To add a screenshot to a Google Doc on a computer, place the cursor where the image belongs, choose Insert > Image > Upload from computer, select the screenshot, and click Insert or Open. The Google Docs app uses Insert > Image on Android and iPhone/iPad. You can also use Drive and Photos, Camera, By URL, drag-and-drop, or copy and paste.
Add a screenshot on a computer
This is the standard method when the screenshot is saved as a file on your computer.
- Open the document in Google Docs.
- Click at the exact point where the screenshot should appear. The image will be inserted at the cursor location.
- Open the Insert menu.
- Choose Image.
- Select Upload from computer.
- Browse to the screenshot, select it, and click Insert or Open (the button label depends on the file picker).
Google Docs places the image in the document immediately. Select it to reveal image and layout controls.
Choose a different image source
You do not have to save the screenshot locally first. Google Docs provides several sources from the same Insert > Image menu.

| Source | When to use it | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Upload from computer | The screenshot is a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or another supported image file on your computer. | Choose the file in the system file picker. |
| Drive & Photos | The screenshot is already stored in Google Drive or Google Photos. | Pick the image from the Drive or Photos browser that opens. |
| Camera | You want to take a new photo or capture an item with an available camera. | Grant camera access if prompted, take the image, and confirm it. |
| By URL | You have a direct link to an image or GIF instead of a local file. | Paste the image link and confirm the insertion. |
| Drag and drop | The image is visible in a folder or browser window beside the document. | Drag the image into the open document and release it where you want it. |
| Copy and paste | The screenshot is on the clipboard. | Copy the image, click in the document, and paste it with your operating system’s normal paste command. |
Google’s computer help describes By URL as inserting a link to an image or inserting a GIF. A web page address that merely displays a page is not the same as a direct image URL, so use the image’s own link.
Insert a screenshot from Android
- Open the document in the Google Docs app.
- Tap where the screenshot should go.
- Tap Insert.
- Tap Image.
- Choose where to get the image, such as your device’s photos or camera.
- Tap the screenshot or photo to insert it.
This is the Android workflow documented in Google Docs Editors Help. The wording of the source picker can vary with the Android version and the permissions you have granted.
Insert a screenshot from iPhone or iPad
- Open the document in the Google Docs app.
- Tap the insertion point.
- Tap Insert, then Image.
- Choose the source offered by the app, such as Photos or Camera.
- Tap the screenshot or photo.
If the image is in another app, copy it first, return to Google Docs, tap the document, and paste it. The documented iPhone and iPad path is Insert > Image.
Copy and paste a screenshot
From a computer
Take the screenshot with your operating system’s capture tool, copy the resulting image to the clipboard, click in Google Docs, and paste. If the capture tool saves a file instead, use Insert > Image > Upload from computer or drag the file into the document.

From a phone or tablet
Open the device’s screenshot preview or Photos app, use its copy command if available, switch to Google Docs, tap the destination, and paste. If paste is unavailable, save the screenshot and use Insert > Image from the Docs app.
Resize, move, and wrap text around the screenshot
Click or tap the inserted image to select it. On a computer, use the image controls to choose one of these layouts:
- In line — treats the screenshot like a character in the paragraph.
- Wrap text — lets text flow around the image.
- Break text — keeps text above and below the image rather than beside it.
- Behind text — places the image behind the document text.
- In front of text — places the image above the text.
Drag a corner handle to change the size while preserving the image’s proportions. Drag the image itself to reposition it according to the selected layout. For a precise placement, first choose the layout that matches the intended text flow, then adjust the size and position.
Pageless versus Pages format
Google says text-wrapping and position controls are unavailable in Pageless format. If those controls do not appear, switch the document to Pages format, then select the image again. In Pageless mode, an inline image may still be suitable when you simply need the screenshot between paragraphs.

- Insert the original capture rather than a screenshot of a compressed preview when text must be legible.
- Resize from a corner so labels and interface details are not stretched.
- Use In line for a step-by-step procedure where the image should stay attached to a paragraph.
- Use Wrap text only when the surrounding text remains easy to read; switch to Break text when a narrow image column makes paragraphs awkward.
- Use Pages format when you need wrapping or position controls.
Troubleshooting
The screenshot appears in the wrong place
Undo the insertion, click the intended location inside the document text, and insert the image again. If the image is already present, select it and choose In line before moving it through the surrounding paragraphs.
There is no Wrap text or position option
Check whether the document is in Pageless format. Google Docs does not provide text-wrapping and position controls there; switch to Pages format and select the image again.
Upload from computer cannot find the file
Confirm that the screenshot was saved where you expect it and that you are browsing the correct folder. If the image is open in another window, drag it into the document or copy and paste it instead.
By URL does not insert the expected image
Use a direct image link, not the address of a web page containing the image. If the link is not publicly reachable or no longer serves the image, download the screenshot and upload the local file.

Paste does nothing on a phone
Save the screenshot to the device’s Photos or gallery app, then use the Docs app’s Insert > Image path. Clipboard permissions and the source app can affect whether a pasted image is available.
The screenshot is too small or blurry
Reinsert the original capture at a larger source resolution. Enlarging a low-resolution image in Docs cannot recreate detail that was not present in the original.
The image is hidden behind text
Select it and change the layout to In line, Break text, or In front of text. The current layout determines whether document text can cover the image.

If the page you need to capture is cluttered by consent banners, newsletter popups, or chat widgets, ScreenshotNeo can create the image through one GET request. It accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Or skip the browser setup
Use the API call below, save the returned image, and insert that file in Google Docs with Insert > Image > Upload from computer. The full parameter reference is in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add more than one screenshot to the same Google Doc?
Yes. Repeat the insertion process at each cursor position; each image has its own size and layout controls.
Does inserting a screenshot change the original file?
No. Uploading, pasting, or selecting an image adds a copy to the document; edits to the document image do not replace the source screenshot.
Can I insert a screenshot into a shared document?
You need permission to edit the document. If you can only view or comment, the image-insertion controls may not be available.
