For a quick screenshot of part of your screen in Windows 10 or Windows 11, press Windows logo key + Shift + S, select the area, then paste it into an email, document, or compatible chat with Ctrl + V. For the whole screen, press Print Screen to copy it, or Windows logo key + Print Screen to save an image in PicturesScreenshots. Use Snipping Tool when you need to crop, mark up, save, or share the capture.
Choose the screenshot method that fits
Windows includes several ways to capture a still image without installing an app. The main difference is what gets captured and whether Windows copies the image for immediate pasting or saves a file. The shortcuts below are documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11 by Microsoft’s Snipping Tool and Windows keyboard-shortcut guidance.

Key labels vary: Print Screen may appear as PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. On some PCs, Print Screen is configured to open screen snipping rather than immediately copy the whole screen. If that is not the behavior you want, use the explicit Windows + Shift + S shortcut for a selection.
Take a screenshot of part of the screen
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The screen dims and the snipping controls appear.
- Choose a capture shape if needed, then select the part of the screen you want. A rectangular selection is useful for most screenshots; freeform selection is available when you need an irregular outline.
- Release the mouse or touch input to complete the capture. Windows copies the snip to the clipboard.
- To send it immediately, open the destination app, click where the image should go, and press Ctrl + V.
- To edit or save it first, select the screenshot notification that appears after capture. This opens the capture in Snipping Tool.
If the notification disappears before you select it, open Snipping Tool and use the capture there, or take the screenshot again. Pasting is the fastest route when the image is already suitable; opening the editor is useful when it needs a crop, markup, or a file copy.

Capture a whole screen or one window
Copy the whole screen for immediate pasting
Press Print Screen, then switch to an app that accepts images and press Ctrl + V. This is convenient when you want to paste directly into an email, document, or messaging app and do not need a separate image file. If your PC opens the snipping overlay instead, use Windows + Shift + S for a selected capture, or check the Print Screen behavior setting described below.
Save the whole screen as an image
Press Windows logo key + Print Screen. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut reference says the screenshot is saved in the Screenshots folder inside Pictures. Open File Explorer and go to Pictures > Screenshots to find it. This shortcut is preferable when you need an attachment or want to keep the image independently of the clipboard.
Capture the active window
- Click the window you want to capture so it is active.
- Press Alt + Print Screen.
- Open the destination app and press Ctrl + V, or paste into Snipping Tool or another image-capable app if you want to edit or save it.
This method captures the active window rather than the entire display. Confirm that the intended app is active before pressing the shortcut, especially if multiple windows overlap.

Edit, save, or share with Snipping Tool
Snipping Tool supports freeform, rectangular, window, and full-screen still-image captures. After a capture opens in the tool, you can mark it up, crop it, save it, or choose Share from the app menu. The exact choices available in the share flow depend on the apps configured on your PC.

Some optional Snipping Tool enhancements have a device restriction: Microsoft says Perfect screenshot and Color picker are available only on a Windows 11 Copilot+ PC. They are not required for ordinary screenshots, cropping, markup, saving, or sharing.
Send the screenshot in an email or message
There are two practical ways to send a capture. For the quickest handoff, capture it and paste with Ctrl + V into the message or document. This works only when the destination app supports pasted images. For an attachment or a copy you want to keep, save the screenshot first, then use the recipient app’s normal attach-file workflow. The steps for attaching differ between email and messaging apps.

- Decide whether you need an editable/attachable file or simply an image inside the message.
- For an inline image, capture with Windows + Shift + S or Alt + Print Screen, then paste with Ctrl + V.
- For a file, use Windows + Print Screen or save the snip from Snipping Tool.
- Before sending, check that the screenshot shows the intended screen area and does not include unrelated or sensitive information.

Capture a menu that disappears
Some menus close as soon as you press a key or click elsewhere. Snipping Tool’s shortcut list describes a capture delay of 1–5 seconds, which gives you time to open the menu before the screenshot is taken.
- Open Snipping Tool and locate its delay control.
- Choose a delay from 1 to 5 seconds.
- Start the snip, then open or hover over the menu you want to show.
- When the delay ends, select the relevant area if prompted, and review the result in Snipping Tool.
For a menu or tooltip, leave enough of the surrounding app visible to make the image understandable, but crop away unrelated content afterward if needed.

If your keyboard has no Print Screen key
Microsoft’s keyboard-shortcut-for-print-screen guidance gives Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a fallback for devices without a PrtScn button. Laptop Fn mappings differ, so if that combination does nothing, consult the device maker’s keyboard documentation. You can also use Windows + Shift + S for a selected screenshot without relying on a dedicated Print Screen key.

Windows + Shift + S does not open the snipping controls
- Press the keys together: Windows logo key, Shift, and S.
- If you use an external keyboard, confirm that its Windows key is enabled and that the keyboard is connected and responding.
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and start a capture there if the shortcut remains unavailable.
Print Screen opens the overlay instead of copying the full screen
Print Screen behavior can be configured to open screen snipping, so it is not identical on every Windows PC. For a specific-area capture, use the overlay. For a full-screen image saved directly, use Windows + Print Screen; for a full-screen image to paste, check the keyboard behavior setting or use the capture workflow available in Snipping Tool.
Ctrl + V does not paste an image
- Take the capture again and confirm it completed before switching apps.
- Click inside the destination field or document, then press Ctrl + V.
- Try a destination known to accept images, such as an image-capable document or message composer. Some text fields do not accept pasted images.
- If the recipient app requires a file, save the capture and attach that file instead.
You cannot find a screenshot file
Only the file-saving shortcut or an explicit Snipping Tool save creates a file you can browse to. A clipboard capture is meant to be pasted and may not appear in Pictures. For Windows + Print Screen, check Pictures > Screenshots; for a snip, save it from Snipping Tool and note the location shown in the save dialog.

The wrong window or extra content appears
For one app, click it first and use Alt + Print Screen. For a smaller detail, use Windows + Shift + S and select only that area, then crop or mark it up in Snipping Tool if necessary.
