What’s an MCP Server? A Clear Guide to Hosts, Clients, Tools and Transports

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An MCP server is software that implements the server side of the Model Context Protocol (MCP). It makes capabilities or context available to an MCP client, which is connected to an AI application (the host). Depending on its implementation, a server can expose executable tools, data resources, reusable prompts, or a combination of them. It can run locally or remotely.

MCP standardizes how the pieces exchange messages; it does not make every server interchangeable or decide how an AI application uses the results. The server’s actual powers, permissions and user experience depend on its implementation.

MCP in one sentence

Think of MCP as a standardized connection between an AI application and outside capabilities. The AI host maintains a client connection to an MCP server, discovers what that server offers, and can then request a tool call, resource or prompt through the protocol.

The “plug and socket” analogy is useful but limited. MCP defines message formats, capabilities and transports. It does not define the business logic inside a server, guarantee that two servers offer the same functions, or make a tool safe merely because it is MCP-compatible.

How the host, client, server and protocol fit together

Part What it does Typical example
Host The AI application that coordinates connections and decides how returned information or actions fit into a conversation or workflow. Claude Code or Claude Desktop.
Client A component maintained by the host for one particular server connection. It handles protocol communication on the host’s behalf. A client instance created for a database server.
Server The program that provides capabilities through MCP. It may wrap an API, database, file system or another service. A server exposing a query tool and database resources.
Protocol The message and capability rules that let compatible clients and servers exchange requests and results. MCP messages carried over stdio or Streamable HTTP.

A host can coordinate more than one client, and therefore more than one server. A server does not have to be a separate physical machine: “server” describes its software role. A local process and a cloud service can both be MCP servers.

What an MCP server can provide

Tools: actions the model can request

Tools are executable functions. A server might provide a function to query a database, call an external API, transform a document or perform a calculation. Clients can list available tools and call a selected tool with structured inputs.

Tool exposure is not the same as blanket permission. The official tools guidance says users should be able to deny invocations and that applications should clearly show which tools are exposed and when they are used. A host may add confirmation prompts, policy checks or other controls before a consequential action runs.

Resources: context supplied to the host

Resources are data or content that an AI application can use as context. They can represent file contents, database records, API responses or other readable information. A resource generally supplies information; it does not automatically grant the model permission to modify the underlying system.

Prompts: reusable interaction patterns

Prompts are reusable templates that structure an interaction, such as an instruction set, example conversation or task-specific starting point. A server may expose prompts, tools, resources, only one of these categories, or none beyond what its use case requires.

What happens during a typical MCP request

  1. Connection: the host creates a client for the selected server using a supported transport.
  2. Initialization: client and server exchange protocol information and capabilities.
  3. Discovery: the client asks what tools, resources or prompts are available, commonly through list operations.
  4. Invocation or retrieval: the host’s AI workflow selects a tool to call or a resource/prompt to read and sends structured parameters.
  5. Result: the server returns a result or an error. The host decides how to present or use it.
  6. Ongoing events: supported notifications can report changes, progress or updated availability.

MCP messages use JSON-RPC 2.0. The protocol’s data layer defines message structure, capability discovery and features; the transport layer carries those messages over a communication channel. Exact method names and behavior can change with the protocol revision and SDK, so implementation code should target a named version instead of copying an old example without checking compatibility.

Local stdio versus remote Streamable HTTP

stdio for a local process

With stdio, the host starts or connects to a local process and communicates through standard input and output. The architecture guidance describes local stdio servers as typically serving one MCP client and avoiding network overhead.

  • Good fit: a developer tool that reads local project files or runs on one workstation.
  • Advantages: simple process isolation, no listening network port and straightforward local credentials.
  • Costs: every user or host needs the runtime and server installation; sharing one instance across many clients is not the usual model.

Streamable HTTP for a remote service

Streamable HTTP carries MCP communication over HTTP. Remote servers typically serve many clients. Standard HTTP authentication methods can be used, and the architecture guidance recommends OAuth for obtaining authentication tokens.

  • Good fit: a centrally deployed service, shared data source or server used by multiple hosts.
  • Advantages: centralized updates, controlled network access and service-wide observability.
  • Costs: authentication, authorization, TLS, rate limits, availability and tenant isolation become deployment responsibilities.

Transport choice follows the access pattern, not the word “server.” A local stdio implementation is still a server; a remote HTTP endpoint is not automatically more capable or trustworthy.

Choosing or evaluating an MCP server

There is no universal “best” MCP server. Compare an implementation against the host and the consequences of what it can do.

Capabilities and data scope

  • Which tools, resources and prompts are actually exposed?
  • Are inputs narrowly typed and validated, or can a tool accept unrestricted commands?
  • Does the server have read-only access, write access, or permission to delete or publish data?

Deployment and compatibility

  • Does the target host support the required transport?
  • Which MCP specification revision and SDK version does the server implement?
  • For a local server, are the runtime, environment variables and file permissions available on every workstation?
  • For a remote server, are HTTPS, authentication, token expiry and concurrent clients handled?

Operational controls

  • Can a user review and deny high-impact tool calls?
  • Are tool invocations, failures and authentication events visible in logs?
  • Are credentials scoped to the minimum data and actions needed?
  • What happens when an upstream API times out or returns malformed data?

Security and trust boundaries

An MCP connection can expose data and actions in external systems. Before enabling one, identify the credentials it uses, the systems it can reach, and the changes its tools can make. MCP compatibility alone does not establish that a server is trustworthy.

Use least-privilege credentials, separate read-only and write-capable tools where practical, and require confirmation for destructive or externally visible operations. The application should make exposed tools and invocation events clear, while the user retains a meaningful ability to deny a call. Treat server code and dependencies as software you must evaluate, not as trusted protocol components.

Specification and SDK version considerations

The MCP project announced a specification release dated 2026-07-28. That release describes a stateless protocol core, authorization changes and cache hints for list/read results. The official TypeScript SDK v2 documentation identifies v2 as the stable line implementing that specification and says it supports Node.js, Bun and Deno.

Those details are version-specific. A server built for an earlier revision may differ in initialization, authorization or transport behavior. Pin a compatible SDK, document the protocol revision you target, and verify the host’s supported version before deploying.

MCP lead maintainers reported close to half a billion downloads per month across Tier 1 SDKs, with TypeScript and Python SDKs each exceeding one billion total downloads. Those are figures reported by the project maintainers, not an independent measurement, and they indicate reported adoption rather than a guarantee about any particular server’s quality.

Troubleshooting common MCP problems

The host cannot start a stdio server

Likely causes: missing runtime, wrong executable path, unavailable environment variable or a server writing logs to stdout. Fix: run the command directly under the same user, verify the working directory and environment, and send diagnostic logs to stderr so stdout remains available for protocol messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Initialization or capability discovery fails

Likely causes: incompatible protocol revisions, malformed JSON-RPC, or a client expecting a capability the server does not advertise. Fix: confirm host and server SDK versions, inspect the initialization exchange, and implement only the capabilities you declare.

A remote connection returns 401 or 403

Likely causes: missing, expired or incorrectly scoped credentials. Fix: verify the authorization scheme, token audience and expiry; for OAuth deployments, repeat the documented token flow and check server-side scope enforcement.

A tool call times out

Likely causes: a slow upstream API, blocked network access or an operation too large for the request timeout. Fix: add bounded timeouts, return actionable errors, reduce input size, and consider an asynchronous job pattern for long operations.

The model performs an unexpected action

Likely causes: a tool description that is too broad, excessive credentials or missing user confirmation. Fix: narrow the tool’s schema and permissions, show the proposed arguments, require approval for consequential calls, and review invocation logs.

Where screenshot automation fits

If an MCP workflow needs webpage images, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf—can be used by Claude, Cursor or another MCP client. It is designed to remove cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed, while bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed. Responses identify the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

For a direct API call, use the documented endpoint:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options, including full-page and element capture, device presets, dark mode, custom CSS or JavaScript, waiting rules, request blocking, cookies and headers, geolocation, PDF output, caching, signed links, webhooks and bulk capture.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an MCP server the same thing as an API server?

Not necessarily. An MCP server can wrap an API, but it presents capabilities through MCP’s client-server protocol and may also expose resources or prompts. An ordinary API server does not become an MCP server unless it implements MCP.

Can one host connect to multiple MCP servers?

Yes. A host can maintain separate clients for multiple servers and combine their results, subject to the host’s compatibility, permissions and user controls.

Does MCP require a cloud server?

No. MCP supports local processes over stdio as well as remote services over Streamable HTTP.

Can an MCP server access files or databases automatically?

Only if its implementation is granted that access and exposes functionality for it. The protocol itself does not grant permissions.

The Bottom Line

An MCP server is the capability provider in an AI application’s MCP connection. It can expose tools, resources and prompts locally or remotely, while the host and client manage the interaction. Evaluate the implementation’s version, transport, permissions and oversight—not just whether it carries the MCP label.
