, output format and timeout explicitly, then log the result status.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save a webpage image as PNG without installing software?
Yes. Use Firefox’s Take Screenshot and download the visible area or full page as a PNG. For an individual asset, use the browser’s Save image as command and convert only if the downloaded format is not PNG.
Does taking a screenshot preserve the original image quality?
No. A screenshot records rendered pixels at the chosen viewport and scale. Directly downloading the source preserves the file supplied by the site and may provide higher resolution.

Why is my PNG file larger than the WebP file?
PNG is lossless and often less compact than WebP, especially for photographs. The larger size is normal and does not indicate a failed conversion.
Can a screenshot include a CSS background image?
Yes. A screenshot captures the rendered background even when the browser cannot save that background as a separate image file.
