To capture a web page exactly 10 seconds after it opens, automate the browser in this order: navigate, wait 10,000 milliseconds, take the screenshot, and close the browser. The Playwright example below saves a full-page PNG and can be adapted for a viewport image, a single element, JPEG, or WebP.
Playwright: open the page, wait 10 seconds, and save the screenshot
Install Playwright and its browser binaries first:
npm install playwright
npx playwright install
Create screenshot-after-10s.js:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.waitForTimeout(10000);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
Run it with:
node screenshot-after-10s.js
page.waitForTimeout() uses milliseconds, so 10000 is precisely ten seconds. The screenshot call runs only after navigation has completed according to the selected waitUntil condition and the additional delay has elapsed.
What each line does
chromium.launch(): starts a Chromium browser process. Use{ headless: false }while debugging if you need to see the window.browser.newPage(): creates an isolated page with Playwright’s default viewport.page.goto(): opens the target URL. Replacehttps://example.comwith the page you need.waitForTimeout(10000): enforces the literal ten-second pause after navigation reaches the chosen readiness state.page.screenshot(): writes the image to disk.fullPage: truecaptures the entire document rather than only the visible viewport.browser.close(): releases the browser process even after the capture is complete.
Choose the right navigation readiness condition
The ten-second delay answers “how long after navigation should I capture?” It does not by itself define when navigation has begun or whether the page is usable. Playwright’s goto method accepts these readiness choices:
| Option | Meaning | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
commit |
Returns once the response is received and document loading starts. | When you intentionally want the delay to include most of the page load. |
domcontentloaded |
Returns when the initial HTML has been parsed. | When the page’s important structure is available before scripts and images finish. |
load |
Returns after the load event, including load-event resources. | A practical default for a normal page screenshot. |
networkidle |
Waits for a period with no active network connections. | Only when you specifically need a quiet network; continuously polling sites may never become idle. |
The example uses load. The ten-second timer starts after that condition succeeds. If redirects, slow servers, or a missing response prevent navigation from completing, the default navigation timeout can expire before the timer starts.

Capture a viewport, a full page, or one element
Visible viewport only
await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.png' });
Omit fullPage (or set it to false) to capture only what is visible in the current viewport.
Full document
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
Full-page mode scrolls through the document as needed and is useful for an archive or a long article. Extremely tall pages can produce large files and may expose lazy-loading behavior that differs from a simple viewport capture.
A single element
await page.locator('main').screenshot({ path: 'main.webp', type: 'webp' });
Locator screenshots wait for the target to be actionable and bring it into view before capturing it. Replace main with a stable CSS selector such as #invoice or [data-testid="receipt"].
Rank #2
PNG, JPEG, and WebP
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.jpg', type: 'jpeg', quality: 85 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.webp', type: 'webp', quality: 85 });
PNG is lossless and preserves text sharply. JPEG and WebP can reduce file size; JPEG’s quality value applies from 0 to 100. Do not add a quality value when writing PNG.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Wait for content instead of merely waiting for time
A fixed sleep is correct when the requirement is specifically “ten seconds after opening.” It is a poor substitute for a readiness signal in a test or production capture pipeline: a fast page wastes time, while a slow page may still be changing when the image is taken. Playwright documentation warns that timeout-only tests are inherently flaky, and Selenium describes the same race caused by JavaScript continuing after a ready state.
Wait for a selector, then apply the ten-second rule
await page.goto('https://example.com/dashboard', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.locator('[data-loaded="true"]').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.waitForTimeout(10000);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'dashboard.png', fullPage: true });
This waits for the application’s own signal before beginning the required ten-second interval. If elapsed time is not part of the requirement, remove the timeout and capture immediately after the selector appears.

Wait for a specific text or state
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.getByText('Report ready').waitFor();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'report.png' });
Use a stable selector or state that represents the content you need. Avoid depending on animation completion unless the animation itself is what you are documenting.
Make the capture reproducible
Set a viewport and device scale
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
A fixed viewport prevents screenshots from changing with the machine’s display. A higher deviceScaleFactor produces a denser image but increases memory use and file size.
Control media, locale, and authentication
const context = await browser.newContext({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 },
locale: 'en-US',
colorScheme: 'light'
});
const page = await context.newPage();
For a logged-in page, create a context with the required cookies or storage state. Keep credentials outside source code, and never save a screenshot containing secrets to a publicly served directory.

Make dynamic pages deterministic
- Disable or hide rotating banners and timestamps with injected CSS when they are irrelevant.
- Use a fixed timezone and locale if dates or number formatting affect the pixels.
- Block analytics, advertisements, or third-party resources only when doing so matches the screenshot’s purpose; blocking can alter layout.
- Use a sufficiently long navigation timeout for known slow pages, but keep the explicit ten-second delay separate so its meaning remains clear.
Selenium and Puppeteer equivalents
Selenium with Python
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
import time
options = Options()
options.add_argument('--headless=new')
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get('https://example.com')
time.sleep(10)
driver.save_screenshot('screenshot.png')
finally:
driver.quit()
Selenium’s get waits for the browser’s navigation readiness, but JavaScript may continue changing the page. For a robust workflow, replace or supplement time.sleep(10) with an explicit wait for the element or state that matters, then retain ten seconds only when the elapsed interval is required.
Puppeteer with Node.js
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load' });
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 10000));
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Puppeteer’s page.screenshot() can save an image or return image bytes/base64 when requested. Its API names differ from Playwright’s, but the sequence remains navigation, delay, capture, and cleanup.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “Executable doesn’t exist” or browser launch failure | Playwright or Chromium binaries were not installed. | Run npx playwright install; in a restricted Linux environment install the required system dependencies as well. |
| Navigation timeout before ten seconds | The server, redirect chain, or a blocked resource did not satisfy goto‘s readiness condition. |
Check the URL, inspect redirects, choose a less strict readiness condition, or set a justified navigation timeout. |
| Screenshot is blank | The page failed, requires authentication, is blocked by a bot check, or content is painted after the capture. | Inspect the page in headed mode, verify status and login state, wait for a meaningful selector, and capture after the content is visible. |
| Cookie banner or chat widget covers the page | Those elements are part of the rendered page at capture time. | Click the consent action, hide the selector, or use a clean-capture service that handles common overlays before the shot. |
| Lazy images are missing in full-page mode | The site loads images only after scrolling or after an application event. | Scroll through the page, wait for image completion, or use a capture system designed to load lazy content. |
| Different pixels on each run | Animations, ads, fonts, time, locale, viewport, or third-party data changed. | Fix the context settings, wait for a stable selector, disable irrelevant motion, and control external resources. |
| File is too large | Full-page PNG at a large viewport or device scale creates many pixels. | Capture the viewport or an element, use WebP/JPEG, reduce scale, or resize after capture. |
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Ten seconds is a hard minimum only when you start the timer immediately after readiness. Navigation time is additional wall-clock time.
- Browser startup is expensive. For batch jobs, reuse a browser process and create separate contexts or pages, while closing each page in a
finallyblock. - Full-page captures use more memory. Limit concurrency when taking many long screenshots.
- Retries need idempotence. A retry can trigger a form submission, purchase, or other side effect. Prefer a read-only URL and make the page safe to reload.
- Record the result. Store the target URL, capture time, viewport, readiness condition, and whether the screenshot was full-page or element-only alongside the file.
- Respect access controls. Do not bypass authentication, robots policies, paywalls, or anti-bot controls without authorization.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API when you do not want to install or operate a browser. A request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; for a screenshot after a ten-second delay, use its delay option together with the target URL. See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

Practical checklist
- Confirm whether “after 10 seconds” means ten seconds after navigation readiness or ten seconds after a specific element appears.
- Choose
load,domcontentloaded, or a selector-based gate that matches the page. - Use
10000milliseconds for the literal delay. - Set a fixed viewport, locale, color scheme, and authentication state when repeatability matters.
- Select viewport, full-page, or locator capture deliberately.
- Choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP according to fidelity and file-size needs.
- Close the page and browser in cleanup code, and log failures with the URL and readiness state.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the ten-second timer include the time spent downloading the page?
Not in the Playwright example: the timer starts only after page.goto reaches its selected readiness condition. The total elapsed time is navigation time plus 10,000 milliseconds.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I take the screenshot at exactly ten seconds if the page keeps animating?
You can request the capture after the delay, but rendering and file encoding still take a small amount of additional time. Freeze animations or wait for a stable application state when pixel timing matters.
Is a full-page screenshot the same as a screenshot of the visible browser window?
No. A viewport screenshot contains the currently visible area; fullPage: true captures the document’s full scrollable height.
