Start with your device’s normal screenshot shortcut. On Android, press Power + Volume Down, or hold Power and tap Screenshot when that option appears. On iPhone, use the button combination for your model, or trigger a screenshot with Siri, AssistiveTouch, or Back Tap. If screenshots work everywhere except one app or screen, the app is probably enforcing a capture restriction. There is no general, reliable, or approved button that overrides that protection. Use the app’s own export, download, print, or share function, or request an authorized copy instead.
First, determine whether the phone or the app is blocking capture
Take a screenshot on the home screen or in another ordinary app. If it succeeds there but fails in one application, your phone controls are probably functioning and the individual app is restricting capture. If screenshots fail everywhere, troubleshoot the device shortcut, storage, permissions, or manufacturer-specific behavior first.
Android’s standard screenshot methods
- Press Power + Volume Down at the same time and release quickly.
- If that does not work, hold the Power button for a few seconds and tap Screenshot, if your device shows that command.
- On Android 12 and later, tap Capture more after taking a screenshot when the current screen supports scrolling. This option is available only on scrollable screens that allow capture.
- If neither method works on ordinary screens, consult your phone manufacturer’s support instructions. Button combinations and menus can vary by model.
iPhone’s standard methods
- On an iPhone without a Home button, quickly press Side + Volume Up.
- On an iPhone with a Home button, quickly press Home + Side (or Home + Top on older models).
- Apple also documents Siri, AssistiveTouch, and Back Tap as alternate screenshot triggers.
These controls create a normal screenshot; they do not promise a capture from a protected app. Apple’s iPhone guidance describes ordinary capture methods, not a way to override an app’s restriction.
Why a restricted screenshot may be black or missing
Android’s FLAG_SECURE protection
Android apps can mark a window with FLAG_SECURE. Android documents this flag as preventing screenshots and preventing the protected window from appearing on non-secure displays such as casting. A screenshot can therefore be blank or black, and mirroring or recording is not a dependable substitute. The behavior is intentional: the app is declaring that its content should not be copied through ordinary system capture.

Screenshot detection is different from blocking
Android 14 provides a screenshot-detection API that can notify an app when a screenshot is taken. Detection and prevention are separate features. The detection API does not itself bypass or disable FLAG_SECURE; an app can detect capture, block it, or do neither, depending on its implementation.
Why one app behaves differently
Financial, identity, enterprise, streaming, and other security-sensitive apps may protect selected screens while leaving the rest of the interface capturable. A black image, an error toast, or no saved file on only those screens is consistent with an app-level policy, not proof that your camera, storage, or screenshot buttons are broken.
Use an authorized way to keep the information
Before trying another capture method, check whether you are allowed to retain or share the content and whether the app provides a supported route. Choose the option that preserves the format and context you need while keeping sensitive data from leaving the device unnecessarily.

Look for an in-app export or download
- Use commands labeled Export, Download, Save, Share, or Generate report.
- For statements, receipts, tickets, or records, look for a PDF or email-delivery option rather than an image.
- Use the app’s print action when it offers one and you are authorized to print the record.
Ask the service or administrator
Contact the app provider, account owner, school, employer, or device administrator and request an approved copy or an enabled export feature. Explain the screen and the format you need. An administrator may be able to provide a report without weakening the app’s security policy.

Do not treat recording or mirroring as a guaranteed workaround
Because FLAG_SECURE also blocks display on non-secure surfaces, screen recording, casting, and common mirroring setups may show a blank region or fail in the same way. A third-party utility that claims to defeat a protected window may violate the app’s terms, expose private data, or conflict with Google Play requirements.
What Google Play requires
Google Play Console Help states: “For security and privacy purposes, all apps distributed on Google Play are required to respect the FLAG_SECURE declaration of other apps.” The policy also prohibits apps from facilitating or creating workarounds. A narrow accessibility-tool exception has conditions that prohibit transmitting, saving, or caching protected content for access outside the device. In practice, do not install or recommend a tool solely because it promises to defeat another app’s capture block.

Troubleshooting common failures
The button combination does nothing
Press the buttons simultaneously and release quickly; holding them too long can open the power menu or change volume. Try the Power-button menu method on Android, then check your manufacturer’s model-specific instructions. On iPhone, verify whether your model has a Home button and use the matching combination.
The screenshot is black or contains a blank rectangle
Test another app. If only the protected app produces a blank image, treat it as intentional capture protection. Look for an export or report feature instead of repeatedly changing screenshot utilities.

The screenshot notification appears but no file is saved
Check available storage and the device’s Screenshots album or folder. If ordinary apps save correctly and the restricted app does not, the app is likely rejecting capture rather than failing to write the file.

Scrolling capture is unavailable
Android’s Capture more appears only on supported, scrollable screens that permit capture. A protected or non-scrollable screen will not necessarily offer it.
A work profile or administrator blocks screenshots
Enterprise and school management can impose additional restrictions. Ask the administrator for the approved export process. Do not remove management controls or copy protected work data to an unmanaged service without permission.
Privacy and authorization checks before saving or sharing
- Confirm that you own the account or have permission to retain the content.
- Remove unrelated personal information when an export tool supports redaction.
- Prefer an on-device or provider-generated document when the content contains financial, health, identity, or workplace data.
- Check recipients and cloud-sharing settings before sending a file.
- Keep the original record when an image would omit metadata, page context, or verification details.

Limits you should understand
No universal method can turn a protected app screen into an authorized screenshot. Android’s documented behavior applies to Android windows using FLAG_SECURE; it does not prove that every restriction on every platform uses the same mechanism. Apple’s cited protected-content documentation concerns Vision Pro and should not be generalized to every iPhone app. Individual apps may offer exceptions or exports, but availability is app-specific.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the app owner tell that I tried to screenshot?
Some Android 14 apps can use the screenshot-detection API to receive a notification that a screenshot occurred. Detection is separate from blocking, and behavior depends on the app.
Will changing screenshot apps remove the restriction?
Usually not. If the app protects its window, another screenshot utility may receive the same blank or blocked content. Use an authorized export or request a copy instead.
Does Android’s Capture more bypass protected screens?
No. Capture more is for supported scrollable screens that permit capture; it is not documented as a bypass for protected windows.
