This keeps text selectable and usually creates a smaller, searchable file. If you need the page to look exactly as it does on screen—including a long dashboard, infographic or dynamic layout—capture a full-page screenshot first, then convert that image to PDF. The two methods solve different problems: print produces a reflowed document, while screenshot-to-PDF preserves visual arrangement.
Choose the right PDF method

Before either method, let the page finish loading. Expand accordions you want included, scroll through lazy-loaded sections, dismiss obstructive dialogs and confirm that charts or images have appeared. A PDF records the current rendered state; it will not automatically include content that has not loaded.
Save a webpage as a PDF with Print
Google Chrome (Windows, Linux and macOS)
- Open the page you want to preserve.
- Choose File > Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on Mac.
- In the print window, set the destination to Save as PDF (on macOS, use the PDF menu in the system dialog if Chrome hands off to it).
- Choose the page range, paper size, orientation, scale and margins. Turn on background graphics when colored panels or branding are important.
- Inspect the preview for clipped tables, blank image areas and unexpected page breaks, then click Save.
Mozilla Firefox
- Open the page and select the application menu, then Print.
- In print preview, set Destination to Save to PDF.
- Adjust orientation, page range, scale, paper size, margins and headers/footers. Enable background printing if the design depends on color.
- Review every preview page and save the file.
Firefox can also offer a simplified reading format on supported pages. It removes much of the site chrome, which is useful for an article but unsuitable when you must document the original design.
Microsoft Edge
- Select Settings and more > Print, press Ctrl+P (Windows) or Command+P (macOS), or right-click the page and choose Print.
- Open More settings and enable Background graphics if colors, images or panels disappear.
- Set paper size, orientation, scale, margins, page range and any headers or footers.
- Check the preview and save to PDF.

Capture the entire scrolling page as an image PDF
Edge Screenshot
When print preview changes the layout, use Edge’s built-in Screenshot tool. Press Ctrl+Shift+S, choose Capture full page, and save the resulting image. This captures content beyond the viewport—the portions you would normally have to scroll to see. Open the saved image and use your operating system’s Print command with a PDF destination, or insert it into an image/PDF application and export as PDF.
Because the result is one tall image (or an image sequence), text may not be selectable. Choose a high enough scale to keep small type legible, and expect a larger file than a text PDF.
Other desktop browsers
Chrome and Firefox do not expose the same built-in full-page workflow in every edition. If their print output is unacceptable, use the browser’s available full-page capture command or an established capture extension, then print the saved image to PDF. Verify an extension’s current availability and publisher before installing it; browser stores and permissions change.
Safari and mobile devices
Safari on macOS
- Open the page and choose File > Export as PDF, or select File > Print and choose Save as PDF in the print dialog.
- Set the destination and file name, then save.
Export uses Safari’s rendered page and can differ from a screenshot. If exact appearance matters, capture the page as an image first and convert that image to PDF.
iPhone and iPad
- In Safari (or another browser), open the Share sheet.
- Choose Create PDF or Save to Files with PDF selected, depending on the iOS/iPadOS version.
- Pick a folder and save. For a long Safari page, use the screenshot thumbnail, select Full Page when offered, tap Done, then save or print the result as PDF.
Android
- Open the browser menu and choose Share or Print.
- In the system print dialog, select Save as PDF, choose paper settings and tap the save icon.
Android menus differ by manufacturer and browser version. If no full-page option appears, print the page or use a browser capture feature that explicitly supports scrolling pages.

Make print output match the page
- Inspect preview first: Look for clipped columns, missing colors, blank lazy-loaded sections and headings stranded at page bottoms.
- Enable backgrounds: Edge’s Background graphics option (and the equivalent in other dialogs) restores colored panels and some images.
- Change orientation: Landscape often prevents wide tables from being cut off.
- Adjust scale and margins: Reduce scale slightly or choose narrower margins when content touches the edge. Increasing scale can improve readability but create more page breaks.
- Choose paper size deliberately: Letter and A4 produce different pagination. Select the size expected by the recipient or printer.
- Control headers and footers: Disable automatic URLs, dates and titles for a clean record; leave them enabled when provenance is important.
- Load dynamic content: Scroll through the page, wait for network activity to settle and expand collapsed sections before printing or capturing.
- Remove clutter carefully: Reader modes can eliminate navigation and advertisements, but they also change the source design.
When a screenshot PDF is the better record
Use the screenshot route for visual regression evidence, design reviews, dashboards, long infographics, maps and pages whose CSS changes substantially for print. It also helps when JavaScript widgets, fixed headers or responsive components are rearranged by the print stylesheet. The trade-off is accessibility: an image PDF may not support text search, copy, reflow or screen-reader reading without OCR. If the recipient needs accessible text, keep a print-generated PDF as well or provide the original URL and an HTML export.

Reliability, privacy and cost considerations
Browser workflow
Local printing keeps the page data on your device and costs nothing beyond your existing browser. It is easy to inspect visually, but results depend on browser version, print CSS, fonts, viewport, login state and whether content has finished loading. Save the source URL and capture date when the PDF is evidence of a changing page.

API workflow
An API provides consistent viewport and wait settings for scheduled captures, but you must protect the access key and consider whether sending a private or authenticated URL to a third party is acceptable. Use custom headers or cookies only when authorized, and avoid placing secrets in public URLs or client-side code.

The PDF is missing colors or backgrounds
Enable background graphics, then preview again. Some sites deliberately disable background printing; use a full-page screenshot when the visual background is essential.
Columns or tables are clipped
Switch to landscape, reduce scale, choose a larger paper size or narrow margins. If the layout still changes, capture the full page as an image.
Images or sections are blank
Wait for lazy loading, scroll through the page and retry. Disable aggressive content blocking for the capture, or use an API wait-for-selector/network-idle setting.

The page prints differently from the screen
That is expected when print CSS, responsive breakpoints or reader mode is involved. Use screenshot capture for visual fidelity and print-to-PDF for selectable text.
The full-page capture stops early
Check that the page is not inside an iframe, that infinite scrolling has finished, and that the browser or service reached the intended page height. Capture a specific element or use an API with a full-page option and an explicit wait.

Can I turn a screenshot into a single PDF page?
Yes. Open the image, choose Print, select a PDF destination and set scaling to fit the image to one page. A very tall screenshot may become unreadably small; multiple pages or a larger paper size can be better.

Will a PDF preserve clickable links?
Print-generated PDFs may preserve hyperlinks when the browser’s print pipeline supports them. A PDF made from a screenshot is pixels only, so its visible links are not clickable unless you add link annotations afterward.

How can I make a PDF accessible?
Prefer Print > Save as PDF for selectable text, then check the result with your PDF reader’s accessibility tools. An image-only PDF generally requires OCR and manual tagging.
Can I save a page that requires a login?
Use a logged-in browser session locally, or an authorized API request with the required cookies or headers. Never share credentials or capture content you do not have permission to access.
