To save an image as WebP, export it from an image editor such as Photoshop or GIMP, or convert it with a command-line tool such as Google’s cwebp or ImageMagick. Choose lossless encoding when preserving the source image’s quality is essential; choose lossy encoding when smaller files matter and you can accept some visual change. Keep the original until you have checked the WebP file, including its transparency, dimensions, color and any metadata you need.
Choose a WebP method
The right route depends on whether you are exporting one image while editing it or converting files repeatedly. A graphical editor makes it easier to inspect settings and compare the result. A command-line tool is more repeatable and can fit into scripts or batch workflows.

For any method, first decide whether you need to preserve image quality exactly, retain transparency, keep metadata, or reduce file size. These goals affect both the export settings and whether the output is suitable for its destination.
Save an image as WebP in Photoshop
Adobe documents native WebP support in Photoshop 23.2 and later. Its guidance says that 8-bit RGB Photoshop documents can be saved in WebP. If WebP is not available in your version or for your document, check the version and document color mode before assuming the format is unsupported.

- Open and edit the image in Photoshop.
- Choose File > Save a Copy.
- In the Format menu, select WebP.
- Choose lossy or lossless encoding, then adjust quality and metadata options as needed.
- Select OK to export the copy.
- Open the saved file and inspect it before using it in place of the original.
Use lossless when retaining the original image quality matters more than minimizing file size. For a lossy export, compare the result at the size it will actually appear; compression artifacts may be more apparent in fine detail, edges or gradients.
Export WebP from GIMP
GIMP’s WebP export dialog offers a lossless option as well as lossy quality controls. You can also choose whether to retain EXIF, IPTC, XMP, color profile and thumbnail data. The labels and available controls may vary by GIMP version, so review the export dialog shown by the version you are using.
- Open the image in GIMP.
- Choose File > Export As.
- Enter a filename ending in
.webp, choose a destination and select Export. - In the WebP export dialog, enable Lossless if you need to preserve source quality. Otherwise, adjust image quality and, where available, alpha quality for a lossy export.
- Choose whether to retain the metadata and color-profile information your workflow requires.
- Select Export, then reopen or preview the resulting file and check its appearance and transparency.
Lossy export can give a better compression ratio, but it changes image data. If the image includes transparency, check the edges against the backgrounds where it will be displayed; the alpha-quality setting can affect transparent areas.
Convert to WebP with Google’s cwebp
Google’s WebP utilities provide a scriptable conversion path. cwebp encodes JPEG, PNG or TIFF images into WebP; dwebp decodes a WebP image back to PNG. Google provides prebuilt archives for Windows, Linux and macOS. Install or unpack the appropriate utility for your operating system and make sure the executable is available from your terminal.

A basic conversion looks like this:
cwebp input.jpg -o output.webpReplace input.jpg with the path to your source image and output.webp with the desired destination. The same basic command can take a supported PNG or TIFF input. To request lossy output at a chosen quality, use the quality option:
cwebp -q 80 input.jpg -o output.webpThe quality value is an encoder setting, not a promise about the final file size or visual result. Compare the output against the original, especially if it contains text, fine patterns, sharp edges or gradients. For a lossless result, use the lossless option supported by cwebp:
cwebp -lossless input.png -o output.webpKeep input and output paths distinct so a conversion does not overwrite your source. To verify a WebP can be decoded, convert it back to PNG with dwebp:
dwebp output.webp -o check.pngThis produces a PNG for inspection; it does not restore detail discarded by a lossy WebP encode. For batch work, test the command on representative images first, then apply the selected settings to the rest of the files.

Convert with ImageMagick
ImageMagick can read and write WebP when its WebP delegate library is available in the installed build. A basic conversion is:
magick input.jpg -quality 80 output.webpThe documented default quality is 75 and the default method is 4. Set the quality explicitly when you need a reproducible command rather than relying on defaults. ImageMagick’s WebP encoder also exposes controls for lossless mode, alpha compression, method, target size, target PSNR and image-type hints. Those options are useful when you are tuning an established pipeline, but their effect depends on the source and intended output; inspect the resulting image and file size rather than assuming one setting is universally best.
If your ImageMagick installation reports that it cannot write WebP, check whether WebP support is present in that build. Installing or rebuilding with the necessary delegate support may be required; changing the command’s quality value cannot add a missing encoder.
Lossless or lossy: which should you use?
Lossless WebP preserves the source image quality, but its files are usually larger than lossy WebP. Lossy WebP can reduce file size at some visual cost. There is no single quality setting that guarantees the right balance for every photograph, illustration, screenshot or graphic.

- Choose lossless when preserving source quality is the priority, or when even subtle compression changes are unacceptable.
- Choose lossy when file size matters and you can review the output for visible artifacts.
- For transparency, inspect the alpha edges and confirm the destination supports WebP transparency.
- For either mode, retain the original until the exported file has been checked and accepted by the system that will use it.
Google’s WebP FAQ publishes a general claim of an average of 30% more compression than JPEG without loss of image quality. Treat that as Google’s broad published statement, not a guaranteed result for an individual image or a promise that a lossy conversion is visually identical. The result depends on the image and encoding choices.
Check the WebP before replacing the original
A successful export only confirms that a file was created; it does not establish that the file meets your needs. Before deleting, overwriting or uploading the source, check the practical details that often cause problems later.
- Appearance: Open the output and inspect it at its intended display size. For lossy output, look for artifacts in details, text, edges and smooth gradients.
- Transparency: If the source has transparent areas, preview the WebP against both light and dark backgrounds to spot halos or unexpectedly filled regions.
- Dimensions: Confirm that the pixel width and height have not changed unexpectedly.
- Color: Check that the image’s color and any required color profile are acceptable in the target application or website.
- Metadata: Verify whether EXIF, IPTC, XMP and other required metadata have been retained. Export settings differ by tool.
- Destination support: Confirm that the receiving website, app or workflow accepts WebP before replacing a format it currently requires.
- File size: Compare the resulting file with the source. A WebP file is not guaranteed to be smaller for every image and setting.

Troubleshoot common WebP problems
WebP does not appear in Photoshop’s Format menu
Adobe documents native support in Photoshop 23.2 and later for 8-bit RGB documents. Check the Photoshop version and the document’s mode and bit depth. If the document does not meet those conditions, use an exportable copy in a supported mode or convert it with another WebP-capable tool.

GIMP’s result looks worse than the source
Check whether Lossless was left unchecked. That makes the export lossy, where image quality and alpha quality affect the result. Enable lossless if fidelity is required, or raise quality and inspect again if you need lossy compression.
The command says WebP encoding is unavailable
For ImageMagick, verify that the installed build includes the WebP delegate library. For Google’s tools, confirm that the correct prebuilt utility for your operating system has been installed and that you are invoking cwebp, not dwebp, to encode an image.
The output is missing metadata or has an unexpected background
Review the metadata-retention choices in the editor’s export dialog and confirm that the color profile is retained if needed. For an image with transparency, check the export’s alpha settings and preview the result against different backgrounds. Do not assume that metadata or transparency was preserved just because the output opens.

File size depends on the source image and selected encoding settings. Try a lossy export if quality requirements allow it, then compare the file size and inspect the image. If a particular system requires a specific format or quality, that requirement may outweigh a size reduction.
Which route should you use?
Use Photoshop when it is already part of your editing workflow and you want a familiar export dialog. Use GIMP when you want a GUI with lossless, quality, alpha and metadata choices. Use cwebp for a direct conversion that is easy to repeat in scripts. Use ImageMagick when WebP conversion belongs inside a larger image-processing pipeline and its encoder options are useful to that pipeline. In every case, preserve the original and validate the exported file in the context where it will be used.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert a WebP image back to PNG?
Yes. Google’s dwebp utility decodes WebP to PNG. If the WebP was encoded lossily, decoding it does not recover details discarded during encoding.
Does saving as WebP always make an image smaller?
No. The result varies with the image and encoding settings; compare the output file size rather than assuming conversion will reduce it.
