For a single page, use your browser’s Save Page As command and choose a complete-page format, not HTML-only. The browser saves an HTML file plus a companion folder containing images and other assets. For several linked pages, use HTTrack with a deliberately limited scope. For repeatable command-line downloads, GNU Wget can fetch an HTML page and its requisites and convert links for offline viewing.

No downloader can guarantee a perfect copy of script-driven content. Lazy-loaded images, consent dialogs, bot checks and other assets created only after JavaScript runs may be absent. Always open the saved result and inspect it.

Choose the method that matches your goal

Need Best method What it preserves Main limitation
One page for offline reading Browser complete-page save HTML, pictures and supporting files Interactive behavior and some links may not survive
A local copy of several linked pages HTTrack Discovered pages and resources, with links rewritten for offline browsing Does not execute JavaScript, so runtime-created URLs can be missed
A repeatable terminal workflow GNU Wget An HTML page, its requisites and optionally converted local links Script-generated content is not automatically reproduced

The browser method is usually the right answer to “How do I save a webpage with all its pictures?” A site copier is a different tool: it follows links and can create a browsable mirror, but it also needs scope limits and monitoring.

Method 1: Save one page with Firefox

Mozilla’s Firefox instructions (last updated August 11, 2023) document the clearest complete-page workflow. Labels differ in other browsers and operating systems, but the distinction between a complete copy and HTML-only is important.

  1. Open the page and wait until the images you need are visible.
  2. Open the browser menu and choose Save Page As.
  3. In the file-type menu, select Web page, complete.
  4. Choose a destination and save. Firefox creates an HTML file and a companion directory for pictures and other supporting files.
  5. Disconnect from the network, open the saved HTML file, and check the important images, captions and layout.

Do not select HTML only when pictures are required. Firefox describes that format as saving the original page without pictures. The complete format is intended to save the page with pictures, but it may not retain the original HTML link structure. Browser save behavior also varies by version, so validate the actual file.

Saving a single image instead

If you need one image rather than the whole page, right-click it (or Ctrl-click on macOS) and choose Save Image As. This avoids collecting unrelated scripts, stylesheets and trackers.

When a browser save looks incomplete

  • Scroll through the page before saving so images that use ordinary lazy loading have a chance to load.
  • Keep the HTML file and its companion folder together; moving one without the other breaks relative paths.
  • Test the copy offline. A page that looks complete while online may still be loading assets from the original host.
  • Expect videos, forms, login sessions and other interactive features to fail or behave differently offline.

Method 2: Mirror linked pages with HTTrack

Use HTTrack when “download a webpage” really means “make a local mirror of several pages.” Its documentation describes a crawler that copies a website to disk, rewrites links so the local copy can be browsed, and supports Windows, Linux/Unix, Android and command-line interfaces.

Start a bounded command-line mirror

httrack https://example.com/ --path mydir

This is a starting form, not a permission slip to crawl an entire site. HTTrack’s documented defaults stay on the starting host, follow links within that scope and obey robots.txt. Configure the project’s scope, travel mode and filters so it only visits pages you are authorized to copy. Same-address or same-domain scope is safer than a broad “everywhere” setting.

What HTTrack can and cannot discover

HTTrack parses HTML and CSS but does not execute JavaScript. It can fetch an image URL present in source or CSS; it cannot discover a URL that exists only after a script runs. This is common with JavaScript lazy-loading, client-side galleries and API-rendered pages. More aggressive parsing can help with awkwardly formatted links that are already in the source, but it cannot create runtime links that are never present there.

Inspect the mirror and its logs

  1. Open the local index and follow several rewritten links.
  2. Compare image counts and dimensions with the online page.
  3. Review hts-log.txt and hts-err.txt in the project output. They identify URLs that were refused, redirected or filtered.
  4. Keep the project cache if you expect to resume an interrupted transfer or update an existing mirror.

HTTrack supports continuing interrupted projects and updating a mirror from its cache. That is safer than deleting the project and starting over, because a restart loses the crawler’s previous state.

Method 3: Download a page and its requisites with GNU Wget

GNU Wget is useful when you want a scriptable, repeatable download rather than a point-and-click archive. The GNU Wget 1.25.0 Manual documents fetching a single HTML page with its requisites without enabling recursive crawling, and converting downloaded document links for local viewing.

Because Wget syntax and option names can differ between versions and packaged variants, use the manual that matches the Wget installed on your system. The workflow is:

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac

  1. Identify the exact page URL and a writable output directory.
  2. Use Wget’s documented page-requisites option for a single document.
  3. Enable its documented HTML-link conversion when the result must open locally.
  4. Inspect the downloaded HTML and asset files; do not assume a successful exit means every image loaded.

Wget downloads what it can fetch from the HTML and linked resources. It does not promise to reproduce content assembled only by client-side JavaScript. For a dynamic page, save after the browser has rendered it or use a capture service that runs a browser.

Why images go missing

HTML-only format selected

The most common browser mistake is choosing HTML only. Re-save with the complete-page option and keep the companion directory beside the HTML file.

Lazy loading and runtime URLs

An image may have a placeholder in the source and receive its real URL only after scrolling or script execution. Static downloaders cannot fetch a URL they never discover. Scroll the page before a browser save; for HTTrack or Wget, inspect source and logs and expect some omissions on heavily scripted sites.

Blocked, redirected or filtered resources

Access controls, redirects and crawler filters can prevent an otherwise visible image from being stored. HTTrack’s log and error files show these cases. In a browser save, check the companion folder and the browser’s offline error messages.

Relative paths broken after moving files

Complete-page saves rely on relative paths between the HTML file and its asset folder. Moving or renaming only one part breaks images. Move the pair together, preserving their relationship.

Troubleshooting checklist

The saved page has no pictures

  • Confirm Web page, complete, not HTML only.
  • Verify the companion asset folder is beside the HTML file.
  • Open the file offline and inspect the folder for image files.

Only modern, below-the-fold images are missing

  • Scroll through the online page before saving.
  • For a mirror, assume JavaScript lazy loading is the cause until source inspection proves otherwise.
  • Capture a rendered page instead of relying on a static crawler when the image URL is created at runtime.

HTTrack downloaded too many or too few pages

  • Review same-address, same-domain or broader scope settings.
  • Use travel limits and filters to exclude calendars, search results and unrelated hosts.
  • Check the project logs for refused, redirected and filtered URLs.

The mirror stopped partway through

Reopen the existing HTTrack project and continue it; retain its cache so already downloaded files can be reused. If the project was deleted, you will need to rebuild it and review the scope before restarting.

The offline page still contacts the original site

Inspect the HTML for absolute URLs and scripts that point online. Link conversion can rewrite ordinary document links, but it cannot make every API call, login flow or third-party widget work offline.

Performance, storage and reliability considerations

  • One page: browser saving is fastest to set up and usually produces the smallest operational burden.
  • Many pages: a mirror can consume substantial disk space because each page may bring images, CSS, fonts and scripts. Set a finite scope before starting.
  • Repeatability: Wget scripts and HTTrack projects are easier to rerun consistently than manual saves.
  • Verification: compare representative pages, inspect image files and read crawler logs. “Complete” describes a format or operation, not a guarantee that every dynamic asset was captured.

Or skip the browser setup

If your real goal is a rendered image or PDF rather than an editable offline website, ScreenshotNeo runs the capture in a browser and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one request. It can load lazy images, wait for a selector, delay or network idle, select one element, set a viewport or device preset, use dark mode and retina scale, run custom CSS or JavaScript, click before capture, hide selectors, block ads or resource types, supply cookies and headers, set timezone or geolocation, resize images, cache with a chosen TTL, create signed links, run asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks and capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call. An OpenAPI specification, usage API and MCP server are included; the MCP tools are take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.

Use downloaded copies responsibly

HTTrack’s current command-line guidance identifies itself as HTTrack, obeys robots.txt and sends a Referer by default. Use a reasonable pace and narrow scope, especially on a site you do not control. Downloading a page does not automatically grant rights to republish its text, images or other media; permissions and exceptions depend on the content and your jurisdiction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I save a webpage as one file with all images embedded?

The documented Firefox complete-page format creates an HTML file plus a companion folder rather than one self-contained file. Keep both together.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will these methods save a webpage exactly as it looks online?

Not reliably. Static tools may miss JavaScript-generated assets, and browser saves may not preserve interactive behavior or original link structure.

Which method should I use for a whole website?

Use HTTrack with a bounded scope, filters and log review. A browser save is intended for one page, not a site-wide mirror.
