For standard videos, YouTube’s current guidance recommends 3840×2160 pixels (16:9), with a minimum width of 640 pixels. Video thumbnails may be up to 2 MB when uploaded from mobile and 50 MB on desktop.
Choose and prepare the source image
Start with the sharpest original image you have. A single, obvious subject—such as a person, product or location—usually survives thumbnail-size viewing better than a busy group scene. Keep the important subject away from the outer edges. You will need room to crop the photo into 16:9, and edge details are the first things to disappear on phones, search results and recommended-video shelves.
Check the image before editing
- Use the highest-resolution original available; avoid a screenshot of a compressed social-media preview.
- Look for a clear focal point and recognizable face, product or action.
- Leave empty space on one side if you expect to add a short title or label.
- Remove private, misleading or policy-sensitive content before export. YouTube says inappropriate thumbnails can be rejected and may lead to strikes.
Set the correct thumbnail canvas
Standard videos use a 16:9 canvas. YouTube’s current Help guidance recommends 3840×2160 pixels for video thumbnails and a minimum width of 640 pixels. A 1280×720 canvas is also a practical working size: Adobe Express opens a YouTube design at that size, while Canva’s YouTube-thumbnail templates use the same 16:9 ratio.

Do not stretch a portrait or square photo to fill the canvas. Stretching distorts faces and products. Instead, crop, reposition, or use a background treatment that keeps the original proportions.

Make the thumbnail in Canva
- Open Canva and choose a YouTube-thumbnail template, or create a custom design with a 16:9 canvas.
- Upload the image and drag it onto the canvas.
- Double-click the image to crop. Move the photo until the subject is recognizable and not cut by the frame.
- Add only the text or graphics that communicate information the image cannot. Keep lettering large, high-contrast and separated from the focal subject.
- Download as JPEG when a smaller file is useful, or PNG when you want lossless detail.
Canva provides templates, image upload and 16:9 thumbnail dimensions. Its current pricing and any device-specific limits are not established here, so check the plan shown in your Canva account before relying on a paid feature.
Make the thumbnail in Adobe Express
- Start a YouTube thumbnail design; Adobe Express opens a 1280×720 canvas.
- Upload your photo and place it as the background or as a separate image layer.
- Reposition and crop the image so the subject remains clear at a small display size.
- Add a brief text hook, logo or shape only where it improves identification.
- Export a JPG or PNG, then check the file size before uploading.
Adobe Express can save a design as a reusable template, which is useful when several videos need the same brand treatment. The cited product information establishes the canvas and editing flow; current pricing should be verified in the product before purchase.
Crop and design for small screens
Keep the focal point readable
Preview the design at a small size before exporting. If the face, product or key detail becomes ambiguous, enlarge it, simplify the background or remove decorative elements. A thumbnail is a navigation image, not a full poster.
Use text only when it adds information
A short phrase can clarify the promise of the video, distinguish versions or identify a result. Avoid repeating a title that is already obvious. Use a large, high-contrast treatment and leave breathing room around the subject. These are design practices, not a guarantee of higher click-through rates; no authoritative measurement establishes that a particular color, font or saturation level reliably increases clicks.

Leave safe space
Keep faces, logos and important objects away from every edge. YouTube may display the same image in different crops and sizes, and interface labels can cover small areas in some contexts.
Export the finished image
YouTube accepts JPG and PNG video thumbnails. Export at the canvas dimensions you selected, then inspect the result at 100% zoom and as a small preview.
- Choose JPG for photographic images when you need a smaller file.
- Choose PNG when sharp text, flat graphics or lossless detail matters.
- Check limits: YouTube currently states 2 MB for mobile uploads and 50 MB for desktop video-thumbnail uploads.
- Verify the ratio: standard videos should remain 16:9; do not add unintentional white or black bars.
Upload a custom thumbnail in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content and select the video.
- In the video details, find Thumbnail.
- Choose Upload file, select the JPG or PNG on your device, and wait for the preview.
- Save the video details.
YouTube requires account verification before you can use custom video thumbnails. If the upload control is missing, complete verification and reload Studio. YouTube also notes that changes can take time to appear, so check the public watch page after saving rather than assuming a delayed preview means the file failed.
Thumbnails for YouTube Shorts
Shorts use a vertical 9:16 design. YouTube’s current Help guidance recommends 2160×3840 pixels, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. Uploaded custom Shorts thumbnails are currently added in YouTube Studio on a computer and require verification. YouTube’s July 24, 2026 blog says Partner Program creators began receiving fully custom Shorts-thumbnail uploads, with expansion planned over time; availability can therefore depend on the account and rollout state.

For a Shorts image, place the subject near the vertical center and keep important text away from the top and bottom interface areas. Do not reuse a 16:9 composition without rebuilding it for the tall frame.

Troubleshooting
The image looks stretched
Undo the resize and use a crop or proportional fit. Confirm that the canvas is 16:9 for a standard video or 9:16 for a Short.

The upload button is unavailable
Verify the YouTube account, then reopen Studio. Custom thumbnails require account verification.
YouTube rejects the file as too large
Export a JPEG at the same dimensions, reduce quality slightly, or upload from desktop if the mobile 2 MB limit is the constraint. Desktop video-thumbnail uploads are currently limited to 50 MB.
The subject is cut off
Return to the crop step, move the image inside the frame and keep the subject away from the edges. Check the design at a small preview size before exporting again.

Save the video, wait for YouTube’s processing and refresh the watch page. YouTube warns that changes may take time to appear.

A Short shows a frame instead of my custom image
Custom Shorts-thumbnail uploads are currently handled in YouTube Studio on a computer, require verification and are being expanded over time. The available controls can vary by account and rollout.
Practical pre-upload checklist
- Correct canvas: 3840×2160 or another 16:9 size for a standard video; 2160×3840 for a Short.
- Subject is sharp, recognizable and not touching an edge.
- Text is brief, readable and adds information.
- File is JPG or PNG and within the applicable size limit.
- Image follows YouTube Community Guidelines.
- Account verification is complete.
- Final image has been checked both full-size and as a small preview.

Can I use a phone photo as a YouTube thumbnail?
Yes. Edit the photo in a mobile design app or YouTube-compatible editor, crop it to 16:9 for a standard video, export JPG or PNG within the mobile limit, and upload it through the YouTube Studio flow available on your device.
Is 1280×720 good enough for a thumbnail?
It matches the 16:9 ratio and is the default Adobe Express canvas, but YouTube’s current recommendation for standard videos is 3840×2160. Use the largest practical canvas your source image supports without inventing detail through upscaling.
